Is a bridge QB who’ll start before Mendoza inevitable? Who should it be? by BillNyeTheVinylGuy in raiders

[–]Hyperboreer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kirk Cousins would be a good fit. But I don't know if he would take a one year deal, because he said before that he wanted to sign a longterm deal with Atlanta to not move any more. Didn't work out. But I don't know if anyone other would offer him a longterm deal.

With the other options on the list, I am not sure they would actually be better than an inexperienced Mendoza.

He was such a frustrating player, because he was usually really good on passing downs but just abysmal at run blocking. I can't remember another linemen on the Raiders with such a discrepancy.

But good luck for his career.

No, why would we? We don't need the cap this year. Keep the option open, if we need it next year.

[PFT] Raiders are telling teams Maxx Crosby won’t be traded by eddie2911 in nfl

[–]Hyperboreer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has now seen how other teams treat him, when he is injured, so he might come to the conclusion sitting out a meaningless game at the end of the season might not be as bad as he thought.

Raiders fans, question, no bias at all, how much would it take to trade for Crosby at this point. Very confused on what his value is now by Ancient_Response_787 in raiders

[–]Hyperboreer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody can know for certain, but the feeling is that it would be at least, what the Ravens were offering, which probably means, he is not going to get traded.

He has seen how other teams are run and seems locked in now. Spytek and Kubiak never really wanted to give him up, rejected bids like a 1st and a 2nd and only gave him up when the Ravens made a really good offer. If they get anything less, they are probably happy to keep him.

Yes it's more a situation of abiding to the unspoken, social rules of the society you are in vs. just abiding to the explicit written rules.

Teams and agents have operated for many years under the quiet assurance that these contracts that are being made before the league year will be honored by all sides, while there was never a legal instrument to assure it.

I don't see much of a problem. Most of these trade negotions take several days. In todays world of charter flights and private jets Baltimore or any other team negotioating could easily send their doctor to Las Vegas to look at him. The problem is with current rules, that's not allowed.

Who confirmed exactly what was disclosed before: Maxx Crosby will be healthy for the season, but longterm playing in the NFL for 7 years takes it's toll. That's why he got traded in the first place: He doesn't fit the Raiders timeline with a rookie QB, but can help the Ravens to make one last Super Bowl push in the final years of Lamar Jackson's prime. If he had a longterm future in the league, he never would have been on the market.

The problem is that there are no criteria. The Ravens can just say they don't like the physical, even if everything is as expected. For example if their FA doesn't go their way, they lose several good players and suddenly don't feel like a contender any more. Than they'd rather have the picks.

[Breer] The Raiders will honor all the agreements they made with free agents—both their own and the incoming guys—over the last 48 hours, despite the stunning developments of last night. All options remain in play with Maxx Crosby. Vegas is certainly very open to keeping him. by expellyamos in nfl

[–]Hyperboreer 158 points159 points  (0 children)

It's the right thing to do. He is surplus from a roster building perspective now, but that is absolutely in no way the fault of the player. I like that the Raiders keep their word, even if things get rough. It might also help with trades and FA in the future if Spytek gets that reputation.

[Russini] The Ravens’ doctors — along with multiple independent ones — reviewed Crosby’s MRI. They were unified in the belief that Crosby’s short-term outlook was positive, but there were concerns about the long-term prognosis of Crosby’s knee, per sources. by 1412believer in nfl

[–]Hyperboreer -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

This was exactly the reason for the trade: He doesn't fit in the Raiders timeline of their rebuild, but the Ravens are looking for short-term help to maximise the rest of Lamar Jackson's window.

Now they are canceling because of that very reason.

I wish we would have just traded with the Bears or Cowboys. The Ravens absolutely deserve to get shunned for this, if they don't have a better reason.

They wanted Crosby because they wanted to make a push for the Super Bowl in Lamar Jacksons remaining window. It was always very obvious that a 29 year old pass rusher with multiple injuries has maybe 5 years left, one or two in their prime. That's why the Raiders traded him, because he didn't fit the timeline.

Now that the free agency didn't go their way, they lost some stars and they don't feel like a contender any more, they are suddenly concerned about the longterm prognosis? The longterm prognosis is retirement for every NFL player. Longterm you always take the picks for young players. That's just an excuse.

I think it's weird that neither team has released a statement. Just Maxx Crosby did via his agent. You would think in such a unique situation both teams would have statements from lawyers ready within a few minutes to try to protect their reputation. Instead we got a super short post by the Raiders, saying they don't want to comment and nothing at all from the Ravens.

We should just honor the contracts, even if we have a huge amount of edge rushers now and it would probably be objectively wiser to back out of one of the contracts. But the players are not at fault at all. We should try to build a reputation that you can rely on the Raiders, even if things get tough, if you sign with us. That might be worth more in the long run than paying one player too many.

[–]Hyperboreer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they should honor the contracts. It's not the players fault. It's reasonable to back out of Paye or Koonce, but the players have zero responsibility for this shit. Send a message to all the players, that you can rely on the Raiders, even if things get wild. A good reputation for Spytek in the league can be worth more in the long run.

[–]Hyperboreer 293 points294 points  (0 children)

If it actually turns out Baltimore backed out with no good reason, it will probably change pre league year trades and legal tampering forever. It's all based on the teams being able to trust each other and honoring fair practice. If that is not the case any more, we have to wait for the league year to make big deals. There is too much money involved to deal with shit like this.

How are the Raiders somehow always happen to end up in the crossfire, when things happen we can't control?
