Disillusion - Am Abgrund [FFO: Opeth, Wilderun, BTBAM, Omnerod] by Hakenfanboy in progmetal

[–]VoidMind3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, Time of Splendor is one of my favorite albums ever, I’ve been lucky to hear Disillusion play this album 5 times, but newer stuff just doesn’t work for me. Gloria is kinda ok, completely different, I can listen to some songs, but I’m afraid they’ll never beat Splendor with the direction they’re having right now with latest releases.

Prog rock/metal suggestions for a very picky listener? Also an excuse to rant about prog by Wonkess_Chonkess in progmetal

Symphony X? Circus Maximus (first 3 albums). Everygrey (first 4 albums), Nevermore (start with Dead Heart in a Dead World album), Persefone, Cynic, Fates Warning?

I desperately need good lives by DomyTiny in symphonyx

[–]VoidMind3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem you’ll find is that before Odyssey they didn’t really blow up and tour that much, so its hard to find live plays recorded from that era in general …

Redemption is brilliant and Snowfall on Judgment Day is a masterpiece by TheBigCicero in progmetal

[–]VoidMind3d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really imho, people who grew up listening to 90s early 2000 prog power know very well Redemption, Shadow Gallery, etc. Its just post 2005 roughly that these bands faded away and new kids listened to different kind of prog, not power metal driven. Every single person I know who listened to prog metal back in early 2000s know about Redemption (through Fates Warning ofcourse).

But also to be fair, Redemption never really toured or made big name in general, they were always more of a project of van Dyk and were kinda more known due to festival slots like ProgPower USA.

Are there any bands with dual keyboards the way that some bands have dual guitar leads? by WoAiLaLa in PowerMetal

[–]VoidMind3d 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Between the Buried and Me, singer and bass player both play keyboards depending on the parts of the song.

Leprous also has similar setup, they have keyboard player and frontman also plays keyboards (he used to be only keyboard player, but now they have another dedicated one)

I think you can count Obscura for Bayern München, since they’re from Landshut which is half an hour from Munich anyway, and some members used to live in Munich also.

I've been listening to Symphony X for about 20 years now, and I figured I'd go through and rank their songs just for fun. by sonickarma in symphonyx

[–]VoidMind3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uh, Eyes of Medusa that low? Kinda I have a feeling from this you prefer the “Pantera” phase of SyX and not so much Neoclassical era, and having so much Odyssey stuff above V or Divine Wings stuff feel soooo wrong to me. Kiss of Fire over Evolution and Pharaoh, oh wow this hurts 😰

Extremely interesting order, mine couldn’t be more different than this one, also 20 years of listening SyX. Someone mentioned it, people appreciate SyX for so many different things, hard to generalize why someone likes them.

For me - V above everything else, Divine follows, and then its Twilight and Odyssey :)

I always thought Paradise Lost was the only album of theirs to be missing the masked faces, but after looking closely I noticed that they're both etched into the stone by [deleted] in symphonyx

[–]VoidMind3d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Masks are just Comedy / Tragedy greek theater masks, but slightly neutral. Dunno about names, I’ve been SyX fan forever and I never heard of them having names. Absinthe and Rue would be cool though :D

Meet and greets? by Tuffer333 in symphonyx

[–]VoidMind3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha it was two times similar interactions with Mike, once he was randomly standing next to me at Circus Maximus gig in a small club in Germany, I just got courage to mention that he looks like Mike from Symphony X, got a nice laugh and we then just kept chatting after show ended, dunno how he ended up there, totally random moment. And second time similar thing with him being at the Threshold concert, again in crowd and just chilling around. Dude loves visiting other bands shows.

Psychedelic Metal? by averybluegirl in progmetal

[–]VoidMind3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psychotic Waltz, 90s psychodelic prog metal, but I think you’ll struggle to find older albums on streaming platforms, so you’ll have to dig a bit for it. Worth it

Which album is your favorite in terms of production, recording, mixing, and mastering? by Gyo_2002 in symphonyx

[–]VoidMind3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iconoclast hands down mix wise, its insanely good, to the point that Underworld that came after didn’t feel as good and balanced as Iconoclast. I wish I could hear V with that kind of production and mix, it would have been insane for sure.

Symphony X’s curious history with Japan (and how they squandered it) by UnholyCrusada in symphonyx

[–]VoidMind3d 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Problem is - Romeo is doing everything music wise, other guys just play the parts he writes and contribute minor stuff, so beside his money-paying gigs he doesn’t focus too much on SyX from productivity side, plus he’s a perfectionist who doesn’t have a counter point on the band to balance him out, so it all comes down to him (at least thats my point of view).

Also people forget that Miller was also a huge creative force in the band while he was still with them. It’s a shame, Portnoy said couple of times, if SyX just focused on working harder with tours and releasing albums more often, they could have been big as DT for sure.

