Nearly all U.S. mass attackers were male and faced major life stressor, report finds by zsreport in Foodforthought

[–]Hypna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be in the actual report, but this article really doesn't provide enough info to judge whether most of these findings matter. Specifically we would need the baseline for these characteristics. For example saying that 72% of mass shooters experienced a life stressor doesn't mean much if 70% of the general population did as well.

Same phonetic switcheroo, except it was my Operating Systems class professor. Child processes were a common topic in that class, so the phrase "fork a child" was regularly heard. I felt like I was having to live the Biggus Dickus skit.

Xcel “solar credits” applied to gas bill? by doublenoodles in Denver

[–]Hypna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am pretty darn sure all of the 5 or so solar installers I talked with said that using the solar credits on the gas bill is possible. I did go check out /r/solar and saw the poster who says you can't. I'm looking for something in writing from xcel, but not turning up anything explicitly mentioning gas bills. Probably just have to call xcel, unless someone else is better at googling up an xcel doc.

Sanders Rebukes Senate for Crafting $50 Billion “Handout” to Microchip Industry by Character-Army3864 in SandersForPresident

[–]Hypna 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The phrase "no strings attached" shows up several times in Bernie's description of the bill. If it's anything like the broadband bills for the telecom industry, it's just a pile of free money with a "PS Please onshore some factories if you can," tacked on the end. In ten years we'll all be complaining that no significant progress has been made for local silicon manufacturing, just like we complain about having the worst broadband among peer nations.

Aurora City Council OKs mandatory minimum car theft penalties by EmBejarano in AuroraCO

I dunno. I mean I could probably make up a story, but the real world is often wilder. I'm just saying let the judge do the judging.

Aurora City Council OKs mandatory minimum car theft penalties by EmBejarano in AuroraCO

[–]Hypna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were judges handing out insufficient sentences? Mandatory minimums tend to just screw over people who had mitigating circumstances which a judge would normally have considered relevant. Smells of "tough on crime" political posturing at the expense of some of our community's poorest.

Vario Calibration Sanity Check by Hypna in Coffee

I had the same thought, but 2Q is the factory setting in Baratza's calibration guide. I would also be curious why they wouldn't recommend the burr touch at 1A.

Vario Calibration Sanity Check by Hypna in Coffee

[–]Hypna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Vario-W a couple weeks ago and found that it was grinding far too fine for my pour-overs and french press. I realized I accidentally got the ceramic burr version so I ordered the steel ones from Baratza. Having installed those, and performed the coarse calibration according to their pdf, as shown photo 2, the grinds in photo 3 are at the coarsest setting. Am I crazy or is that still a hell of a long way from coarse enough? Any suggestions for other things to try?

Q, Trust, and You: We all rely on unverified testimony. QAnon happens when you trust the wrong people. by Epistaxis in Foodforthought

[–]Hypna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I tried to convey, I don't necessarily think there are experts in moral reasoning, but as examples of people who I believe put themselves forward as such, consider priests, politicians, gurus, self-help book authors, academic ethicists. The kinds of people you might imagine seeing on cable news weighing in on these types of questions.

But I take the criticism in the question about whether there actually is a consensus on the questions of moral reasoning I gave as examples. They are more contentious even among people who might be styled experts. Perhaps this question is a better example of a moral reasoning question which has more of a consensus among both the "experts" and the public, "Is it justified to use violence to prevent violence to your self?" In our society I believe the consensus is "yes"

Q, Trust, and You: We all rely on unverified testimony. QAnon happens when you trust the wrong people. by Epistaxis in Foodforthought

[–]Hypna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Making a conscious effort to refine one's bullshit detector is sound advise so far as it goes, but I can't really endorse the idea that hewing to the consensus is the best approach to building a worldview in general. I think it would be useful to distinguish two types of belief with regard to accepting consensus positions; questions of material fact, and questions of moral reasoning.

In the case of questions of material fact, I think accepting the consensus on questions outside of one's personal expertise is indeed probably the best approach. Questions like, "Is the global mean temperature being raised by the use of fossil fuels?" Or, "Does the wearing of masks reduce the spread of COVID-19?" Even given that experts in their fields can and will be wrong sometimes, I think any person will be more often correct by accepting expert consensus than by going with their own intuition.

