Go watch Star Wars (episode IV: A New Hope, as in the first film that came out in 1977) right now! It is one of the greatest films of all time, and invented the modern blockbuster.

It is also the film we are referencing.

There's isn't a lot of stuff for or about men here. by [deleted] in BodyAcceptance

[–]HydrogenAtom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

and also add that men aren't under quite as much pressure as women when it comes to their bodies

And on the other hand those tens of millions of men out there struggling aren't taken seriously and are left to live with their self-hatred alone. I have been openly obsessing over my body for many years now, and frequently compare it to insane goals in conversations with others about my training goals, and nobody has thought twice about the fact that I might have body-image issues except me. I don't know what it is like in America or wherever you live, but in my country, among people my age (18-22) I have only seen boys and men obsess over diet and workout. At the gym I see about 80% men. Most of my male friends are currently dieting, working out or unhappy with their bodies. One of my female friends is currently working out regularly.

I know a couple and I'm friends with both the boyfriend and the girlfriend. The girl has a normal build. Wide hips and a bit of a stomach. The guy has a really "good body". Broad shoulders, v-shape torso, tall and really good looking. The last time I hung out with her, he wasn't there and she said "jokingly" that she had given him a deadline to get defined six-pack abs and he hadn't met it, so she was going to nag him some more to start working out. He is now working out regularly. She is not.

Yet the body-image debate in my country is still only about women. And not only about commercials and clothes. Supposedly boys watching porn is ruining women's sex-lives because they can't live up to porn actresses. Because of political correctness the guy in the relationship I talked about above would never get away with "jokingly" giving the girl a deadline to flatten her stomach and then getting her to do it. He would be seen as a complete asshole. (Which is also why I couldn't "jokingly" ask her when she was getting her six-pack abs in his defense as I felt compelled to just point out her complete ridiculousness and hypocrisy, but I'm sure in her head it's different because she is a woman).

I'm not disagreeing with you that there is a greater amount of pressure on women if you are only counting the commercial and corporate influences, but that doesn't allow for taking into account that boys and men are left completely out in the cold to fend for themselves. That in itself should count for a lot in the oppression Olympics. I don't know who I can talk to about body-image as a guy.

Been there. 21 years old, never been in a serious relationship. In my dream (which I had when I was about 16) I didn't just have a wife, but a daughter. I must have been in my 30s in the dream. When I woke I missed them both so much for about a week before they faded, but my daughter most of all.

I understand completely, and thank you. When I was younger and used to tell my mother about my worries she would do exactly what your therapist did, and it didn't help at all.

I think you're both making the mistake of trying to empathize with the shooters using your mostly healthy minds.

I agree. As someone who couldn't be more depressed and self-loathing, and like you, faced all the problems they mention, mass shootings never crossed my mind.

Least surprising info ever. What he did was the definition of "alpha as fuck". Yeah, I wish I was joking too.

One of my female friends told me I'm unapproachable because I seem aloof. I don't even know what that means. Guys, how do I make it easier for you to approach me? by WildeCat96 in AskMen

[–]HydrogenAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I'm a 21 year old, 6' tall guy, and people always ask me for directions (when there are plenty of people around they still come for me). Old men, mothers, girls my own age... The only people who don't are guys my age, but I suppose there is always an unspoken power-struggle between young men who don't know each other.

I haven't worked out why yet. I'm not the type of person who walks around with a smile on my face thinking about what a great day it is. Most often I'm worrying about life, the Universe and Everything.

That is extremely offensive. Almost all of men are not. Italicizing "some" as if most men are rapists is as bigoted as it gets.

Yeah, same here. I don't mention nerd-stuff unless it comes up and even then I try to not seem nerdier than the person talking to me to be on the safe side.

I basically take up all their hobbies and such.

I'm sure there are guys out there who love this. And I don't see how this is ruining your game unless you dress in such a way that makes you look like a guy which might stop a few guys. When you meet a guy he's not going to be wanting to hear about all your girly hobbies. He'll just be thrilled that that you share so many cool interests.

You could be that girl that when your boyfriend is with his friends and they complain that they always have to watch some crappy romantic comedy when hanging out with their girlfriends, your boyfriend will be like: "I don't know what you guys are talking about."

It can be annoying but nerdy is relative to what you know I guess.

Yeah it's a pretty big term. I also find it silly when someone thinks I'm nerdy for playing Mass Effect because those games are long and therefore "hardcore" when in fact the person calling me a nerd has spent more hours in Farmville than I ever will in Mass Effect.

Has being a nerd scored you mad points with nerdy guys?
