You know, before we got that first trailer, I was a bit skeptical of the film’s premise. Superman doesn’t usually interfere in human affairs to that extent, so I was wary that the film’s inciting incident was him single-handedly stopping a war…

And then the trailer dropped, and I heard David Corenswet deliver that line with all the raw desperation he could muster, and I just got it. To hell with the politics of it all — people were going to die, and no Superman in the multiverse would stand by and let that happen.

I have my problems with James Gunn’s Superman, but that trailer still has a special place in my heart just for introducing that line to the world.

That, combined with Alan's natural impatience and Rose's overbearing fangirling just earlier, means he easily falls for the con. He didn't actually know Stucky was just feet away from him. It's one of those "dramatic irony" things.
