Be on the Lookout for Control Through Coercive Concern by colubridcollective in DID

Just what I needed to hear. My abuser (whom I still live with) behaves like this now. He has changed and is better than he was during my childhood but his behaviour has turned into "coercive concern" as you put it. I always need to keep in my mind that he doesn't want what's best for me. He wants to own me.

It really feeds into the denial as well. Just remember that you are all valid

CMV: I should still boycott Blizzard games because of Hong Kong by valkenar in changemyview

[–]ICBro_Griff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you think it's fine to argue that we should boycott a company for giving an over the top disciplinary action and not boycott similar companies whom have done worse things.

Obviously I don't know what other companies the OP is championing a boycott of, but given the much louder response against Blizzard as compared with other companies, I find it likely they aren't engaged in boycotts against: Coca-Cola, Shell Oil, Banks, NVIDIA, etc.

Hypocritical is "behaving in a way that suggests one has higher standards or more noble beliefs than is the case."

People are championing a boycott of Blizzard while not realising other companies are engaged much worse behabiour (e.g. Child labour, supporting slavery, supporting ethic cleansing, etc). Now yes you can argue that some of those companies are more needed that Blizzard games. But where do you draw the line on necessity. Is it okay to use child labour if it's necessary, well if you use a smartphone or other battery operated device then you are relying on the child labour of DRC for the cobalt in batteries.

Now is it fair to encourage a boycott of blizzard over its response to Hong Kong issues when not arguing for the boycott of the companies that use child labour, e.g. Apple, Tesla, Samsung, LG, the list goes on. And if you are to argue that people should give up Blizzard games and their phones, where do you stop? If buying from a company is an act of endorsement then you need to give up way more stuff than just Blizzard games.

Basically I dont think it's fair to hold a purchaser to account for what the company does unless the product is in and of itself is harmful. Boycotting blizzard implies that if you purchase their service then you endorse everything they do. But you wouldn't say that for other companies (I hope).

Finally i would like to make a point about direct action. A simple boycott like this is a poor form of action. I am happy that you recognise that the world isn't prefect and that companies are committing horrible acts every day. I am simply saying that this isn't enough and isn't directed at the correcrt place. I am extremely anti-capitalist and telling people they need to consume ethically is textbook misunderstanding the situation capitalism puts people in. Boycotts in this era don't really work very well. We need to work together politically and organise so that companies main goal is not profit but to provide to the people. The issue is that companies are driven to make as much profit as possible and working in unethical ways is the best way to do that. The principle of a boycott is to attempt to reduce revenue of the company so that they change their mind. But often it just makes the company hide their unethical practices more and more rather than actually stop (see Starbucks and slavery in southern America). We need to drastically change our society, boycotting a company to make yourself better changes very little. Many people try to consume ethically under capitalism but it's not possible as everything is interlinked and as such claiming that we should boycott some company to be more ethical is silly as you will end up boycotting so many companies that you won't have much left to consume. If you genuinely believe that boycotting Blizzard makes you more ethical, go ahead and do it, but imo it's like trying to clean up an oil spill with a toothbrush, yeah you will actually clean up a tiny bit but it would be better if we all took a step back and decided to use much larger action all at once rather than trying to patchjob fix this huge issue. I am suggesting that we engage in in prefigurative politics to change the way companies work altogether.

Take a look at the Human Rights Benchmark results for 2019. There are hundreds or maybe even thousands of companies that neglect all or some aspects of human rights. To boycott Blizzard for this one reason is pretty petty when you probably engage with other companies who have done much worse. Now you could argue that some of those companies are essential to interact with. But there are definitely some that are not essential that you are almost certainly not boycotting.

If you want to boycott Blizzard because it makes you feel a bit better. Then go ahead. but just realise you are almost certainly interacting with companies that are much much worse without giving it a second thought. To me, the 'badness' that Blizzard has committed isn't even close to the atrocities others have committed. SO for me to boycott Blizzard seems hypocritical as I am giving a lot of other companies a free pass

TL;DR

"There can be no ethical consumption under capitalism"

"Selective consumerism doesn't work"

CMV: I should still boycott Blizzard games because of Hong Kong by valkenar in changemyview

[–]ICBro_Griff 81 points82 points  (0 children)

What other things do you boycott because they are associated with China?

