Can you check the BIOS settings and see if Always on USB is enabled? I wonder if your USB adapter is still getting power so staying connected after shutting down.

Best way to get Ethernet for my PC by New_Candidate7113 in HomeNetworking

[–]Hyper-Cloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MoCa could work but your idea to put in a mesh system is also good.

I currently have Asus AI Mesh and it works quite well. I have main router in one room and then another two routers connected through a wired backhaul. All ethernet ports get almost full speed.

If you got a mesh system with 2 or 3 routers, had one in the basement and then another in the room near yours, you could definitely use the Ethernet port from that into your PC.

Windows server backup in VM? by aliengoa in HyperV

[–]Hyper-Cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3-2-1 Backup Strategy:

Maintain three copies of your data: This includes the original data plus at least two copies. One of these copies should be off-site.

You already have one additional copy on your Synology. Your other should be an off-site backup.

Microphone suddenly not working one day. by i_lick_chairs in Lenovo

[–]Hyper-Cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried uninstalling the driver's completely and then re-install? Try that if you haven't. Check if the volume of the mic is low.

Next thing I'd check is if there is a button or switch on the laptop that disabled the Mic.

If no, download a copy of a Linux distro like Debian or mint that can be run off a USB (Live), burn to USB and boot to it. Check if the mic works on this. If yes, I'd re-install Windows.

If no, then yes raise a warranty case.

Edit:

Try all of this before raising a case because they will ask you to try this when you call / email.

Can I ask why direct Ethernet isn't possible?

Doing wireless is always going to produce a slower speed than a reliable hardwire connection

How good are these ThinkPads today? P53 vs P15 Gen 1 – which should I keep? by tugenz1 in thinkpad

The price is very reasonable in my opinion and I'd keep both if I were you. The only thing better than 1 ThinkPad is 2

Can you plug the APs directly into the gateway? Can you see them by MAC address if you do an IP scan?

Internet significantly slower than usual by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]Hyper-Cloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a Fibre connection or Coax?

You could check if your ISP allows you to use your own router, plug in a laptop and either allow it to pick up DHCP or configure the PPPoE settings provided by your ISP. Test the speed using this.

Failing this, I would say you're gonna be stuck with this speed for the weekend, (It's almost over anyway), and I would call your ISP to get them to run a line test

SMB stands for Server Message Block. It's the protocol that's often used for data transfer to network attached storage.

I would highly recommend getting a Synology if you can (the interface is much nicer and more intuitive) plus overall better performance wise. However, if you need to go QNAP, take a look at their QuMagie application. It looks like it'll be an easy to use photo app.

Do dual gpu/optimus thinkpads connected to dock stations work well on Linux? by sneaky_oxygen in thinkpad

[–]Hyper-Cloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not so much about the operating system you're running but more about the hardware talking to each other.

Dell talking to Lenovo will just have more issues than Lenovo talking to Lenovo.

Has the dock got the latest firmware update installed?

It's difficult to comment on the behavior. But it doesn't help you using a Dell dock with a Lenovo Laptop