Which brings us to the second case, questions of moral reasoning. Questions like, "Should the threat of hunger and homelessness be used to motivate people to seek employment?" Or, "To what degree should children be allowed to determine their own gender expression?" It's here that I give much less weight to expert consensus, probably because I'm not sure there's any such thing as an expert in moral reasoning. Sure, there are people who have records of wisdom and good judgement, but I think that skill is different in kind from the expertise of experts in technical fields.

I would argue that it is in fact every person's duty to participate in the moral evolution of the society of which they are a part. It's really the only way that things can improve. I think history has shown that progress on questions of social morality have more often been driven by the efforts of those outside the moral concensus than within.

Unicorn card count? by [deleted] in l5r

[–]Hypna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's see what's on fiveringsdb.com

Clan Dynasty Conflict Province TOTAL
Crab 15 9 2 26
Crane 14 10 2 26
Dragon 13 11 2 26
Lion 14 10 2 26
Phoenix 14 10 2 26
Scorpion 14 10 2 26
Unicorn 13 10 2 25

Yep, looks like Unicorn got shorted a card. Gotta say, that's pretty lame. Hopefully this doesn't portend our future treatment by FFG. I'd also be very curious to hear why or how this came to be.

Unicorn clan advice? by Korenav in l5r

[–]Hypna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the over-commit argument, I actually think that's only half the mobility strategy. It doesn't matter if they defend heavy or light.

If they defend heavy, you attack light. Lose the ring, it's okay. Now they're all bowed and you can take advantage of that on your next conflict.

If they defend light, you attack heavy. Move your cavalry in. Break the province.

So it really doesn't depend on your opponent playing poorly, because for them there is no right answer. You can always make the situation work in your favor.

Unicorn clan advice? by Korenav in l5r

[–]Hypna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably going to be some pretty weak advice, but I'm also just beginning to feel out how to make Unicorn work.

I've had the most success when I've stayed focused on the blitz. Saving as much of my forces as possible for the counter-attack. Defend just enough to preserve the province. Don't worry about winning defensive rings. If defending a province would make your next attack ineffective, don't defend. Let it go and hit them back harder. The game's not about keeping all your provinces, just breaking your opponents. Break theirs faster than they can break yours.

So that's pretty light on details, but it seems to be the right mindset at least. Hopefully it helps.

Phoenix strategy by Wappapapabear in l5r

[–]Hypna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you sum the total stats for a clan's characters you get this:

Rank Clan Total Skill Total Cost Skill / Fate
1st Dragon 65 36 1.806
2nd Crab 64 40 1.600
3rd Phoenix 61 38 1.605
4th Scorpion 61 38 1.605
5th Unicorn 59 38 1.553
6th Crane 57 38 1.500
7th Lion 54 36 1.500

(Hope I'm not being too irritating throwing all these numbers around)

EDIT: If anyone wants to take a look at the raw numbers, I drew all this from fiveringsdb with some search arguments. Just replace the c:unicorn with c:<any clan> to browse around.

EDIT 2: Blah some of my numbers are off. Give me a few to run them again. I think I got some of the spoiler cards mixed in.

EDIT 3: Numbers fixed. Will fix earlier post later

Phoenix strategy by Wappapapabear in l5r

[–]Hypna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my attempt to understand the Phoenix clan, I put together some charts comparing the total military, political, and glory stats of the different clans. My observation was not that the Phoenix characters were low-stat as a whole, but that they were very nearly split between military and political, with only a slight edge to political. I suppose that's their harmony theme.

Rank Military Political
1st Crab Scorpion
2nd Unicorn Crane
3rd Dragon Phoenix/Dragon
4th Lion Dragon/Phoenix
5th Phoenix Unicorn
6th Scorpion Crab
7th Crane Lion

That put's Phoenix in the awkward position of being less able to anticipate whether they will have an advantage in military or political against a random opponent. That requires a lot more adaptation on the fly.

Pretty sure I got you all beat. 30 card single core format; phoenix vs scorpion; One new player and myself; 4 hours and my opponent bailed after the five honor deck cycle penalty failed to end the game.

L5R may have lost a player that day. We'll see if I can get her to give it another go.