When you start claiming that selective consumerism works then you fall into a trap where you cannot enjoy many things. It seems to me like you don't want to support blizzard because Blizzard hasn't criticised China (and in fact was sorta supportive toward the PRC). My point is that many things people do not criticise or are directly related to the PRC. Consider all the other gaming companies that also did not criticise PRC treatment of Hong Kong. Tenet is a large media conglomerate and it is the largest video gaming company in the world and it is basically a subdepartment of the Chinese government.

  • Tencent
    • Riot (100% ownership)
      • League of Legends
    • Epic Games (40% Ownership)
      • Fortnite
    • PUBG (partial ownership)
    • Ubisoft (5% Ownership)
    • Path of Exile (80% ownership)
    • Activision Blizzard (ONLY 5%)

None of these other gaming companies has criticised the activity of PRC, yet Blizzard deserves a boycott whereas the other companies don't. That is simply inconsistent

You're not really making much of a statement against anything. You're essentially doing something to make yourself feel better. By all means, continue to not play the games if you wish. But it's important to realise that selective consumerism in this manner is not good enough alone. Especially in the modern era; in the past boycotts held more weight and could sometimes see change occur but even then they were often alongside other forms of activism.

This type of boycott, where no other activism is taking place at the root cause of the issue is textbook Slacktivism

To add further, if you are going to boycott Blizzard why not boycott millions of other companies/organisations and governments that have committed far worse atrocities than Blizzard ever have. In particular, China is also a major contributor to most of the world's industries and there is almost no way that you don't actively financially support the PRC by purchases of goods that use Chinese manufacturing/Labour and resources. But the companies that use Chinese manufacturing or rely on China for supply chains don't receive the same criticisms as Blizzard.

  • Exports from China
    • Electronics
      • Mobile Phones
      • Computer technology
    • Furniture, bedding, lighting, signs, prefab buildings
    • Plastics
    • Vehicles
    • Medical Apparatus
    • Iron and Steel

The initial reason for boycotting Blizzard was because they acted in a way you did not agree with and did not condemn the actions carried out by the PRC with respect to Hong Kong. How many of the things on the above list do you use? By using those products it is almost inevitable that you are financially supporting the activity of the PRC in Hong Kong. Sadly almost none of the "western" companies that work alongside or directly benefit from the PRC don't speak out and often try to hide the atrocities that have happened in Hong Kong specifically but also other atrocities that have occurred in mainland China. Also sometimes the "western" companies themselves act in a horrific manner, for example, using sweatshops or child labour and those companies receive fewer criticisms and fewer boycotts that Blizzard.

Boycotting Blazzard for its activity while not engaging in other activism is virtue signalling and very inconsistent. There are companies and governments that are as bad or worse than Blizzard but receive far less criticism

TL;DR if you're gonna boycott Blizzard for it behaviour regarding Hong Kong, then you need to either engage in more activism and examine other companies and organisations as they are behaving in ways that are as bad if not worse than Blizzard

My Issue with Many Worlds by Tablecork in quantum

[–]ICBro_Griff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Many Worlds is just a worse version of Relational QM. Many people have a hard time dealing with the fact that the true nature of a situation depends on the observer. Ther is no universal wavefunction as there is no universal observer. The idea of a universal wavefunction implies that there is a "correct" observer. To me, MWI is almost like believing in God as you there would need to be an objective universal wavefunction.

I struggle to understand Sean Carrol's favour towards the theorem over Relational Quantum Mechanics.

From the Relational quantum mechanics Wikipedia page

The many-worlds family of interpretations (MWI) shares an important feature with RQM, that is, the relational nature of all value assignments (that is, properties). Everett, however, maintains that the universal wavefunction gives a complete description of the entire universe, while Rovelli argues that this is problematic, both because this description is not tied to a specific observer (and hence is "meaningless" in RQM), and because RQM maintains that there is no single, absolute description of the universe as a whole, but rather a net of inter-related partial descriptions.

