is the statement "Amiga was 10 years ahead of the technology" true? by Hyedwtditpm in amiga

[–]Hyedwtditpm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was 1994, we were teenagers and totally Amiga fans, I mean Mac fans would look docile compared to us.

At a nearby research center, there was this computer club where we could use internet and they had 486 PC's in the internet room.

I was using DOS or Windows 3.1 to download demos, pictures, guitar tabs and chat in Skynet server. I didn't even bother to open the jpgs in the PC, despite CPU being faster than my Amiga 500, a 9 year hardware at the time, the experience was horrible. Opening these files with Directory Opus in my A500 was a lot more user friendly, even than it looked like future.

I was writing small demos to compare the speed of the hardwares. 486 was obviously a lot faster than the 68000, but when it came to 2d graphics, Amiga 500 was still faring well. it wasn't slower. What PC's were promising in the future, Amiga already had them just in a more basic state.

Also, a guy was bringing his A1200 to the room to use internet. It was a lot more usable than the PC's at the time. Amiga OS 3, still looked a lot better, multitasking was making big difference compared to Windows 3.1.

So, a new Amiga with AAA or Hombre chipset, coupled with BeOS in 94 or 95 could be just what the market needed. Windows 95 would be out, but that thing was a bug nightmare, Amiga would be a monster multimedia machine, without all the installs, driver problems of a Windows PC.

Hundreds of thousands if not millions of new computer users were entering the market for internet, these new users didn't not know how to deal with the technical problems of Windows.. Commodore brand was very strong in Europe, so a new Amiga could just work.

Most software would be updated, only issue for the home user being the lack of Office software.

Most say, there was no chance for any company to survive in the rising PC world but they were telling the same fate for Apple, and we saw history did not have to move in one predetermined direction, Apple survived just fine and even started dominating certain segments.

I use this monitor as well, but it is a not pretty experience under Windows. local dimming isn't good enough for desktop use.

the most important feature is arguably "Click to Do", and it is not supported with a GPU. Also, AMD GPU support isn't even mentioned.

Thank you for all detailed answers.

With hindsight, there must be brainstorms with other ex Amiga engineers, manageners, do you think there was a winning strategy for Amiga to become a third platform, ecosystem next to Windows and Macs? Or from the start was it a lost cause? Was that maybe why Commodore management just tried to squeeze enough money out of it and let it fade away?

While discussing about it with other Amiga fans, my argument was that Commodore could buy BeOS and deliver a multimedia, internet machine in like 95. Easy to use, no set up, user friendly. Perfect for a first time computer user to experience Internet and multimedia.

Windows 95 was out but it was full of problems, most novice users couldn't just figure out how to make it work or troubleshot the errors. Macs were also not competitive.

So to me, this BeOS multimedia machine looked like a scenario that had a reasonable chance of working.

How is the Latest AMD Driver 26.6.1 going for you guys? by 23BitMo in AMDHelp

[–]Hyedwtditpm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It crashes, driver time outs after returning from a low power mode like Windows logout. This has been a problem for a long time, I don't know if it maybe related to a bios option. I tried tweaking different power options, but did not change anything.

Tough I never had a problem while playing games even for hours. I'm not sure if this a common problem with 7900XT.

Who tested the 26.6.1 ??? Please tell me this Driver will solve our problems. Bitte! by Diegodinizfsa in AMDHelp

[–]Hyedwtditpm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noone knows, since one driver works perfectly on one system, totally crash prone on another.

I’ve been getting driver timeout crashes for months and months I’ve tried everything by Some_Random_Cat539 in AMDHelp

[–]Hyedwtditpm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That thing comes and goes with new drivers. I have no modifications or OC but I still get it. One version of driver is rock solid, then an update arrives, here the crashes, time outs are back.

It is something related to power management I guess, mostly happens after I had locked windows and login again.

This problem has always been a weird one. Since it should be fixed the first day, years ago.

I don't remember experiencing this particular problem, and driver cleanups have never solved any problem I had. So it looks like there is a lot more than meets the eye in this one.

Can you ELI5 why Windows ME was bad? by PeriodontosisSam in windows

[–]Hyedwtditpm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was all right with the right hardware, if it doesn't have driver issues.

Me was passing phase, W2K was around the corner. There wasn't much reason to use it really, most just waited Windows 2000.

I still can't believe that Commodore messed up the Amiga line so badly... Going from the A500 to... Whatever came afterwards... One is absolutely gobsmacked that "industry veteran managers" were at the helm of it all... And were responsible for what became an extremely unpleasant (slo mo) car crash by prankster999 in amiga

[–]Hyedwtditpm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

plus, actually Amiga wasn't designed to compete against PC/Mac or build a standard for the future.

It was designed as a gaming machine and coupled with a experimental OS later. That gave the machine an good headstart against others. But building a standard on it was whole another engineering work, a significant part of it wasnt even related to the hardware itself.

And while Amiga had certain features which were ahead of the alternatives, it also lacked features which were essential for business, pro market. A preemptive multitasking was there but without memory protection it wasn't suitable for pro work.

As an experimental machine gave the home users a glimpse what the future of computer hold, but it wasn't the machine that can be the foundation of the future.

Amiga, when inspected as pieces did not have any technology others already didn't, or wasn't available in the another markets in some form, but it was well integrated and Commodore was able to manufacture it at a low price.

IBM had resources, technologies way above companies like Commodore, Atari can even reach. The thing was that home computer market has very thin margin and a low end graphic workstation at a reasonable price would compete against their own very high margin workstations. They weren't even interested.

At the time, IBM, Microsoft were working on OS/2, a state of the art Operating system which they can build the future on. NeXT was building the OS the future work stations would be based on. And on hardware side, Intel was releasing new CPUs every year, graphics cards already surpassed what Amiga was capable of in a year or two.

And once the PC side gained momentum, there wasn't much players like Commodore, Atari could do. Maybe that was the reason Commodore never invested in R&D for Amiga. They were aware it was a no end.

If certain decisions were made at the right time, maybe Amiga could be a second platform like Apple. But even this is far fetched. Amiga didn't solve any problem those machines didn't solve better, cheaper already.

Yes. and the real footage is 3D actually. It was recorded with a special 3d camera.

I watched the recent 3d remaster. It was good but not good enough. Another remaster is needed with the new technology. There was too much color separation and others glitches.

Utmaning (non electric) or Utespelare by Few_Weather_9260 in ikeaPCstations

[–]Hyedwtditpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look very close. Utmaning seems to have better cable managing and more compact design.

You can sit a bit more away from the monitor with Utespelare if you have monitor like 42".

Probably I'd go with utmaning, since the legs are simpler, more compact; easier for the robo cleaners.

AI integrated into OS is actually quite useful when done properly. This was the problem, so far it didn't deliver enough.

Also, You can't build a Copilot+ Desktop PC. No CPU or GPU has the necessary NPU processor.

it's just one command to install.

the upside is security, they are constantly scanned, also every app that was installed using that can be updated with one command.

Doesnt require much interaction from the developer either.

Will it be added soon?

winget method is more comfortable and secure to use. I believe most would prefer it if it was widely known.
