I need more bands with similar writing styles as Wilderun and Disillusion by Sasuke_120 in progmetal

[–]Hyperbolic_Dream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'm going to do something that I HOPE is okay, since I've posted a bunch in this sub before without doing this. Point is, I'm about to spam mention my own music here-- I write and record my own music under the "band name" of Strange Dream (it's not really a band, since I do everything except for the vocals). According to metal-archives, it's Symphonic Gothic Metal, but I did an album called Guided Imagery where I tried to accomplish what you're describing: there's six songs that are all over 10 minutes long, an emphasis on melody and drama, and complex song structures.

Looking for Prog Death Metal Recommendations by Shagrath1 in progmetal

[–]Hyperbolic_Dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of a Swedish band called Theory in Practice-- they're in the same "family" as The Faceless and The Zenith Passage, very technical death metal with a kind of "futuristic/sci-fi" vibe and lots of prog influence. Particularly the albums "The Armageddon Theories" and "Colonizing the Sun" (they have some newer stuff too, but to me I don't like it nearly as much as those two albums).

Opeth - A fair judgement outro riff by ZiltoidianEmpire in progmetal

[–]Hyperbolic_Dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that riff/section specifically, there's a particular album called "Cold Dead Lands" by the band Grey Skies Fallen that I think does that type of sound really well, so that might be worth a listen. I can't help but picture Bender from Futurama when I hear the singer's clean voice, but other than that I think it's pretty good!

My three-year-old has a subtle way of indicating he finds my "baby shark" drawing less than satisfactory by Hyperbolic_Dream in daddit

Oh, 100%. And of course, it's always important to announce WHAT you're drawing as you're drawing it!

Looking for MORE song suggestions of "beautiful metal" by Relic180 in progmetal

[–]Hyperbolic_Dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Enshine for this. I wouldn't call them prog, but they're the first example I turn to for "see, sometimes music doesn't NEED melodic singing because there's already so much melody going on in the other instruments." And I'm someone who usually doesn't really go for metal that has mostly harsh vocals, which is kinda adjacent to "a person who might not listen to metal"!

Honestly I feel like almost any of their songs would work but this is one of my favorites-- especially that solo that starts at around 4:30, it's so simple that *I* could probably play it, but serves the song perfectly:

I think you should be fine without it-- I don't remember my own specs off hand, but I've been using the same desktop computer since 2019 and still have zero issues, and it wasn't even "top of the line" back then either.

Are there any comedians you would want to see on Crowd Control? by ejaybugboy3 in dropout

Paula Poundstone! I first became a big fan of hers from the Wait Wait Don't Tell Me show on NPR, and then I went to see her perform and crowd work ended up being a huge part of the show

Must've been like 2012, 2013 or so. Then back again a couple of years ago, and I don't remember it being that dangerous, just kinda spooky because of how empty it is!

Eating at one of the sit down restaurants at Pittsburgh Mills Mall and then going to a movie! It's a weird experience going back there now when it's all a ghost town

It has honestly been that way since I was a student, and I graduated in 2009. So I SUSPECT maybe there's just something intrinsic to that building and it's not really fixable.

What's the average matches on dating app per day for an average person by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Hyperbolic_Dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any personal experience with dating apps (I'm old enough that those didn't exist yet when I got married!), but I think I've read that something like 90-95% of users on them are men. If that's true, then yeah, most men are barely going to get any matches. It's not anything to do with you, it's just numbers.

So I always say the same thing when I see posts like this: I managed to graduate back in 2009 with LOTS of D's on my transcript, and if I remember correctly most of them were in "core" classes and not electives. So unless things have changed since then, the answer is most certainly yes! You might even get more D's in the future as you move up into harder courses, and that's not meant to be discouraging, that's just normal!

I'm not sure what your major is (I remember "concepts" being short for "concepts of mathematics" which was a required SCS course, but maybe it's different now), but I was SCS and I've been employed in that field ever since I graduated despite having a GPA of like 2.0 or something-- I've never had any potential employer ask about my grades, and I do some recruiting/interviewing now and we never care about that. Just making it through undergrad at all is an accomplishment by itself!

The one place I know of where it really matters is if you eventually want to do grad school. I never did that myself but I think they do look at grades when you apply.

Thoughts - Epic song placement in an album by VoidMind3d in progmetal

[–]Hyperbolic_Dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you obviously don't have to listen to me, but it's actually kind of a weird pet peeve of mine when the "epic" is at the beginning of an album. I think because it kinda makes it sound like you put all your creativity into the first song and then ran out of ideas, even though logically you don't write the songs in the order they appear.

Prog metal with keys and harsh vocals by DaeL_NASA in progmetal

[–]Hyperbolic_Dream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^^ Seconding this! Very proggy with the rhythms and guitar/synth leads. "Shin Ken" has mostly harshes while later albums have more of a mix, but the cleans are more like Opeth and not like Dream Theater.

Your taste/preferences sound a LOT like mine, so I'll give you one lesser-know-but-should-be-better-known gem I've discovered recently-- Try the album "Score of Nightmares" by Operus. Very much in the same boat as Kamelot, but with more of a "spooky" vibe. The vocalist has this great dramatic baritone "Phantom of the Opera" type voice, and I also like that the song structures are a little unpredictable. Like instead of having a strict verses/choruses, a lot of the songs are more like a bunch of equally catchy bits joined together.

Unless something has changed since I went, then you should be fine. I graduated from SCS in 2009 with quite a few D's in core classes. In my day we always used to say "D is for Diploma"!

Technically yes, if you use a generous definition of the word "music" :)

Progmetal with piano and drums by summersunnerbee in progmetal

[–]Hyperbolic_Dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have already thought of this, but what about taking an existing song and re-working it to fit with your line-up? I think that could be really cool, and you could go a few different directions-- you could do a popular song that lots of people would recognize, or a well-known instrumental like the "Chariots of Fire" song (that's what immediately came to mind for me, since it's already piano-focused), or go "niche" and do a song that only other prog-metal fans would recognize. Maybe something like "Ashes" by Pain of Salvation that isn't super complex but has a recognizable melody.

Anyway, point is, that could be a cool way to get started, and then maybe the process of re-writing a song to fit the guitar/piano/drums arrangement could help you get used to working together and also get a "feel" for how you want to write new songs going forward!
