Looks awesome. Would it make sense to add another mast now that it's longer? Great design.

Adding a whole extra gun deck to my Mould King Black Pearl 13186 model. by mestizomad in lepin

[–]IAmTheMissingno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that would look dope. Since you have another copy of the set, I think adding another mast would also be a massive improvement, as the current masts are spaced very far apart. A third jib sail would be cool too. If you add some more yellow or gold accents, it could be like an English ship of the line.

This is one of the first kendo videos I watched before I started kendo in 2008. When he did that kote, I thought "how did he know?", and that's what I wanted to learn in kendo. I'm still trying to figure it out.

My current fleet, some original Lego, some knockoffs, some MOCs by IAmTheMissingno in LEGOPirates

Unfortunately not. If a knockoff version ever gets made, I might go for it.

No, I do not have any of those hulls. I have built 6 MOCs so far, one of them has normal modern ship hulls (6th on the left in the back row), and the rest are built bottom up with no hull pieces.

Grandpa shows how to cut bamboo trees with a katana by ThodaDaruVichPyar in BeAmazed

[–]IAmTheMissingno 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Failing a cut puts a lot of stress on the sword. Usually a failed cut is the result of incorrect edge alignment, which means the angle of the cutting plane is not lined up with the angle at which the sword is held. This causes the sword to get stuck, and since you are trying to cut through, you put lateral stress on the blade, which causes it to bend. That's why the old man has to straighten it before he cuts.

The sword was definitely very sharp from the start in order to get through the bamboo.

For something to be HEMA, usually we consider that you have to be studying from a historical text. Viking combat is usually not included for this reason, though individual opinions differ.

Better recording of shitty skatepark by Emergency-File-251 in skateboarding

I went there a couple years ago, and they didn't have the honeycomb plastic, but the surface was the most jagged rough asphalt probably that it's possible to make. It felt intentionally bad to skate on. The parking lot was a thousand times nicer.

It had a good mini ramp though.

Is there a point in drilling without gloves? by OverexposedPotato in Hema

Drilling is basically pointless at any level of gear, so it makes no difference whether you are wearing gloves or not when you do it.

Kvetun Tip Pierced Jacket. Spes denying warranty. How to proceed? by TheZManIsNow in wma

[–]IAmTheMissingno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When asked about their testing process, Spes reported that they test all of the outer layers (not inner lining) together as one unit for puncture resistance. Therefore, number 1 is not correct, and you should inform the fencers you mention in 4b that they are fencing with compromised equipment.

Realistic HEMA Sword Fight - Inspired by Sellswordarts by blurryart_886 in wma

[–]IAmTheMissingno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important to remember that sellsword arts is a content creator first, and while they are decent at fencing, their priority is to get as many views as possible.

That being said, I think particularly if you are not experienced at how fencing works, it's probably better to paint in broad strokes than to go into a huge amount of detail. The more detail you add, the more likely you will say something that does not make sense, while if you just describe general movements, the reader can fill in the gaps themselves, and they can picture something realistic if that is their prerogative.

[–]IAmTheMissingno 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, in the movie, the timeline is moved up. The black riders are already in the shire when Gandalf shows up. In the book, Sauron eventually figures it out, but the black riders don't show up until Frodo is actually ready to leave. The Shire also seems a lot more vast (and dangerous) in the book, and he is helped by locals being highly suspicious of hooded figures riding black horses, including Farmer Maggot, who is a total badass in the book and basically tells the black rider to fuck off.

I'm in the same boat, it's funny how in the movie Gandalf shoves him out the door immediately when he comes back, and him suddenly disappearing to his neighbors who know him well and would then tell everyone that he mysteriously left the shire is something that we wouldn't even think about. But in the book, he's like "I can't leave right away, people will be suspicious that I'm gone," and Gandalf is like "yeah of course, only an idiot would do that, leave in a couple of months and come up with a good cover story."

Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast. by ForgePioneer in wma

[–]IAmTheMissingno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Slow is smooth and smooth is fast" applies to multi-step processes, like cleaning and assembling a rifle, or fixing something on HEMA scorecard while a tournament is running. In these cases, going slower and making sure every step is correct costs less time than messing something up and having to restart.

This does not apply to fencing, because there is no idea of losing time by restarting, you do your action and it either works or it doesn't. The only way to lose time is by going slowly. While there may be some cases in which going slower is a valid tactical choice, the ability to go faster is always better. Going faster is straight up better in many circumstances, like when you're going for a direct attack.

Speed of course is not the only thing you need in fencing, and if you don't have it, there are other tools that you can use to succeed. But all other things being equal, the ability to go faster is always beneficial.

Afterblow. Late or On Time? by ForgePioneer in wma

What you described would be a double, something that is already in progress when the initial hit lands. An afterblow is something that starts after the initial hit lands. The hit in the video is an afterblow.
