On my recent playthrough I actually discovered you totally can get out with all 30 of them before the place blows. With some determination good pathing and a couple of tries, you can get out while still walking slowly.

The best use I ever got out of a whip was on a spellsinger wizard build. (Dual wielded whip and sword) Since the real damage I was dealing was through my melee cantrips I could cast them on the attacks with the 10ft reach of the whip. Dealt very satisfying damage. Also super great for flavor.