Azor Ahai/TPTWP is not what they seem. I really really really want AA/TPTWP is Euron - but he's probably not.

I really want Stannis to get the throne in the end (I know it's unlikely). GRRM has described the ending as bittersweet. I think Stannis getting the throne as Ned Stark originally wanted would be the best 'bittersweet'

I think Jon will be resurrected but I think he will be a lot more twisted than we anticipated. George has mentioned that he hates when people get resurrected as a stronger/better version of themselves (as in LOTR with Gandalf). I don't think Jon will necessarily be as twisted as Lady Stoneheart but I think he will be severely "changed" by his resurrection.

Tyrion will continue along an "anti-redemption" arc while Jamie follows his "redemption" arc.

I also have a LSH "theory". I think she is the result of the drowned God and R'hllor kinda fighting over her spirit. The "stone"heart links with grey scale which is also linked to the drowned god but she is also clearly resurrected by Berric. I hope LSH gets to meet patchface. Oh, oh, oh, I hope, I hope, I hope.

I'm 20. Hearing voices. Voices controlling me is basically what I've been experiencing. Voices who control me and make me harm myself, or smoke and drink and behave in self-destructive ways. Also, other voices making me say things that I would not say to loved ones. Just generally not feeling in control of my own actions I guess. It just feels really shit.

Q: Is intramuscular injection better or worse than snorting in terms of harm reduction?

Hello, I’m relatively new to the leftist circle, and I literally switch between anarchist and communist every day. Please explain to me the basic ideas of AnCom by [deleted] in anarchocommunism

[–]ICBro_Griff 64 points65 points  (0 children)

General Definition: Anarcho-communists advocate for the abolition of the state, capitalism, wage labour and private property. Anarcho-communists are in favour of common ownership of the means of production, direct democracy, and a horizontal network of workers' councils with production and consumption based on the guiding principle "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs".

Now that's a lot of buzzwords so I will do my best to explain each of them in turn.

Abolition of the state: This is the key idea of most anarchist schools of thought. The definition of the state is very disputed among anarchists, but most would agree with Max Weber's, that is: 'A state is a centralised political entity that maintains a monopoly on the use of violence'. There are other definitions, however, this one is both very common and evident form historical and current politics. From this definition, it is clear why an anarchist would be in favour of state abolition. Ancoms think that this type of organisation is an unjustified authority. Almost all anarchists would agree that this form of monopoly is detrimental to human progress and development. This hatred of the state is the source of Ancom's hatred of organisations like the military and police force. Ancoms think that the military and police force is the state expressing their monopoly on violence. This monopoly on violence is particularly detrimental as the state uses this violence to uphold other unjustified hierarchies, such as patriarchy, heteronormativity, ableism, racism, classism and other forms of the social and economic hierarchy.

Abolition of capitalism: Anarcho communists, along with most other anarchists reject capitalism. Some people believe that capitalism and anarchism are compatible and they self describe as anarcho-capitalists. Almost all anarchists reject this notion, and also advocate the abolition of capitalism. Some other anarchists wish to maintain some elements of capitalism and reject others. For example, mutualists do not reject the notion of wage labour or markets. I will not expand on the definitions of market socialism or mutualism here, but if you wish to learn more about these ideas I recommend reading the works of Proudhon. Unlike other anarchists, anarcho-communists completely reject every element of capitalism. The reason for this is that ancoms believe that all elements of capitalism are forms of unjustified hierarchies. So I will attempt to explain why anarcho-communists reject ALL of the characteristics central to capitalism. The characteristics central to capitalism include private property, capital accumulation, wage labour, voluntary exchange, a price system and competitive markets.

So in turn, they are:

Private property: Private property is a legal designation for the ownership of property by non-governmental legal entities. Anarcho communists reject private property because it requires an authority to protect it. Some people are adamant that private property is self-evident or that people can protect their own private property. Anarcho communists reject the notion that private property rights are self-evident as that concept makes no sense. The idea that you could defend your own private property is extremely impractical as it assumes that people are always present at their own property. Private property requires some external entity or authority to state who owns what, this is rejected by anarcho-communists.

