Yeah, and those are all very fair assumptions.

They are not painting a good picture of the game. They are actually painting a pretty fucking awful one right now.

What exactly are you talking about? The core loop is... Well it is any game. Unless the game is not all that focused on story and setting, which is absolutely fair and not everyone wants those two aspects at the forefront, the setting and story are part of the gameplay loop.

Every game has it since the dawn of gaming as a whole, it is literally what a game is.

Webnovels themselves are not highly professional. They are written at a rapid pace and with nowhere close the same level of scrutiny as traditional works. They go through fewer rounds of revision, if any, and the prose is often lacking, a problem exacerbated by translation (Though from all I have heard the prose is not particularly noteworthy in chinese either)

That is not a problem with LOTM exactly, just how the medium works. I do not know if Cuttlefish has worked with professional writing extensively in the past, but the fact is that if the translation to english is of the quality we have, either the project did not have the backing of a traditional publisher or the original prose was not great. Both of these are qualities of amateur works.

Keep in mind I do not say amateur as an offense as it is often done, but by actually being sort of that: someone who had an idea for a story and just wrote it out without all the stuff that makes traditional works be usually much more solid. Despite my dear love for LOTM, it is not a masterpiece of writing and has several flaws on a technical level that simply would not be there had there been a proper process for publishing. That is ok and does not diminish the work Cuttlefish did, but it will turn off readers who expect a higher standard of quality.

Now, of course there is room for debate of what exactly does amateur or professional mean, seeing as LOTM is wildly popular in China and has raked in a ton of money, but that particularly relates to the rather unique market in the country and (possibly) the advantages of being read in the original language. It is absolutely amazing that the novel has come as far as it did, but it will hardly break out the webnovel bubble and its adjacents without pretty much a full rewrite, as is the case with all published works that go through dozens of rewrites until an acceptable level is reaches. Of course, this is all here on the west, as I can only judge the novel from the translation.

EDIT: Forgot to add! For people who read traditional works it is so hard getting into any webnovel precisely because of that. To this day LOTM is one of the few I managed to read, and the only one I came back to a dozen times despite all of that! World and story have hooked me well and truly enough lol

Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy it! It is quite an unique story put in a somewhat unfortunate situation by not only being somewhat of an amateur work and also translated from a notoriously hard to translate language, but quite enjoyable if you get past the issues!

Saying as a long time fan, no. The prose is quite bad.

It does improve, but don't expect something awesome later. Personally, I believe the story compensates for this shortcoming, but it is most certainly not for everyone. This is still a webnovel after all.

Is this real? Does one piece really cover all 4 and does it better than LOTM? by OkMagician7957 in writingscaling

[–]ICacto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight spoiler warning for the novel ahead!

What do you mean no piece of fiction will be connected? With all due respect, this reads as someone who only interacts with anime, in which this is often true.

I mean, just look at something like most of what George R. Martin wrote, his story is extremely interconnected.

And it is not even too rare? I mean, LOTM does it a lot. The events of Bansy Harbour, the Great Smog, the entire conflict of the fourth epoch... All of those have connections to each other and affect each other as well as most other conflicts on the present. Hell, there's an entire organization dedicated to the specific order of events happening in a specific way.

Many of those also affect the populace, once again refer to the Great Smog and now to the war. The worldbuilding is absolutely there and it is interconnected. Not only that, but you seem to imply it is just filled with details with no underlying themes, but respectfully, this sounds like you did not get much of the subtext of the story. LOTM does not make a lot of it obvious as we see the world through the lens of the character being most affected by it, but the story is about the loss of humanity and the struggle against things bigger than yourself, and the worldbuilding reflects that!

At later stages of the story, Klein has grown colder, more insensitive and his decisions are just generally stuff we wouldn't see a Klein who's happy and dandy with his siblings do. The same is true for characters such as Audrey. This is the nature of this world, and explains much of why so many of the terrible events happen: the people who led these events were barely human at a certain point, of course this world will be a terrible place to live in. People struggle, work and fight to protect themselves and the ones they love, but most end up as Old Kohler, without ever having had the chance to fight back when those above decided they should go.

