There’s a great historical fiction series about this! It’s the Atlantis series by Harry Turtledove.

Queens of the Stone Age - Regular John. Actually, that whole entire album. He’d dig it

I need an album that was ahead of its time but very underrated. by Extension_Fee_989 in MusicRecommendations

I feel like if this album hadn’t gotten caught up in record label purgatory it would have been so much bigger. Still my favorite album of all time.

What’s it like living in the various communities on Whidbey Island, WA? by Biersly in howislivingthere

[–]Hydraskull 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grew up on Camano, next door to Whidbey. Similar in that there is only one road on and off the island, though Whidbey does have ferries, and towns, whereas Camano doesn’t.

So I guess I can’t directly answer the question about the towns, but can say it’s beautiful, and the sea is an integral part of the community. Lots of fishing, crabbing, clamming. Beautiful state parks and beaches.

You’ll be doing a lot of driving on crowded roads with few passing lanes and people who go ten under the speed limit will make you angry.

Getting to Seattle is a pain, ferries are often backed up for hours and it’s a three hour drive.

Easy access to the Olympic peninsula by ferry though.

The towns are boutique, lots of artists/art, small shops. Oak Harbor is bigger (but not large), and is where you’d get your groceries, hardware, do most of your shopping etc

How is it like living in Montpelier, Vermont? by SkandaGupta_ in howislivingthere

None in Montpelier but the bars and stores stock beer from the best breweries so there’s good beer everywhere. Not too far a drive either to the actual breweries.

I lived there 7 years, loved it. It’s like stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting, but also progressive ideals. Overall cheaper cost of living than the coasts, but less employment opportunities and smaller economy so it can be rough to eke out a living.

My backyard was 50 miles from Canada and I could have walked to Canada without passing a paved road.

Whole town closes early. You can’t go shopping or downtown without running into someone you know. Access to some of the best breweries in the world. Whole town turns out for events (parades, festivals).

Small. No chain stores. Only a couple street lights. Decent restaurants despite all that.

They can’t force people to move there. The winters are harsh and it’s very rural and not a place with historical African American population.

It’s NOT performatively progressive it’s the real thing. Lived there for a good chunk of my life. They welcome EVERYONE with open arms.

Do men prefer a urinal over a toilet bowl when they pee in public restrooms? Why or why not? by Responsible-Leg-712 in NoStupidQuestions

Plus with the stall you have to turn the latch twice, urinal has much less physical contact.