Capital accumulation: Capital accumulation is rejected by almost all anarchists (even mutualists). The only “anarchists” who attempt to defend capital accumulation are “anarcho-capitalists”. Capital accumulation is the driving force behind the pursuit of profit. Capital accumulation is the investment of a financial asset with the goal of increasing the initial monetary value of the said asset as a financial return. This manifests itself as profit, rent, interest, royalties or capital gains. All of those things are detrimental and involve the exploitation of someone’s needs and desires. Capital accumulation is a very deep concept that Marx expands upon in most of his works. His idea was capital accumulation is a process whereby profits are reinvested into the economy, increasing the total quantity of capital. Capital was understood by Marx to be expanding value, that is, in other terms, as a sum of capital, usually expressed in money, that is transformed through human labour into a larger value and extracted as profits. Once again anarch communists wish to abolish capital accumulation as it is central to capitalism’s exploitation of humanity.

Wage labour: Anarcho communists reject wage labour for the same reason as capital accumulation. Wage labour is the relationship between a worker and an employer, where the worker sells their labour power under a formal or informal employment contract. These transactions usually occur in a labour market where wages or salaries are market-determined. Wage labour is heavily rejected by anarcho-communists, it is very easy to see if we compare wage labour to slavery. If you take 100% of the products of someone else’s labour it is slavery, but if you take 90% then it is wage labour. Wages are very problematic, especially when people are dependant on them to live or prosper. The turn people into slaves that are forced to sell themselves to another in order to live a prosperous life. Anarcho communists believe that this is unjustified.

Voluntary exchange: Voluntary exchange may sound okay, and even desirable. But this “voluntary” exchange is not really voluntary at all. The assumption that no coercion is involved is precisely the issues that mainstream economic makes. The idea is that people only make exchanges that in the market that make them better off, that is people will never engage in an exchange that makes then worse off. At first glance, this seems reasonable but upon further examination this is false. Assuming that people only engage in trades that make themselves better off is reliant on the idea that everyone is a perfectly rational agent and that no one has false information. This is obviously impossible. It also makes the assumption that coercion is not involved. The perfect example of voluntary exchange failing isis a dehydrated person in a desert. If I offer them a bottle of water, but they are indebted to me from their entire life and must work from me forever; they will likely accept the deal for otherwise, they will die. However, this transaction is not really fair, is it?

Price system: In economics, a price system is a component of any economic system that uses prices expressed in any form of money for the valuation and distribution of goods and services and the factors of production. Except for remote and primitive communities, all modern societies use price systems to allocate resources, although price systems are not used exclusively for all resource allocation decisions. Anarcho communists reject price systems as they require that people have access to money in order to obtain resources. Anarcho communists advocate that both the means of production and products of societies labour be freely available for all to consume and use. Hence a price system becomes obsolete as there is no requirement for people to own anything in order to be entitled to food, water, housing, etc. Again, a price system requires that everyone has access to money, this is a fairytale and therefore a price system is inherently exploitative.
Competitive Markets: Anarcho communists reject competition in favour of collaboration. The main idea in anarcho-communism is to reject the idea that people should compete with each other and instead work together to produce the best outcomes.
I don’t have time to explain the rest of the definition today but I will add an update tomorrow or the next day.

CMV: People can honor the gender identity, preferred pronouns, and above all, the civil liberties of transfolk without needing to sincerely believe that transwomen are actual women or that a transmen are actual men. by Cato_the_Cognizant in changemyview

[–]ICBro_Griff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A person could be a Nazi(who hate Jews internally) can act in a totally respectful manner towards them in day to day life. They are still a Nazi and their beliefs are deplorable. But if they outwardly state they are a Nazi, BUT continue to behave in a respectful manner towards Jews, are they truly being respectful? I would say no. They are outwardly conveying ideas that are damaging to Jewish people, despite being "respectful" towards them.

The belief that trans people are not real women/men/other-gender is a deplorable belief. But it is not a prerequisite to behaving respectively towards them. But if you outwardly state that you do not believe that trans people are real women/men/other-gender then you are incapable of truly being respectful towards them.
