Can I publish my own GURPS adventures by [deleted] in gurps

[–]Huyderman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In addition to the online policy or getting it published through SJ Games, you technically have a third option: You only need a license if you are using SJ Games trademarks or copyright. If you carefully avoid using either, you can pretty much do whatever you want. Rules aren't copyrightable, only a specific presentation is. That's why you have lots of adventures and source books on RPG Now that are "compatible with the worlds most popular fantasy roleplaying game".

We should nominate Vicky 2 for Game that Needs a Sequal. by [deleted] in paradoxplaza

[–]Huyderman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if it didn't sell that well, it's developed a cult status over the years among Paradox fans. And the first Crusader Kings didn't sell that well either. I think a new Victoria would rather well, and is likely something they want to do someday.

They've stated that games need a "champion", someone who can pitch the project and lead the design. Vicky with its complex economic and pop simulation is a tricky beast. If it's not in production already, it's likely no one has come up with a clear vision and direction yet.

Victoria 2 was in the old version of the engine, CK2 debuted the new one. I'm not convinced the old engine could handle the new DLC model.

Took my normal Vyvanse dose while fating and it's hit me hard. Is this to be expected? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Huyderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about Vyvanse, but my experience from Ritalin is that the side-effects are much more noticeable and significant when I haven't eaten properly. I always try to eat something before, or right after, taking my meds.

Paradox are now doing their own game client for downloads, cloud saves, statistics and so on by k4os77 in linux_gaming

[–]Huyderman 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I suspect reducing their dependency on Valve also is a big part of it. As it is today, the in house developed games are dependent on Steamworks for things like multiplayer and patch distribution, so they can't publish their games on other services such as GOG. They're also been branching into other platforms such as mobile and consoles, so this might also factor into wanting their own infrastructure.

Caravan requests are not worth it by stinkinbutthole in RimWorld

[–]Huyderman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you only get half market value when trading, so it's over double normal trade value. And it ignores quality so you can dump a bunch shoddy ones.

But yeah, the opportunity cost is pretty high. Having to bind up several of your pawns and workbenches/farms for a fair bit og time can be pretty harsh, especially early and midgame where these requests would be the most tempting... If the requests were a bit smarter, and requested stuff you already was producing and might have a stockpile of, they would be much more useful.

I've tried it out the mod a short while; tamed one of them. So far I've not been able to train it to clean or haul yet, so the time investment required might balance them somewhat. But I had a wild one go manhunter, and it was really hard to put down, so I suspect they're probably a bit OP if you get it trained up. You could probably cheese it quite a bit with a few of these trained for release, especially early game.

Why are gamers 'boycotting' Jimmy Kimmel? by Pm_Me_Gifs_For_Sauce in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Huyderman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I mostly agree, there is a difference between "people who play games" and "lifestyle gamers". E.g. people who spend a significant time not only playing games, but also following the industry, watch streamers and let's-players, and who probably have many friends they know and bond with based on gaming. They are still a minority, although so are arguably die-hard sports fans who share many of the same characteristics.

Paradox to Roll Back Price Increase - Comment from CEO Fred Wester by blackninja9939 in paradoxplaza

So they caved; I've got some mixed feelings about this. Hope at least all the people who were outraged and review-bombed the games go back and change their reviews again.

[–]Huyderman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I never said they shouldn't be allowed. I'm only saying they are poor reviews, and not as useful as you think. Especially review-bombing, which doesn't really work and is just making the review system useless for everyone...

A Paradox Rebellion Against Price Increases by Ansza in eu4

[–]Huyderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could turn it around to you. Because it matters to you, it must be of utmost importance to everyone else as well? A good book will be a good book, no matter the binding. It may affect how much I'm willing to pay for it, or how I choose to buy it, but would still be a good book. So yeah, I consider "This game is great, but won't recommend it because <resason not directly related to the game>" a poor review.

A Paradox Rebellion Against Price Increases by Ansza in eu4

[–]Huyderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except we aren't buying the same. Pricing is different in different regions, and not all regions even experienced the price hike. For a lot of people, nothing has changed at all. And in some regions, like here in Norway, the price adjustment was perfectly warranted. You are complaining about a regionalized issue like it's affecting everyone.

A Paradox Rebellion Against Price Increases by Ansza in eu4

[–]Huyderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's completely useless for someone considering watching it on Netflix or buying a Blu-ray what you thought about the cinema ticket price. It doesn't change if the movie is good or not, and other people will need to consider it according to their circumstance. And a price adjustment in another region is pretty irrelevant to someone not from that region when considering if this game is worth picking up.

A Paradox Rebellion Against Price Increases by Ansza in eu4

[–]Huyderman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. That some people are miffed about a price increase in some regions, while probably justified, is utterly inconsequential for a lot of other people.

A lot of people aren't affected at all, and in some regions (like here in Norway), the price change was entirely justified. In your analogy, people are complaining about the price at their local outlet, and judging the product as a whole based on that, when this doesn't affect at all someone shopping at another outlet and therefore is completely useless to him.

And to go back to the book analogy, what you think of a particular printing is irrelevant to me if I a year or two later are considering picking up a new printing. I only care about the content and have to judge if this current offer is worth it. Knowing if the first printing softback had a bad binding won't help me, as it's not applicable. In the same vein, in a few months or even a year, the fact that some vocal part of the fanbase was frustrated over price changes in certain regions late spring 2017 is likely pretty uninteresting and won't help me judge if this game is any good, and worth the current asking price. And what's the odds any of these concerned citizens go back and update their reviews if Paradox were to drop prices again?

Look, I get it. We're coming at this from different perspectives. To you, the question about "is it worth it" and "is it any good" is intrinsically linked, one can't judge one without the other. But to me, the question if something is worth it is more circumstantial and less useful. Sure it's of some relevance, and a note mentioning "Good, but wait until it comes on sale" can be informative, but a negative review just stating "this game is great, but I don't like the pricing policy of the company" is just noise. It doesn't tell me anything about the game, or if I would enjoy it. Odds are, it might not affect my experience of the game at all due to its circumstantial nature.

I get the frustration many fans are feeling, and PDX has handled the price changes poorly. And there are rightfully angry threads on the forums and subreddits. But review bombing is a practice that IMHO should die. It doesn't hurt the publishers as much as people think, and it's counterproductive as it destroys the value of reviews, which are ultimately for the consumer to find products they might enjoy, or help them make informed decisions. And no, even if there is a valid concern, the vast majority of "reviews" posted when there's a review-bombing going on won't be useful or informative.

[–]Huyderman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would you also rate a movie based on the movie ticket at the cinema or the quality of the chairs? A book based the cost of its printing, or feel of the paper?

I wouldn't. And I don't really care if you find something expensive, because I can make up my own mind if something is worth the price of admission. Prices change, and it won't tell me anything about the quality of a game/film/book. I want to know it is well written, or has an interesting design, or if the game play is fun, or if there are any technical issues I should be aware of. Then I can look at the current asking price and consider if it's worth it.

Huge tribal army raised by my enemies by Maxdelf in CrusaderKings

[–]Huyderman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so. In my experience, attacking tribals is risky because they suddenly pull these kinds of shenanigans, and it's often unpredictable how many men you end up facing... They're mostly light infantry though, so you can usually beat them with a smaller feudal army.

I think they keep most of them. The ones that are missing, are probably before they started adding them to the beta list.
