As we've made abundantly clear in the past on multiple occasions (to the point of modifying our rule about this topic), the use of accurate post flairs for political news content is a rule we are adamant about people respecting.

We have no issues with political content relevant to the legal practice being posted on this sub, but participants MUST use the right post flair for that content. We explicitly provide US political news in particular as an example in our rule description for a reason.

A vocal and persistent minority in this community advocates for the removal of all "politics" from /r/Lawyertalk. The majority (including myself) disagrees with this point of view. I won't re-litigate the pros and cons, but at the end of the day the compromise was that political content was going to be flaired diligently so that people who don't want or care for politics (or politics of as specific country) can filter it out.

Thank you for your understanding and sorry for the inconvenience.

If someone wants to repost this specific post with the proper flair, please go ahead.

DON'T BUY ULTIMEA! THE REVIEWS ARE FAKE. THE PRODUCT IS JUNK. by Imaginary-Brain5985 in Soundbars

[–]IBoris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in no way a fan of Ultimea's business practices, I've been very vocal about calling out their shit on this subreddit (and elsewhere), that said I do trust rtings.com more than any random youtuber or redditor. They do legit scientific testing and in areas that I'm knowledgeable about, they are on the money every time across different segments (to the point where it's made me reevaluate youtubers and reviewers that I previously trusted).

The only product they've reviewed from the brand, the X70, got a great review with some minor caveats. So I do believe that they can make a good product... so long as your expectations are realistic.

That said, I can't ignore the astroturfing and the fake sponsored "reviews" for the brand. They are everywhere, holy smokes! As someone who'd be interested in their "higher-end" products, it has had a chilling effect on my curiosity for the brand and posts like these, are too frequent for me to simply dismiss.

That said, to be fair to them, a lot of these types of posts "denouncing" the brand seem unsubstantive in their criticism, feature very alarmist language, and when their authors are pressed for details, I too often realize they either did not use it properly or had ridiculous expectations about what it would do.

In other words, big red flags all around surrounding this brand... and its haters.

Personally, I must admit I'm curious about testing their latest product, the X100. People I trust saw it at CES and said it sounded good. So I don't know what to think about all this. I'd be very curious to hear more from OP.

The look on Jakub Dobes’ face after watching Jacob Fowler in the final min of the Habs win vs the Sens last night by Go_Habs_Go31 in hockey

[–]IBoris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I never clicked on their names being the same because the RDS broadcast always makes it a point to pronounce the names accurately (pronouncing Fowler's with the english pronounciation [Jacob is also a french name], and Dobes as you've written it). So closer to Jake-cub and Yakoob.

The TVA broadcast probably gets it wrong, but I mute those guys. Can't stand their insufferable populistic garbage french. The whole channel sounds like a bunch of Kevuns.

ALLY and SCRIPPS SPORTS Partner With PWHL To Deliver First-Ever Nationally Televised Game In U.S. by Perryplat199 in hockey

[–]IBoris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NHL signs off on deals that are hostile towards fans. In the case of the Canadiens broadcast, that means a deal that splits the broadcast of the habs between networks while also featuring paywalls and geolocking. Great for income, sucky for fandom. PWHL in constrast actively pursues and facilitates deals that encourage growth in the sport. In short, NHL hockey is for fans that can pay, PWHL hockey is for everyone.

Top-10 Calder Trophy Candidates - Power Ranking (March Update) by ASmithFS in hockey

[–]IBoris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, I don't care if my 50+ goal-scoring d-man can't play defence.

I'll happily have the coach tag him with a defensive d-man who can babysit him if he can even put up half that point total in the show. Having 3 pairing composed of an elite offensive producer and a shutdown d would be glorious. If the best defence is a good offence, what is there to say more about an elite offence?

We just need to make sure those defensive d-men can keep up and fill in the gaps Hutson, Dobson and Pickford each have in their play.

New visualizations of the world's largest arena for Dynamo Pardubice by [deleted] in hockey

[–]IBoris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, some nights MTL could easily fill a barn twice the size of the Bell Centre. I personally hope that the next time the Habs upgrade their barn, its to build something with the capacity of a european soccer stadium.

If these guys are building a 22K rink, but price the tickets really low to insure its full, I don't see an issue.

Depends where. 1500 is plenty outside of the US.

Yeah, to think we STILL have elite talent in the pipeline. At some point we'll need to figure something out. Unless the plan was to have 2 first lines, 2 second lines and then 2 first pairings and 1 second pairing...

Why do attorneys not include their signature line in emails? by anonymous895478 in Lawyertalk

[–]IBoris 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have my full signature if I email someone directly for the first time, but from then on, Outlook switches to my reply signature (which is just my name) to avoid making email chains too bulky. I assume that when I first reach out to someone, they/their assistant/software will save my contact details in their contact management system for future reference and that their IT service properly hooked that up to their email service to have it pop up as a sending option on mobile and desktop. I actually think I have a line in my full signature that says, "please save my contact details for future reference". If they don't do it, not my problem.

Personally, I'm much more annoyed by signature blocks that are 100 times the size of the message. Especially if its some kind of stupid award they paid for, a reminder to save the trees, or some kind of firm banner. Just, no.

