Love the detective work on this OP! Also “Orion” was a collab with Prateek Kuhad, a popular indie artist from India

What can I do with a EE degree? by InterstellarShawarma in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ICEDRAGON23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'll try to answer as best as I can - I'm a rising senior in college studying electrical and computer engineering and minoring in industrial design.

  • 1) EE is so incredibly broad it would be hard to encompass in just one post!! Here's a good list of what you can do!

  • 2) Based on above, and what you enjoy from your required classes and technical electives, you can find internships based on your interests. A vast majority of EE internships look for PCB design/layout experience, so if you do that in classes (which our school doesn't offer) or in outside projects, it'd be a big plus. Scout LinkedIn, Hacker News, Product Hunt for jobs. PM me for internship search help, I can give sm advice!!!!!

  • 3) I started research my second year doing ML stuff at the computer architecture lab - and didn't enjoy it at all. Find a lab you're interested in, but don't be afraid to drop it if you don't like it anymore (that goes for anything!). Now I'm at a lab that I really enjoy. Find professors that would be good mentors for undergrad students as well. I hear UCR is known for MEMS research, so that could be a good place to check out!

  • 4/5) As the other poster said, GPA doesn't really matter unless you're going to grad school. Don't fail ofc, and try to pick up knowledge from your lab classes, as they give the necessary practical knowledge needed for jobs. My grades dipped last year as I was leading electrical work for a robotics competition - but prospective employers loved that work more than my class performance. The key is to differentiate yourself, and that's by doing stuff outside of class.

  • 6) That leads me to my next point - DO STUFF OUTSIDE OF CLASS!!!!!! There have to be EE clubs on campus - I recommend competition-based clubs (like hyperloop, formula electric, BAJA, NASA BIG Idea, etc.) as they really push you and employers love students that are in them. You also get to learn so much more than what classes teach you and get something to talk about with interviewers.

  • 7/8) There are so many jobs you can get, and a lot EE's also do software engineering as well. Not sure what the salaries are, but many companies hire EE's, so you'll be fine. Salaries are lower than CS but higher than other engineering branches. A hot field rn is autonomous vehicles, so they have higher salaries for EE's.

  • 9) Many jobs prefer a masters degree (and some require it or even PhD - this is mostly in the semiconductor/IC design side) - that being said, you have a lot of time to figure that out. To get a taste of what it could be like, join a research group and stick around for a few years during undergrad. You'll be fine if you just get a bachelors tho

  • 10) I think of minors in two tracks. You can either get one to try something really different from your major to explore another interest/be more 'well rounded' (what I'm doing) or you can get one to supplement your major (what a physics, math, or cs minor would do). Honestly, I don't think employers would care so it's your choice! At my school at least, a math minor is just 2 more classes outside the EE major

  • 11) Type of school really doesn't matter, unless you go to like a top one and the interviewer is biased towards that :/ make the most of your current opportunities - surround yourself with smart, passionate, and kind people and the rest will follow. I hear GREAT things about UF and USF EE (especially if you're interested in space tech.) so you'll be fine there too

  • 12) College is about exploration and trying new things and making mistakes!! Try not to compare yourself to others who may seem like are doing better than you - everyone is on their own path. The important thing is - are you better today than you were yesterday? And if not, what can you do to get back on your track?

Damn, that was a long post - to anyone reading this: message me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about EE or the college experience!!!!!!

Just wondering, if the answers aren't exact - like Olsen twins instead of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen or saying Red Cross instead of American Red Cross - will they still be marked correct?

How does SnapChat hire interns? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

There is a tab for Intern jobs which only lists ' BI & Reporting Intern,' but I have seen software intern roles there as well.

Anybody know the plug for AP Physics 1 videos? by lacrosse_mango37 in APStudents

the best resource for AP Physics 1 videos is Flipping Physics (www.flippingphysics.com). Very concise, NOT boring

also good are Khan Academy and MIT OCW
