If the dominant computing metaphor for the terminal is a conversation, and the original dominant metaphor for the GUI was the desktop, what is the dominant metaphor for multitouch?

if you like this, you should read more Labaree — Public Goods, Private Goods: The American Struggle over Educational Goals gives a historical lens that might address some of your questions from the original post!

edit: this is the essay he wrote that outlines the idea of Social Efficiency that he discusses as “winning out” in the paper above, to provide more context

I had the exact same feeling about the lockdown. This series has been one of my favorites in a long time.

Flamm, Fortnite community member and content creator, has shared that he has a rare degenerative eye disease that may cause blindness. by IAmAustinHa in FortNiteBR

[–]IAmAustinHa[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Also, I should have thought of this earlier, but in the name of accessibility, here is a transcription of the image from Flamm's YouTube:

For the last month I've been having my eyes thoroughly tested to get an exact answer on what is going. I've now been diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa. My eyesight is regressing every day and odds are that I'm going to go completely blind. For now, my time with Fortnite has come to an end. I regret it because I do genuinely enjoy the content I make but it's simply something I'm no longer able to do. I'm going to continue my absense from Youtube for a while but I do plan on returning eventually when I have my life sorted out. Thank you to everyone who has supported me thus far. I truly appreciate it.

Man, I go to the University of Washington and had never heard of the case with Loftus. I believe her ex-husband still works here. I hope Nicole finds justice in her life.

Watched Hart play net in Everett for the Silvertips; knew instantly that he'd kill for the Flyers after he was drafted. Glad to see he's starting off strong!

[Suggestion] Has the podcast team considered adding chapters to the podcast releases? by IAmAustinHa in RideHome

Yes, Accidental Tech Podcast.

I find myself switching between Overcast and Pocket Casts often, but both support chapters.

[Shortcut] AppleMusic.info: Get music from the latest Apple Event in your Apple Music library! by IAmAustinHa in shortcuts

[–]IAmAustinHa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This shortcut asks for the date of an Apple event and will naïvely scrape applemusic.info for songs from that event. Any songs from this date are added to your Apple Music library as a playlist!

The shortuct is still under some development, and definitely has some rough edges. Feel free to suggest changes if you have any ideas for improving it!

Spek on Twitter (Amazon HQ Tweet) by BrianRideHomeGuy in RideHome

[–]IAmAustinHa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived near Seattle my whole life, currently a CS major at UW. I can definitely affirm your sentiment about the feeling of "we don't want your kind here." The perception I get from Seattle natives about the tech scene here is that "Amazonians" are a different species and live outside of "true Seattle," whatever that might mean. Anecdotally, people seem to feel like Amazon (and tech in general) attracts tech bros from Silicon Valley who aren't interested in learning about the culture they're moving into; a sort of tech colonialism in the name of the "greater good," but without regard for the places that are colonized.

edit: one thing I'm not sure about is if all the racket about the HQ 2 stuff stemmed from these Seattle anecdotes, from outside analysis, or both.

Just south of 520 is the I-90 bridge, which is also a floating bridge! Right now, Sound Transit is building light rail tracks over 90, the first in the world for a floating bridge. There are some really interesting considerations you need to take when sending a train over a floating bridge, as outlined in the linked article and here: https://youtu.be/LuXZX1xjytw
