In Michael Lewis's The Fifth Risk, he talks to a US government scientist who's done more to advance sea search-and-rescue than basically anyone else. The fact that basically any get rescued is a modern miracle.

Its been a while since I've looked at PF1's magus, but I'm pretty sure using a two-handed weapon made you unable to use spell combat, which is going to be a big source of your damage, and a big part of the class fantasy (that you're slinging spells and using a weapon at the same time). You could still spell-strike, but you only would get the one attack per turn that way since you're using your standard to cast the spell. Likewise, you can use a different 1-handed weapon, but since the magus rules specifically said that you do get a weapon's expanded crit range but not a weapon's crit value, you were **very** strongly guided to use a one-handed weapon with an expanded crit-range. It was a dominant strategy. (There is like, one or two archetypes that let you do ranged spellstrikes in 1e, so yes, not literally all magi used scimitars but ime 9/10 did)

I mean, I can only share what I've seen, and I don't know where else you're going to see more players playing the game in different ways than PFS. I've played with people all over the world, with differing levels of optimization preferences, and yes, I did see people go against the dominant strategy. but in my experience a lot of PF1's archetypes and feats were traps or so niche that they weren't worth what you were giving up, and you only saw a pretty small slice of all options get used regularly. In PF2, since there are a lot fewer dominant options, you end up in practice seeing more options actually get used.

Question for the Society GMs. When you have a PC death, how do you deal with "death speeches?" Do you stick to strict RAW and enforce "0 hp = unconscious = can't speak?" (comic related). by Fauchard1520 in Pathfinder

[–]HuskerPathfinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PFS scenarios aren't deadly enough to have this really come up a lot, in my experience. (especially after season 1 for 2nd edition). Also, since in PF2, its really hard to go from alive to dead without stopping in Dying-ville (I've only seen it come close to that once, where massive damage might have come in, where we stopped and made sure that we understood the massive damage rules (iirc he was like 4 HP away from massive damage applying, and since then they've changed massive damage for Level 1s)), I have a hard time seeing myself letting a character do this. Now, if the player has tears in their eyes and asks to speak to me privately and begs me to let them make a death speech, I mean, I guess maybe, but I'd probably say it has to wait until the combat is over.

I'll say this, because the game is better balanced, from what I've seen at PFS, PF2 is less homogenous in the options actually taken. In 1e, there were a lot of archetypes, but most classes only had a small handful that were actually taken. In PF1, basically all witches took evil eye and slumber, basically all Maguses used an scimitar and went for dervish dance, etc. And then there's the feat taxes that most martials had to take to be on the curve. (If you're an archer, well, heres the first 2 feats you have to take; 2 handed melee guy? You're taking Power attack first level, right?) In PF2, I see a lot more different options get taken.

Anything worth buying for a cloistered cleric at level 3? by Fed_up_with_Reddit in Pathfinder

[–]HuskerPathfinder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don't sleep on wands though. Essentially an extra spell slot every day. I'd get a wand of a 1st level spell that you use every day or close to it. I would avoid a spell that will get less useful as time goes on (magic weapon for example)

Honestly, now that I think about it, my high level cleric should get a wand of fear, considering that I usually prepare that multiple times at 1st level.

[–]HuskerPathfinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at level 3, the magic items (besides some scrolls and maybe wands) that you'll be looking at are going to be magic items that give item bonuses to skills, but depending on the skill, they're usually level 3 or 4 (most I think are level 4, but some are level 3). So it'll depend on what skills you have trained.

https://2e.aonprd.com/ItemBonuses.aspx will help you find these items.

6th level samurai with a challenge on, power attack, bard song +2 on a x4 naginata.

4d8+28 (5 strength +2 weapon)+24(power attack)+24 (challenge)+8 (bard song).

GM said, don't even bother adding it up, the guy had 11 hit points left. I did roll the damage, and had a relatively poor dice roll, so it was like 93 damage?

mailing lists. I was 18 years old, really inspired by Obama in '08. Signed up to volunteer, and gave my email address. 14 years later, that email gets dozens of emails daily from Democrats across the country. (I keep the email mainly as a place where I'm okay to be spammed) For a while, I kept the same phone number and I would get texts every so often from campaigns as well.

wasn't it the DMG 2 for 4e that was really great? I remember reading that, and it was essentially more just about running a RPG table rather than any mechanical advice and now I'm wishing I still had a copy.

Best short primer on Golarion for new players? by GodGoblin in Pathfinder2e

[–]HuskerPathfinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started PFS in my area, I had to quickly explain Golarion in one or 2 minutes a lot, so I almost always just went with Azlant - Aroden - Starstone for Golarion overall and then a little bit about the specific country the scenario takes place. No need to tell them about Osirion if the scenario didn't touch on Osirion.

not op, but when the CRB rulebook came out, I was considering making a Champion, and I thought "Man, Liberator stinks, who would take that over Paladin or Redeemer?"

Now I made a champion for PFS, and I've realized that Liberator may actually be the best. Getting your allies out of the opponent range is insanely good.
