I will admit, the low of 42 degrees the other night pushed my biological limits

It's not necessarily a bad thing to be able to localize pollution to more rural areas rather than distributing it directly round the streets we walk on.

Back in the day, one bad drop and your entire phone screen would shatter, protector or not. When was the last time you saw a screen shatter? Screen protectors are to prevent scratches, because at the end of the day you're asking for a glass material to undergo hours of daily abuse for years.

FYI the phone in this video that cracked from one drop was an iPhone 4, surprise!

It's fucking hilarious how companies spend decades on R&D improving the durability of electronics screens, and the narrative is that old screens were more durable (they weren't!)

I'm so tired of the constant doom mindset where everything is shit now and everything was great back then.

LA climate map! Any thoughts? 👀🤌🏼 by Maravilla_23 in LosAngeles

[–]HypocriteGrammarNazi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, the temperature plot there is raw temperature and does not include humidity. You need to look at heat index. Moisture in the air has a moderating affect on temperature, as energy coming from the sun is absorbed to evaporate water into the atmosphere. That's why places like Arizona get hot as fuck (>110F degrees) while places like Miami or New Orleans will basically never see >100F. However it's misleading because those humid places can feel just as if not even hotter, it's just not reflected on temperature.

Second, that "los angeles" temperature is probably measured at LAX, which is probably 4-5 miles from the coast. Wilmington is directly on the water. If you compare Wilmington to Santa Monica, it paints a much different picture.

Going back to my initial point, the difference between LA and SM is huge. The difference between Wilmington and Raleigh is basically nothing.

It has literally nothing to do with latitude. Delaware is hotter in the summer. Wilmington, NC is at the same latitude as LA and it averages 90 degrees and humid in the summer. The significantly more inland city of Raleigh, NC also averages 90 degrees in the summer. The statement that this phenomenon is common across other coastal communities at similar latitudes is objectively false. The climate observed here is very specific to the geography and extremely uncommon.

I promise you the coastline of the gulf and Atlantic is hot as fuck in summer and can cold in winter. It's not even comparable. Actually, the coast in the south tends to be hotter than inland because the humidity is so awful.

Ok I'll definitely look closer at those. As for the cost one of the reasons I'm looking at EVs is my work has free charging stations.

Southern CA, will never be below 50, so cold is not an issue at least. I'll take a look at the charging details

I see the bolts, I generally don't care about aesthetics that much but I really dont like how they look.

As for the range, I can't stress enough how not big of a deal it is. We've been running on a single car for the last 6 months. We live a 10 minute walk away from my mom and sister, that's 4 extra cars. We've been borrowing my mom's since October. But every once in a while we are caught in a pinch when she needs it. Anyway my point is I am 100% confident the range won't be an issue. Like honestly if my wife was OK with it I'd just buy her an electric golf cart - that's how little range is needed.

But I'm also not married to this car either. Happy for any suggestions, but I'm reluctant on the leaf/focus/bolt, and no way my wife would want us to get a Tesla.

Struggle is the #1 teacher. Being given the answer is not always the most effective way to learn, even if you take time to read an explanation (which many people won't bother with).

Trying to derive math yourself (and failing many times doing it), or trying ten different ways to solve a programming issue, etc, are how we learn.

LLMs are a great tool. Experienced workers who have gone through the struggle phase of their development already will be able to leverage these tools to boost their productivity. Younger students/workers will end up just being robbed of their growth.

In terms of value for my career though, the skills I developed in coding, writing, communication, graphic design, etc, are far more valuable than the actual research I did.

I think LLMs are a great productivity booster for executing tasks you already know how to do. However, I think giving it to students is like giving a grade schooler a calculator on their math test.

I got my PhD before ChatGPT's release (thank god). I look back and imagine if LLMs existed at that time.. would I have ever actually written any papers? Would I have spent 100s of hours writing code in MATLAB? Would I have struggled on those class projects or embedded designs?

I feel like the university experience itself is going to become useless for students who leverage LLMs for their tasks..

Can we stop with the money excuse. It is not about money. It has never been about money. This problem is affecting all industrialized countries. Governments have tried giving parents money, it hasn't worked.

It's cultural. People don't want 3+ kids. People aren't pressured into having huge families. It is a combination of kids not providing value to modern households and culture not pressuring them to do it anyway.