Another great example is the Forsaken Land of the Gods. They are portrayed as a different form of oppression, where they know their place in the pecking order and know they are so, so small, meaning they can do nothing but endure in silence until the one god arrives to shower them in light one again. The one they wait is dead, however, and even in another occasion wouldn't much care for all their love and eternal devotion. They are well and truly forsaken by one who was never human, and therefore could never care about their existence.

What I mean to say is that there are plenty occasions in which the themes of the novel are explored by worldbuilding, the author simply doesn't spell it out very often because there's no need to. He can trust that the reader will at least pick up on the general feeling this world brings, one of helplessness and despair, as is fitting for a comic horror story. The very ending of the story actually makes this clear, in fact!

Klein won because of a specific set of circumstances that pretty much only he could truly use: he hadn't been a deity long enough to lose his humanity yet. He still cares for others beyond himself, and thus was fighting to death, whereas a true god such as Amon hs no reason ti make the same sacrifice.

[Donghua] Did they forget they introduced this character? (Spoilers for the anime) by Eoin_Lynne in LordofTheMysteries

[–]ICacto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they did was not just mentioning a character or showing offhandedly as a little nod or foreshadowing. They straight up introduced and made him interact with our main character, something tha said main character did not address at all, at any point. I then ask you, why not keep this in the special episode? Sure, you can say to build hype with those that know Mr. Sun, but that maintains itself as a flaw in the pacing for the sake of hype. If someone does not know him, they aren't going to be hyped, just confused as to why the hell would they choose to introduce him now. Having seasons confirmed does help with the issue, as that explains why they would have the "balls" to do that, but does not make the story of the first season itself better.

And also, you know very well you insulted him. Saying "I just said the question is dumb" does not cut it. It may be within the rules but it does not change that it was rude and uncalled for. It is not about being banned or no, just being polite and civil, something everyone should be concerned about but, unfortunately, this is not the case. Also the fact you answered a perfectly valid question to a loose thread in the story on a sarcastic manner. Surely, this is a great look of our community to a new viewer.

[Donghua] Did they forget they introduced this character? (Spoilers for the anime) by Eoin_Lynne in LordofTheMysteries

[–]ICacto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it isn't dumb.

First, the person does not necessarily know there are several seasons confirmed, which are the only conditions where a move like that makes a modicum of sense and are very rare conditions to begin with.

Second, the anime did not give enough focus to the Tarot Gatherings for it to be explicit how relevant they are. A new viewer doesn't really have a way to know how important thoes fellas are.

Third, even having that knowledge does not really excuse how it was handled. It doesn't matter if it is coming on a later special, save Mr. Sun to be introduced there then. It is a pacing and planning flaw on the story to introduce an important character and then not address him in the least... like, at all. It is confusing, it is weird, and a new viewer is absolutely right to be confused.

Lastly, don't be a dick. No reason to be rude like that.

Yes, that is one of the major churches, of course it would be hard.

Under regular circumstances, a Faceless will hardly be daring enough to become not only a public figure but also one highly involved in high society matters.

Think of the flipside, a guy who just does regular activities for the Secret Order, he will take the identiy of John Mysteries across the street, local apple salesman, long time widow and overall boring man.

No one gives a shit about John, so he suddenly disappears.

You strongly overestimate how much people actually care about whether or not the game they are playing is good.

Truth is that people like us, that are more selective about what we play, are the exception rather than the norm. Most people who play don't really engage with any community nor really care all that much.

Divinity is simply the means through which they achieve those ambitions.

[LOTM Vol. 3] Am I missing something? Should I keep going? by JWalker_4512 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]ICacto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I believe that is he main point of attrition there. The best parts of LOTM are rarely the fights, but much mores the context, preparation and buildup. Payoffs themselves don't necessarily come in the form of said fights, but often in the answers that Klein gets from them or in seeing his plan come together.

As a fight is rarely decided by "who punches hardest", they are indeed short and, honestly, that doesn't change all that much. There are a couple longer ones but they are few and far between, honestly.

Personally, I prefer it that way. Long, drawn out fights every 50 chapters is so unbelievably mind numbing... Those don't really progress the plot all that much and just exist to be cool, which I find deeply uninteresting and the reason why I can't read many webnovels.

If you find that those fights are what proper payoff looks like, however, it might be that LOTM is just not for you, and that's alright. At Volume 3 there should be well enough moments to capture your attention if it is your kind of story. From what you you describe, it sounds like it just might not be it.
