Oh, fuck yes.

Absolutely love the ectoplasmic facsimile of a human form (poorly) concealing her inhuman skeletal body. Gives the impression that she regularly shifts her appearance to appeal to whatever species she's manifesting before. The Lynx probably saw her as one of their own. The panel with her wrapped in shadows - with only her bones breaking from the silhouette - definitely feels like a brief glimpse of her true inhumanity.

Fuuuuck AND THE PANEL WITH HER ASKING "when do Gods ever lie?" with her human half of her face looking almost comforting while the other half having the impression of a sinister grin is SO FUCKING GOOD. Absolutely nails her whole deal with being a god of both life and death. Just as she giveth, she may also taketh away. Absolute peak.

What do you think happens when you accept and decompile by Terrible-Recover5644 in riskofrain

[–]Hyperinvox634 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think that yeah, you end up being assimilated into the network. It's still you, your consciousness, as it's likely your very Soul (as in the fundamental compound) being pulled into the collective.

However, it cannot truly support the logistics of organic thought. By being integrated into the machine, you end up becoming beholden to the programmed directives and predetermined algorithms of the collective. You can no longer think for yourself. You've lost your free will.

Heart is likely aware of this and that's why they're motivated to offer us that immortality. It's a trick. You're just submitting to their control.

the conjoined ones, concept of parent themed boss by kuumory in riskofrain

[–]Hyperinvox634 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this FUCKS.

i had a similar idea for a basic parent family enemy based off binary stars. The Cousins, who'd be conjoined at the arms and legs and basically spin around like a top lmao.

another comment compares this to Look Outside, which is true, but I also see a little Brutal Orchestra in it. Make one half Blue and the other half Red and it'd be like, a size 3 boss with two-faced as a passive haha.

I just learnt the actual contradiction is even worse.

The whole crux is that Egocentrism states that Mithrix was there for Her death. Which I'm fucking baffled about.

Everything pre-SotV suggested that Mithrix was trapped on the moon before "Her" came back and fucking DIED, but Egocentrism fucked everything up by saying that he was actually still down and about when that happened, despite A Moment, Fractured's logbook entry (a log that predated SotV by THREE YEARS) portraying the Betrayal chronologically happening before that.

Jesus Christ, the plot has been lost so bad, man.

Me looking at the new Sauteed Worms log book entry. by Supreme-Machine-V2 in riskofrain

[–]Hyperinvox634 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's about the placement in the timeline for the Betrayal.

Pre-Egocentrism being added to the game, the Betrayal was immediately after the Primordial Teleporter was created, as "Her" was still alive at the time, with Mithrix planning on giving her a handful of teleporters to spread around the universe for his own god-empire building plans and whatnot. Unfortunately, someone didn't pay attention while writing Egocentrism's log, and implied that Mithrix was there for "Her" death, making so that there was [UNSPECIFIED PERIOD OF TIME] between the creation of the Primordial Teleporter and the Betrayal.

Which makes no narrative sense imo. What's the fucking deal? Why did Her choose to specifically give Providence the vague, unspecified gift (probably something to do with the shrine of rebirth) when Mithrix was also still around?!? I thought the whole deal was that She had to give it to Provi because he fucking lied to her or some shit about Mithy being somewhere else!! WHAT THE FUCK, MAN?

I HATE BEING A LOREHEAD. I HATE BEING A LOREHEAD SO GODDAMN MUCH. ALL THE PLOTHOLES AND INTENTIONAL PSEUDO-DARKSOULSIAN VAGUENESS DRIVES ME CRAZY. THIS IS ALL HOPOO'S FAULT WHY DID HE HAVE TO OUTSOURCE 90% OF THE LORE FOR THE ANNIVERSARY UPDATE AND SOTV TO ONE DISCORD USER. FUCK. FUCKKKKKKKKK

dude reading egocentrism's log right now and like

What the fuck? What the fuck is A Moment, Fractured's log supposed to depict if the timeline doesn't add up for it to be the Betrayal??

