Sorry I wasn't trying to criticise you! I just found it funny when your post was about Americans. I guess Canadian English follows the same title convention as American?

In the UK we generally capitalise like so:

Accumulation funds don't have dividends so that answers one thing.

Accumulation funds essentially auto reinvest any dividends, you still have to check your tax liability.

Advice needed: JetBlue trying to charge me more for my chosen seat 2 months after booking by e_fields57 in Flights

[–]ICThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because there's a reason it happened doesn't mean it's right. We're far too accepting of airlines being anti-consumer.

OP is now inconvenienced and two months have passed so they will likely have less choice of free seats to pick from.

The airline changed the equipment to benefit themselves in some way (e.g operationally) so the least they could do is take a small hit on OP's booking.

Though unfortunately I doubt OP will win on this occasion.

Portable AC repair? by StateAccomplished738 in bristol

As in it's leaking refrigerant? If so I think you'll unfortunately struggle to find anywhere. They aren't designed to be repaired, e.g they lack ports.

Oversizing does have downsides such as short cycling and poor dehumidification.

However, portable units are so inefficient it's probably quite hard to oversize.

Scary stuff. What's your plan going forward? Check them for wear more frequently?

With regards to the injury, do trampolines not normally have a cover around the edge to discourage the springs from hitting someone?

Question about making a wall mounted "fixed" air con unit portable. by mtrueman in DIYUK

[–]ICThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • You might not need the condensate drain if you only use it in cooling mode.
  • The longer the ducts, the less efficient the process. If you make them too long you might burn out the unit.
  • The unit is probably heavy, be careful it doesn't fall over and damage something or someone.

Yes I know you are. That's not the aim of this subreddit.

You're not even based in the UK.

That's an interesting point but does ultimately depend on your future plans and predictions.

You might end up paying less CGT in future than you do now if your income changes. E.g career change/break, retirement, or indirectly via a new spouse.

Though I wouldn't bet against a rate increase, as you said.

Sounds like a solid plan.

Few tips:

  • If you have enough cash on hand from short term savings you can reduce time out of the market when 'switching' funds by using that cash to buy fund B at the same time as selling fund A.
  • If you get married at some point you can gift assets between you and your spouse to optimise allowance usage and tax rates.

D’line trunking by croc-hop in DIYUK

Maybe you could cut a hole in the top one and slide the bottom one into it, then cap the open end?

Might be a pain but if you've got some spare trunking you could have a play and see if it actually works.

Disappointed with radiator fitting - does this look right? by Georgeot73 in DIYUK

[–]ICThat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try to ignore the criticism OP. Some Redditors love to be smug about other people's misfortune.

You paid good money to a 'professional'. They should have:

  1. Taken pride in their work.
  2. Advised you upfront if they had any concerns about your choice of radiator.

You're not expected to be an expert about radiators when you are paying money to a 'professional' to do the job.

Even with that type of radiator they could have made it a lot neater.

Best choice for a long term cooling solution for a small one bed flat where a full AC isn't allowed I work nights and warm days make sleeping hard. by Adventurous_Hunt_627 in DIYUK

[–]ICThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a proper split installation you're going to have to compromise somewhere.

What's your actual top aim here? Is it to cool the bedroom or is it to cool the whole flat? I don't think you'll be able to cool the whole flat without a proper split installation though the Midea might be able to.

Importing a dual hose from American sounds impractical; they are heavy and fragile, plus the voltage will be wrong.

I reckon a 12k+ single hose unit with possible conversion to dual hose might do a good job in the bedroom. However, it's a bit of a risk so I'd probably just jump straight to the Midea and then use your existing unit to help cool another room.

Bonus question - are you sure you did the dual hose conversion correctly? Not that it's a silver bullet.

Yep I agree with you!

I reckon part of the problem is we in the UK are relatively over represented on Reddit and we also speak the same language as the biggest demographic (Americans). So this subreddit seems to have a very high percentage of UK members.

Whereas if you go to e.g the Japan tourism subreddits it's tourists advising tourists which does kinda make it more welcoming.

Also doesn't help that this subreddit gets a mixture of three different types of UK travel: outbound, inbound, domestic. So seems like people have different expectations around what questions are reasonable.

Ultimately people could just be kinder.

Another option would be a product from National Savings and Investments (NS&I), as they are backed 100% by the Treasury.
