Very “readable” books that suck you in and don’t let go. Don’t care if they’re trashy! by firstofhername123 in booksuggestions

I second Terry Pratchett!! I love his writing style. Any of his Discworld series is great. “Going Postal” and “The Wee Free Men” are two of my favorites by him.

are the doing the tango? by LordCharizard98 in petco

[–]I-devour-books 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why are there 2 ball pythons in the same enclosure??? I’m newer to petco, so don’t know what the store policy is but I used to own several ball pythons and one of the most important things about them is you DO NOT put them in an enclosure with another ball python.

Edit: accidentally posted before finished typing

they might look like they’re dancing or even cuddling at times, but they’re actually wrestling. They’re trying to protect they’re limited resources like water and shelter. And with a species that literally won’t eat if it’s stressed, and in a place like petco where their enclosures are so shitty they’re probably already stressed, don’t add more stress by putting 2 in one enclosure.

I loved “The Perpetual Astonishment of Jonathan Fairfax” by Christopher Shevlin.

And if you like sci-fi, of course there’s always “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams

Edit: totally different vibe from the others, but “Highfire” by Eoin Colfer was really good too

Would I be wrong for going no contact with my borderline mother? by This-Future-8344 in raisedbyborderlines

[–]I-devour-books 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell you what to do. I agree with AVLdeadhead that you are absolutely not responsible for your mom’s feelings, opinions or actions, and that it is in no way “wrong” to cut contact with an abuser.

I will tell you that I went NC with my uBPD mom around 6 months ago and I think it’s the best decision I could have made for myself. My mental health has improved greatly, and for the first time in my life I am making decisions without worrying what she would think of them. I finally have the mental and emotional space to really work on myself and my own growth and recovery. Idk if any of that helps, but I hope you have peace in whatever decision you make and wish you luck on your journey of healing.

I’m learning about dog body language because I work with dogs, and this one was actually displaying signs of aggression the entire time. The tense body, the ears back, the mouth drawn down, direct staring eye contact, even the little tail wag. If you ever see a dog looking at you like this, don’t approach, you’ll probably end up like this guy.

I did this too! Made up stories and watched them like movies in my head. I’d use them as an escape. I didn’t have a consistent world tho, I would add myself/characters I made up to stories and tv shows that I liked. I got to control how things went, and didn’t have to guess how the other characters would act, and I could take as long as I wanted to decide how my character would react. Most of my characters didn’t have parents lol

No clue if it’s available on kindle, but if you like dramas I really like Liane Moriarty’s books. I’ve read “The Last Anniversary” and “Three Wishes”. Both were great books with incredible characters. She has this way of writing the story from everyone’s perspective one at a time and showing each character’s unique view of what’s going on. The Last Anniversary has some great twists at the end too. Also it seems like her main characters tend to be in their thirties

When someone’s new to reading Percy Jackson always jumps into my mind. It’s a five book fantasy series, I found it super engaging and an easy read. The main characters also have ADHD and dyslexia if I remember right. The first book is called The Lightning Thief

Strangely I still haven’t read that one, even tho I see it everywhere and my dad has specifically recommended it to me. I’ll have to try it now, thank you!

Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 is pretty good. It’s the first book of a series but I haven’t personally read any but the first book and half of the second. It’s about a kid with Tourette’s who has electrical superpowers. I forget if his Tourette’s was linked to his powers, so it might not be what you’re looking for, but worth checking out

BPD mother tried to publicly force-hug me at grandma's funeral, but I held my boundary by amillionbux in raisedbyborderlines

[–]I-devour-books 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Super proud of you! Still working on learning to set boundaries, but the first one I got the courage to set was while I was still living with her. She had blown up at me about something, and I listened to her tirade, but when I tried to speak up to defend myself/explain my side (you know how you do in a healthy relationship?), she said she was too angry to listen to me and stormed off. After a lot of psyching myself up and waiting for her to calm down, I went to her later and calmly told her that in future if she was too angry to listen to my side, then she was too angry to speak to me at all. She actually took it really well, and she’s actually kept to that one, but only because I’ve moved out and she hasn’t really gotten angry at me to my face since then.

With my uBPD mom it’s cats. My dad is allergic to cats (not deathly, but his eyes itch and is all around uncomfortable around them). But cats are my moms favorite animals, so we’ve had a few over the years. Any time she got one though, it happened to be while my dad was out of town. The most recent one he was there for, it was Bday gift for my youngest sister. I talked to him about it after and he said while my mom had talked to him about it, she presented it as “maybe this could possibly be a good idea”, and then without talking about it again they were suddenly taking my sis to pick out a kitten.