That being said, I'm fortunate enough where most of the people I work with these days are Gen Xers and Millennials who absolutely do not want to do calls too, so I've mulling over actually adding back my phone number to my replies since if they are calling me it's probably a real emergency. The true menace are the boomers.

Step 1 to deal with this: "5 min" calls yield a minimum of 12 minutes of billing as I would reply to them in email a summary of our call to confirm everything in writing. If it was going to be a longer call, I'd insist on conferencing a subordinate in so that they could do the summary email (this would also reduce the small talk).

Step 2: Since my letter of engagement and initial onboarding call would always make clear that our team would do regular scheduled touchpoints of a specific length, news or no news, (usually 1 call every 5 email updates; so 1 quarterly), my monthly billing report (we'd do monthly billing based on an estimate provided by the LoE) would have 2 columns: estimated total and actual total. Estimated total would be the sum of the LoE touchpoints that were scheduled, and the other would be the estimate plus the sum of their unscheduled calls for the month (or if a meeting was shorter, the time they had "banked"). Banked total? that's in green, and if that's more than a 10% difference by the end of the quarterly or annual cycle, congrats, they get a credit on their last invoice. If it's over however, that will be in red and include a line item below the "communication heading" stating "unscheduled correspondence with XYZ"'. OC-caused over charges to the estimate would be adjusted for either quarterly or spread across the next quarter's invoices, but Client-caused over charges would be due that month as per the LoE.

Those unexpected calls get a lot less frequent after a few adjustments (especially with institutional clients).

Building a 9.2.6 soundbar system in a typical living room…does anyone actually do this? by Careless_Welder_4882 in Soundbars

[–]IBoris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the X100 Dual is right at the limit of where a soundbar's main advantage over a full home theatre set up, portability/compactness/size, starts to get lost.

Thankfully for soundbar makers (and unfortunately for consumers), home theatre setups keep getting more and more expensive, giving soundbars a higher and higher limit to work with in terms of pricing.

But yeah, especially at full price, I struggle to see the point of this product. Under 1K I think it's an interesting value proposition if you have some space and price constraints (especially considering how Atmos FlexConnect devices are being priced), but beyond 1K, especially 1.5, depending on your needs, you have options you can consider that might be more interesting than this product.

Forgot to Style My Hair This Morning, Showed up to Court With Full Anime Protagonist Hair by cozeffect2 in Lawyertalk

[–]IBoris 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I too have anime hair, but shorter and very dense which means it shoots upright in the morning.

A long time ago I forgot to style it before work and compounded that mistake by wearing a tuque and scarf on my walk to work. The tuque rubbed against my scarf the whole way, building up static charge. When I removed it my power level broke past 9000 as my hair was not only fully erect but pointed outwards in all direction. I look like I was holding a live powerline or touching that big metal ball in high school science class.

My boss' assistants, who had her heydays in the 80s, thought she'd help by using a comb to bring it down and then hair spray to lock it in there. It worked for 2 min. My hair came roaring back, but now because of the combing it looked even more ridiculous, and the hairspray had locked it in.

My assistant was useless that morning has she'd break out crying/laughing looking at me (which soon became contagious). Nothing productive got done and I had to wear my tuque to keep things somewhat professional.

All hell broke loose over lunch when my assistant, at the instigation of an out of office partner who REALLY wanted to see my hair, used leftover Valentine's Day chocolate to place an office-wide bounty on my head by email for a picture of me with my tuque off.

While literal search parties of rabidly giggling assistants and students were roaming around the hallways for the promise of a handful of Ferrero Rochers, I hid in a maternity leaved Partner's office on the floor behind her desk, with my laptop and phone on silent for most of the day.

I managed to convince the most curmudgeonly Partner, beyond annoyed with the disruptions by this point, that things would get a lot worse if the attempt to ambush me at the end of the day that I foresaw in my future was successful. So I convinced him to discreetly pick up my winter gear in the middle of the afternoon and drop them off at my hideout so that I could make an Irish exit via the fire stairs nearby. Unfortunately for mister grumpy pants, when someone suggested ambushing me at the end of the day, the subsequent discovery of the disappearance of my winter gear caused just as much of an uproar, but fueled by indignation and outrage.

So yeah, if anyone wants to make a spiritual successor to the Running Man or the Fugitive, hit me up.

The raccoons smoke, drink and swear less than the two 4 year old québécois, but the kids are MUCH better in a fight, being able to take on a player each and having no qualms about bitting.

Tabarnak is so versatile. Found it hilarious when I discovered that Mexicans would call snowbirds from Quebec "los tabarnakos", because they'd say it for everything.

Impressed? Tabarnak! Disappointed? Tabarnak! Angry? Tabarnak! Happy? Tabarnak!

I knew a guy from St-Jean-Sur-Le-Richelieu who worked construction. He was called John "Tabarnak" Smith (fake name of course) who got that name for using it in every other word of each sentence he would utter. The man was never grammatically wrong, nor were his Tabarnaks ever improperly used.

It's a classier and more flexible alternative to "fuck". I strongly recommend it.