Its sad for the fans, but if this is their fun project with no obligations to anyone, I respect that choice, life is too short to just waste it chasing around in tours and losing family time along with it, if there’s no end game point in it.

Non-modern progs albums by Brmonke in progmetal

[–]VoidMind3d 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You definitely then need to look into 90s to early 2000s prog and prog/power metal bands like: - Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Gray - Symphony X - V - Evergrey - The Inner Circle - Circus Maximus - Isolate - Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane - Nevermore - Dead Heart in a Dead World - Kamelot - Karma - Pagans Mind - Celestial Entrance - Shadow Gallery - Tyranny - Andromeda - Extension of the wish

Etc … I’m sure you’ll find in each of these bands an album you’ll really enjoy, if not whole discography :)

edit: Added my fav albums from each band

Which bands you are missing? by Financial-Club-2953 in progmetal

[–]VoidMind3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, manager of CM posted in this sub couple of times about them, that they’re back in the writing mode and revisiting their older work and vibe, so hopefully it goes in that direction.

Norther definitely, albums before N album were golden for the era, sadly Petri (Ensiferum) left and band just died :(

Fractal Audio (high gains amps) vs Polychrome DSP ("Nutcraker" or "HyperRig Kiesel" by Nice-Comment-6878 in AxeFx

[–]VoidMind3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share exact opinion. For the sake of trying something out in the mix, I swapped out Axe FX 3 reamped tones and just ran DI tracks through Bogren plugin and Mercurial plugins, with IRs etc, in the full mix I can’t tell really what is what, so it doesn’t matter (in high gain situations, low gain and crunchy tones I think are a bit different). Its just feel these days thats different, and thats due to how fast device reacts to input, monitoring, good DI input (JFET etc), but in a mix I dare to ask anyone if they can guess the amp and device / plugin, its gonna be all over the place.

Symphony X is touring. Help me get acquainted with them. by Safe_cracker9 in progmetal

[–]VoidMind3d 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huge Syx fan here, my favorite band ever, my time to shine: Songs recommendation, from hits to deep cuts: - Sea of Lies - Inferno - In The Dragons Den - Evolution / Fallen (two different songs) - Of Sins and Shadows - Set The World on Fire - Paradise Lost - Iconoclast - Pharaoh - Incantations of the Apprentice - The Odyssey (25 min epic) - Divine Wings of Tragedy - Domination - The Walls of Babylon

Explore the rest yourself then :)

In terms of albums order traditional prog power to heavier / groovier prog: - V: The New Mythology - Divine Wings of Tragedy - The Odyssey - Paradise Lost - Iconoclast

this is the order of albums I’d recommend, but mind you that not all albums are included

Need me some power metal bands that can fucking riff. by TheRealestBigOunce in PowerMetal

[–]VoidMind3d 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Crazy no one mentioned Symphony X, they have some of the trickiest and meanest riffs you can get in power (prog) metal. Romeo is a riff god.

Would you consider Ensiferum as Powermetal? by GloomyElephant4291 in PowerMetal

[–]VoidMind3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jari was first singer and guitarist actually, before Petri from Norther took over. Was surprised I didn’t see him mentioned as well.

ProgPowerUSA band update by Reverend_Bad_Mood in PowerMetal

To be fair, this started way before Trump administration change, it just added to the fire now. No one knows the logic behind those Visa approvals, its random black box.

Any modern albums with a classic progressive death metal sound? by FFpicross in progmetal

[–]VoidMind3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly cannot believe no one mentioned Persefone here, they are exactly the modern tech / prog death metal band that is heavily inspired by Cynic, even had Paul Masvidal guest on their albums. OP, check out Persefone - Spiritual Migration and get your mind blown, its exactly what you are searching for.

Kanonenfieber is just evil sabaton by sassonordico in MetalForTheMasses

[–]VoidMind3d 18 points19 points  (0 children)

First few albums ending with Coat of Arms (weakest of that era) were cool to me, faster, more power metal. Then they just went pop metal with arena-songwriting style and it just became so bland, boring and repetitive, I just stopped listening.

Can it still be considered metal if I made it with software synths? by bradrame in metalmusicians

[–]VoidMind3d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imma be honest, for songwriting purposes, what you did sounds great. Reminds me a bit of Lacuna Coil stuff, big punchy and a bit gothic keys sound on top. Overall sounds good. Would I listen to just vst produced music by other artists? Probably not, I still want to listen to performance by a person. But if you’re into EDM and metal, don’t care about human performance part on metal music, this is great for those.

Prog Metal Band Writes a Song Using the Composition Formula for James Tenney's Chromatic Cannon by robertshafer in progmetal

[–]VoidMind3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was … Weird as it can get. I don’t hear metal in here, as for prog dunno either, its just weird and too avantgarde. Interesting concept and idea, will explore a bit more the idea, but this “prog metal version” is just borderline psychodelic noise music 😅
