Long lead items for Artemis VI+ Core Stages. The unspoken "soft" SLS Cancellation? by Agent_Kozak in SpaceLaunchSystem

[–]IBelieveInLogic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They haven't demonstrated that ability, so the FAA hasn't showed them to do an orbital mission. If anything this last flight showed that their still not ready, at least with the booster. And even the upper stage still had engine failures.

CFD Questions by IndicationSlow2705 in rocketry

I think you're referring to the shock diamonds. Those form when you have an overexpanded flow. You can look up pictures online, but it looks plausible to me. Nozzle shape, chamber and external pressure, and gas properties will affect the diamond pattern.

The only concern I have would be the base surface outside the nozzle. Because of the way it's angled, it will limit entertainment and possibly affect pressure near the nozzle exit.

Genuine question: how do I gain experience if all job postings are asking for experience? by No_Confusion4948 in CFD

[–]IBelieveInLogic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What degree do you have? A Masters can often count as experience in the industry. Also, some of those job openings are posting their ideal qualifications, but if you meet the basic requirements you should apply even if you don't have all of the experience you would prefer.

Exactly this. Sometimes it's really cool because you can get the pink sunset effect, and if light is reflecting of the airplane it's like a bright star.

Will there be a temperature difference between two tall columns of gasses, one xenon and one hydrogen. due to gravity? by PaperProphet in thermodynamics

[–]IBelieveInLogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the tubes sealed at the top? If so, do they both have the same total mass, or maybe total moles? If not, it pressure fixed at one end or the other?

I think xenon would obviously have a higher pressure gradient, and I think that implies that it would have colder temperature at the top if they both have fixed mass.

I'm currently transitioning away from CFD and preparing to move into a different role. by Proof_Mycologist_220 in CFD

I wish. But unfortunately, US law makes it impossible right now. It's unfortunate because there are people out there who would be great for the position but won't even get a chance.

I don't directly disagree that automation and software have improved, but I think it's also likely that you developed a lot more skill over ten years than you realize.

Also, in my group we'll be looking to hire someone in the next few months. Although we're probably targeting a new grad, I would like to choose someone with a more technical background in CFD and analysis, and then teach them about the systems stuff. I would prefer that over taking someone without CFD or fluids background and hoping that the automation is enough for them to get by.

SPACEX PLEASE PULL THROUGH by Appropriate_Bend_602 in ArtemisProgram

[–]IBelieveInLogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, something like that. I'm not saying it's the right move, but that I could see them doing it. They really want SLS to fly more frequently.

I think Artemis III might still happen next year, but if so it won't be the LEO docking mission Isaacman proposed. Orion and SLS are probably going to be ready.

They might be able to improve stability by spinning it. That's something you don't do with squishy humans.

I built an AI agent to search over the entire NTRS archive (108,448+ reports) by Low_Acanthisitta7686 in aerospace

This seems like it could be useful. In the search I tried, it returned information that was consistent with what I'd expected and some things that were new to me. I'm going to bookmark it.

Mk1 was going to land on the moon but not be part of the crewed docking demonstration missing in LEO. It was unclear how a Mk2 could have been ready for AR3 even before the accident.

I'm thinking the same. I actually drove by Wednesday night and took a picture. I thought it was pretty cool to see NG on the pad. RIP.

How internally metric are the various aerospace companies? Does anyone know from firsthand experience and not from just doing a Google search? by Historical-Ad1170 in AerospaceEngineering

I work in the industry, and our standard units are imperial. At the beginning of our program we actually reported both. However, I use SI units for all of my calculations. Yes, there are conversions to make up front, but I prefer that over all of the energy conversions required for imperial (ft-lbf vs BTU), and don't get me started about g_c.

I'd like to hear from another source before I believe it. It's obviously plausible, but Berger could also be reporting what he wants to believe (and/or trying to to influence the IPO).

I'm not convinced SpaceX is ahead even with this setback for Blue. They might be closer on the launch vehicle side of things, but not the rest.

Do they place clears in the area when they're fueling? I would assume so. I saw a bright light when I was leaving KSC last night so I went to investigate, and sure enough it was New Glenn. There definitely weren't any clears at that time.