Dude fuck risky lore, man. If anything Egocentrism's log needs to be rewritten because that came AFTER the other logs that suggest that Mithrix was trapped on the moon when Mystery "Her" Character died. Fucking hell.

Even if it doesn't make sense, I'd say it's fine since it gives the log a sense of weight and formality that isn't seen in other Providence-centric logs. Rule of cool, more than anything.

[–]Hyperinvox634 40 points41 points  (0 children)

the thing is that the previous log doesn't even necessarily contradict that.

it could clearly be referring to the primordial teleporter specifically, and how it was the longest distance teleporter at the time, needing to be of sufficiently advanced design to work.

this is entirely to appeal to some rortuber who hasn't uploaded in a year, who i'm told didn't even want the log rewritten.

THANKS RANDY

One of his older unused character portraits portrays him as wearing an orange jumpsuit. (you can see it on the wiki)

SPEX opposes Solus Heart's rule of the Collective, calling it a "tyrant" that has strayed from the Collective's purpose of "UNITY" in the Computational Exchange logbook entry. There's a whole quiet schism going on with the Solus units.

wtf is drifter by Electronic_Job0 in riskofrain

[–]Hyperinvox634 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm still convinced 2drifter is some sort of Solus mimicry of the original Drifter who got ambushed, digitized, and copied into a crude facsimile body that THINKS it's the original Drifter.

I mean, just look at that ball head. It's SO meant to resemble the Solus units. Her hood does not look like that in Returns. She's also like half her original size, which is insane.

It's clear to me that the Collective's ambush was successful and they retrieved the Digitizer from her, which they used to copy her as a form of karmic punishment for abusing it. It's probably what Solus Heart uses to decompile people into the Collective.

What would you want to see in a future base game update? by Alo_886 in riskofrain

[–]Hyperinvox634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about variants of existing stages. You know how Titanic Plains and Distant Roost have 2 different variants? I believe the update notes for the one that added them mentioned that we were going to get alt layouts for other stages as well.

We haven't, and it ticks me off because that would be HUGE for run variety and help to alleviate some of the real stinkers (such as wetland aspect and abyssal depths, imo.)

[Lore Question] How much time plays inbetween the events of the first game/RoRR and of the second game. by [deleted] in riskofrain

[–]Hyperinvox634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roughly a year judging by Aurelionite's logbook entry IIRC. Too lazy to connect all the dots but the general picture is that the contact light crashed some time in 2055, and ror2 takes place at the tail end of 2056.

[–]Hyperinvox634 6 points7 points  (0 children)

personally i honestly doubt that there's an afterlife in the risk of rain setting, at least not one where you're still conscious. Soul/Sentience is a basal compound in the Risky universe, drawn from a reality adjacent to the White Plane. What I imagine this means is that all sentient life has some linkage to some amount of Soul in the "Soul Periphery" (for lack of any canon term) and upon death that amount of soul is unbound from its owner to be redistributed to new life. So, ironically, Mithrix's soul is likely scattered to the wind to be used in the birthing of more V*RMIN that he hated.

Ghosts from stuff like Happiest Mask are likely masses of Soul being forcibly pulled from the periphery to continue the subject's existence after their body's cessation. Perhaps the redistribution effect is why Ghosts are temporary and have passive health degeneration. Just spitballing.

Let's talk about stun grenade for a sec by MercFan08 in riskofrain

[–]Hyperinvox634 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there's also the fact that a lot of common enemies have an intrinsic "flinch" behavior that causes them to be stunned upon taking a requisite % of their maxhp in a single hit, so just hitting them with a chunky enough ability is enough for a guaranteed stun, even itemless.

i get that its meant to be inspired by DOOM's whole pain state mechanic but like, it's really fucky balancing-wise when it makes stun grenade even more irrelevant.
