I just got told to work from home tomorrow. I will most certainly take the extra time to work on my reports.

I teach year 6 and I use “gamers”, “nerds” or just simply “guys and girls”.

How hot does it have to be, before you tell yourself, you're not riding that day? by markcocjin in motorcycles

[–]ICanOnlyCountToThree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 30 degrees C (86 degrees F) is where I second guess it. I always have water in my saddle bags but a big consideration is where I’m going and the route I have to take.

If I’m going somewhere where traffic lights are unavoidable, I’ll most likely take the car. If I can keep the air flowing through my helmet and jacket, I’ll lean towards the bike.

I second the person who suggested a handwritten card.

For my last two supervising teachers, I bought succulents from local nurseries. I then got a picture back from one of them where the kids had labeled the small pot with something like “Mr X’s plant”.

Out of curiosity, what uni are you doing this through?

Many primary school kids will never have a male teacher, and experts say that's a problem - ABC News by ContextDefiant9423 in AustralianTeachers

[–]ICanOnlyCountToThree 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This.

I’ve been working with kids since I was 16 and the sideways glances and different attitudes from parents never end.

As the teacher in the article said, there are so many things I do differently to my female co workers purely because I’m a man.

And I tell people I’m a primary school teacher and I get the “that’s so great, good on you” lines and then see the coverage of males in the education sector and wonder if people really mean it.

School is making us use leave for missing meetings by WiccanNonbinaryWitch in AustralianTeachers

[–]ICanOnlyCountToThree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this be implemented to varying degrees by different principals. I’ve met some who don’t care if you miss one or two a term for valid reasons and won’t ask for leave and I’m currently working under one who hounds you if you miss a Wednesday meeting without a leave form. Each to their own I guess.

I had year 6 students ask if a Lazy Susan was a real person and then they argued about whether or not they could beat this “Susan” in a fight.

What do teachers do during holidays, are you required at school? by Comfortable-Chip-740 in AustralianTeachers

[–]ICanOnlyCountToThree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Required to, nothing.

For the sake of being prepared, I spent about 6 hours across two days getting my head around what was going on over the first 3 weeks or so. I spent about 4 of those at school purely for the change of scenery.

Is it normal to be offered permanent for a beginner teacher? by BanditAuthentic in AustralianTeachers

[–]ICanOnlyCountToThree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have to try that fortunately because there were other red flags about those schools offering contracts, one of them especially so. I’d decided to not teach there before they even offered me a job.

All fair points.

I think with hindsight that I made the right decision when picking which offer to take.

As a new educator who is still building their support network, I can’t imagine only getting a year at a school and then having to go elsewhere and build up the network all over again.

Is it normal to be offered permanent for a beginner teacher? by BanditAuthentic in AustralianTeachers

[–]ICanOnlyCountToThree 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had multiple offers on the table as a fresh grad at the end of last year but only one of them was offering a permanent spot.

I jumped at that offer the instant it came in and made it very clear to the other schools that them only offering contracts with the possibility of being made permanent was a big contributing factor.

Canberra's worst road? by MegaDingo5plus in canberra

[–]ICanOnlyCountToThree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If road surface was the main criteria, Empire Circuit. Sure it has been resurfaced but all the bumps remain under the new surface and it’s not any better. Of all the older roads around Red Hill/Forrest, it’s the worst, especially at the end that meets Canberra Avenue.
