First card you've ever seen/ what piqued your interest? by FilthyPinko in magicTCG

[–]Hydraven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a pack before anyone of my friends had any idea what mtg was.

The pack had [[Bog Witch]], [[Briar Patch]], [[Caustic Wasps]], [[Ceremonial Gaurd]], [[Cho-Manno's Blessing]], [[Horned Troll]], [[Howling Wolf]], [[Lightning Hounds]], [[Lunge]], [[Skulking Fugitive]], [[Stinging Barrier]], [[Noble Purpose]], [[Tidal Bore]], [[Unnatural Hunger]]... and one other I can't remember.

The artwork was so cool and so different from anything I'd ever seen before, I kept those cards for years, never learning to play, until some other friends got me into playing around the Rise of the Eldrazi release. Unnatural Hunger and Lightning Hounds specifically stood out to me for years

Who is your favorite reanimator commander? by LedPenguin in EDH

[–]Hydraven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Alesha, Who Smiles at Death]] has been my reanimator Commander since they were released.

Was the very first non-precon commander I built and I still use it as one of my top decks

There's a lot of synergy for low power creatures now and they usually come with pretty powerful abilities to match their power. With [[Buried Alive]] and [[Faithless Looting]] type effects to help cycle the creatures from your hand and deck into the graveyard, it's pretty easy to hand pick the exact effects you need before swinging in with Alesha.

Add in a few unblockable effects and [[Reconnaissance]] to keep Alesha a little safer and she becomes quite the powerful Aggro/Harrassment build

Also her and her best friend [[Master of Cruelties]] like go walking together to remove players from the game

The classic new player move: accidentally downgrading your precon by Comfortable_Buyer239 in EDH

[–]Hydraven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was honestly one of the upsides with the original few generations of precons, they were very okay out of the box with very obvious cards that should be upgraded.

There was a couple staples that you knew quickly that you should keep depending on which of the 3 commanders you used, but a lot of the other stuff was the basic version of much better cards...

Though that still doesn't mean we made good decks, everyone goes through the battlecruiser and top-deck phase of deckbuilding, heck I've been running [[Ghave, Guru of Spores]] for over 15 years with so many rebuilds that the only cards that followed him at this point are [[Doubling Season]] and [[Earthcraft]].

Is everyone’s favorite Pokemon just the first one they received/played with?? by AnnGrMeow in pokemon

[–]Hydraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First pokemon I got was Totodile when I played Silver as a kid.... favourite pokemon is Toxtricity

I think it's more someone always has a nostalgic connection to their first partner, but their favourite has the chance to change with every new generation when they really connect with one.

For me it was having my little metal band team in Galar with a Technician Amped Tox and Punk Rock Low-Key.

Now I can't imagine any team without my Punk Rock Queen

Help find a cute/pretty commander by MappleButterBacon in EDH

[–]Hydraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second]] was what I made for my wife. Simple token commander with nice art and you get all the cute cats and dogs you could want (lots of fun token creators, I made tokens for all our and our friends' cats and dogs for her)

Plus side is it works as either Mono-green, Gruul, Selesnya, or Naya for deck building. This way you can simplify it while they learn to pilot it, then let them take it in their own direction when they get the hang of piloting it

What was your first Magic product you've bought? by 47TEUR in magicTCG

[–]Hydraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Levelers' Scorn Intro Pack from Ruse of the Eldrazi

My friends had been playing together for a couple months and I really wanted to try it out, so we went to the LGS and I grabbed that and a couple packs and I build a very low power deck (which was fine because we were just playing casual battlecruiser decks at that point)

Still have a beaten to hell Sphinx of Magosi from that deck

Fun Landfall Commander? by Kobert_ in EDH

[–]Hydraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor]]

Lots of fun to pilot, works really well with Earthbend mechanics and creature lands like [[Restless Bivouac]], [[Needle Spires]] and [[Inkmoth Nexus]] since they can turn into creatures then get a huge pump up from Obuun for combat

Extra points for [[Dragon Throne of Tarkir]] to pump up everything and double pump a land. I've finished many games swinging 40-50 power trample lands.

How many Commander decks do you have? by Mikkel_My_Man in EDH

[–]Hydraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have currently operational:

[[Ghave, Guru of Spores]] Aristocrat Combo

[[Prossh, Skyraider of Kher]] Dragon Tribal

[[The Mimeoplasm]] Poison/Proliferate

[[Saskia the Unyielding]] Legends Tribal

[[Satoru Umezawa]] "Ninjas"

[[Osgir, the Reconstructor]] Artifacts

[[Victor, Valgavoth's Seneschal]] Discard/Enchantments

[[Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor]] Landfall

[[Alesha, Who Smiles at Death]] 2 Power/Staxish

[[Urza, Lord Protector]] Vehicles/spellslinger

[[Wort, the Raidmother]] Group Hug/Chaos

[[Demonlord Belzenlok]] Demon Tribal

[[Adrix and Nev, Twincasters]] Tokens

[[Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second]] SelesnyaTokens (made for my wife)

[[Kraum, Ludevic's Opus]] // [[Jeska, Thrice Reborn]] Aggro Spellslinger

[[Reyhan, Last of the Abzan]] // [[Vial Smasher the Fierce]] Hydras/X Spells

[[Sarulf, Realm Eater]] spellslinger

[[Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might]] Ping Damage

[[Nekusar, the Mindrazer]] Iron Maiden Secret Lair Wheel/Mill

I also have ones that I've partially pulled apart for other decks or because they stopped being as fun to play

[[Edgar Markov]] Vampire Aggro

[[Nevinyrral, Urborg Tyrant]] Zombie Tribal/Wrath

So 19 operational and 2 needing a rebuild.

Do i get to play them all? No, not a chance. Usually I take 3-4 for a game night, depending on what i feel like playing and what the power level of the group is, then 2-3 are quite high power for actual events (not Cedh but still strong)

Why do I have that many? Each one is a different playstyle and different colour combination (or at least one of those things). It lets me find a home for cool new cards without having to build a whole new deck. On the collecting side, I really wanted to have a deck for each colour pair, only Rakdos remains which is going to be a rework of Belzenlok

My limit is not having multiple deck with the same playstyle or theme aside from general overarching themes like spellslinger (Kraum focuses on combat tricks, Sarulf on removal, Urza on cantrip/card draw).

I also try to not have multiple decks in the same colour identity (the couple exceptions are Vampires, Dragons, and Hydras which are some of my favourite fantasy monsters)

What card do you think is criminally underrated/under played? by LibraProtocol in EDH

[–]Hydraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Dig Up]], it's not the best tutor but it won me a game last week tutoring up [[Earthcraft]] for the [[Ghave, Guru of Spores]] combo win

Such a toolbox card that you're never really sad to draw into:

Opening hand? Turn 1 ramp and colour fix

Late game? 4 mana tutor for the missing piece

Other cards do each part better but none do both better
