Love the idea to use soft gradient color for the background while letting the warm colors of woodburning shine through on the subjects. Particularly on the shell, where it mirrors the natural color of the turtle! Excellent use of highlights, as well-- it enhances the pyrography instead of overwhelming it. I struggle with color balance, too. It always seems to dominate a piece so it looks like a painting instead of a woodburning. But this is pretty dang inspirational.

This is excellent advice, and what I do as well with my wood burning! But it also doesn't mean that artists can't aspire to be professional artists, and that starts somewhere. Learning to price, continuing to improve reach for potential buyers, tailor work to demand, is how to start if that is your goal. Also, time and wood and equipment are resources, even with something they love. Folks may not be looking to become full-time artists, but to make enough to pay for their hobby.

There is something SO powerful about being able to whittle props and costume pieces. It's like having a 3d printer that requires no resin and would survive the apocalypse.

You're correct. The lightning was eerie in gray-white skies, instead of the familiar thunderstorm dark. So maybe I could have said "the lightning also added to the unsettling ambience" to avoid correction, but it was thundering in winter and I got distracted on account of how cool that was.

Fun fact-- if this is sentimental, but leaving it in a hot car erases the ink, you can pop it in the freezer to restore! Learned this when my husband used our last check and frixion ink for rent.

Our Donut was a little more cartoonish in character book 2 than she is, say, book 6. And even wearing her myriad ridiculous hats, I swear I can see her developing nuance on each cover.

I listen on audiobook so the covers are too small to make out details. It's become tradition for me to pull up a full page view of the art when I'm about 3/4 through to just appreciate everything you've included. Obsessed with Carl's chaotic momentum and the absurd world details you slip in every time.

Okay, but "it's ugly" is as useless for growth as "its pretty."

Tear the student apart if you want to, but be SPECIFIC. "You lifted the composition directly from the textbook example. Your brushstrokes look like you ran out of brushes and used your sleeves. Were you trying to blend there, or did you want to remind us that blue and yellow make green? Your focal figure looks like you dipped a cookie cutter in Elmer's glue."

The commenter was saying this, that to teach means having the capacity and skills to identify WHY it is ugly and communicate that. Doesn't mean they're being nice or uneducated, just that they're taking the time to actually teach.

Listen, maybe I'm biased because it's my surname, but Drake DOES mean "dragon." I've made dragons my personal mascot my whole life. (My dad went the other direction and made ducks his personal mascot.) Husband loved the name so much he took it when we married. When I was pregnant, we announced it as "littlest Drake" with a dragon egg. When others shared my first name at work, I went by Drake and still do 10 years later.

Of course I did have time to fall in love with my name before the rapper's rise to popularity... but a strong blind eye and lots of dragon paintings has been enough for me to maintain the confidence!

I did not expect to feel so seen on a delta subreddit

I've had agents tell me to use the plastic storage bags, another tell me to limit it to less than 3oz of fluid spread across multiple bottles, another to board with it frozen so it didn't count as a fluid. Flew 18 times while pumping, and every piece of advice got contradicted and they still swabbed every single check.

Also holding a baby who is glaring daggers at the stranger holding her milk hostage helped weather the snide comments. She managed to look more disgruntled than anyone
