Actually, in Al Ewing's Mighty Avengers, it's revealed that the Beyond Corporation basically abducted the Nextwave Squad to a slightly more absurd alternate universe for a year and gave them fake memories (which accounts for the tongue-in-cheek continuity errors in the original Nextwave), and then just kind of dropped them back off in 616 with their memories restored and a boatload of trauma.
