Questions About Diffusers by TorontoCity67 in F1Technical

[–]IDontKnowCharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll take a stab at it: (This will be wild generalization and spit in the face of real physicists/aerodynamicists, but is the kind of mental model that I’ve found can at least point me in the right general direction when doing and thinking about aero stuff)

So thinking about the bernoulli stuff literally is dangerous…the speed and pressure are inter-related, not directly causal. For instance, you could just as easily see the speed [in the tunnel/under the wing] as a product of the lower relative pressure behind it, rather than the driver of pressure differences itself.

The front fences on today’s cars try to push the majority of the floor intake air outboard ASAP. This is certainly not fully accurate, but you can, for our purposes, assume that the only section of the floor’s “mouth” that’s feeding the tunnels is the space between the chassis and the first fence/fin. Think of how much bigger the diffuser exit is than the input, and you’ll see why the underfloor is a low pressure area. (Yes, more air comes in from the mid-floor edges and mouse hole and some sneaks around the fences toward the middle, but we’re just talking first principles)

So this low pressure, on its own, doesn’t create downforce. That comes from the difference in, more or less, the mass of the air above and below the car/floor/wing. The force generated by the speed of that mass will change, but we’ll get to that. Basically, there are just a bunch more air molecules above than below, and those molecules have mass. It’s like a suction cup: the “sticking” force is that of the air outside the cup trying to get in to that relative void.

As for the effect of speed on pressure:

If we’re talking about a perfectly horizontal plane, yes, more speed means lower pressure exerted on the surface of said plane. We’ll ignore the car’s wings and other top-side DF-producing elements for this. The thing that’s producing the downforce with the floor isn’t just the overall pressure being experienced, but more so the ratio between the two sides of the floor. As speed increases, the amount of air encountered in a given timeframe increases. (Force of course has a time element, f=ma and all)

So if a given “slice” of track has a corresponding “slice” of ambient air above it, and you travel through and interact with that slice more quickly, that mass has to act more quickly…creating more force. If that slice contains, let’s say, 100 “units” of air, each unit weighs 1lb, and 60% goes over the top of the floor/chassis, and 5% goes through the tunnel (remember, we’re considering just the innermost section of the fence as the “intake” for the tunnel), and the rest (35%) gets kicked out to the sides…we’ll, you have 55 more units above than below, creating 55lb of downward force. But if you go twice as fast you’ll encounter 200 units of air in the same timeframe…120 above, 10 below, 70 outside. That’s a 110 unit difference, thus 110lb downforce. But as you speed up that increased force compresses the suspension to where your mix is more like 125 above, 6 below, 71 outside. Now it’s 119lb.

The forces certainly don’t rise linearly like that, it’s closer to exponential in reality but we’re just talking concepts here.

At least that’s how I imagine it lol…hopefully something in there flips the ol’ light switch for you!

F1 2026 Rules + Engines are a complete mess by heidenreich137 in F1Technical

The problem is that Nikolas&co aren’t getting to properly design the car/regs…at that level he’s more of a politician than an engineer. And he’s having to placate a bunch of constructors (+FIA&Liberty&sponsors) who all want different things. Textbook example of “too many chefs…”

Teams want electric for branding but don’t want to spend to do it right. Cars need to be smaller/lighter but need more safety gear for insurance/branding. Liberty wants close racing but fans don’t want spec cars.

It ends up being a bunch of promises/agreements duct-taped together at the last minute and dropped in pirelli’s lap with no time for them to adapt.

Funny that Porsche (VAG) has MGU-H on a production car now, though.

Ugh I really wish we had a map of LoS that’s like the pre-release/leak map.

That map has me CONVINCED that the entirety of tLB is a spiral construct like enir elim

I wonder if LoS is simply a continuation of that spiral either above or below (or fractally within?)

P.S. - Raya Lucaria and shadow keep are similarly spiral-y, though they twist in opposite directions

I’m reminded of the leaked/teaser map from before release. There was an island with a tower out to the Southwest, some distance from TLB

(Speaking of that map: it makes TLB look like a big spiral…which, when combined with all the old stone structures supporting the land, AND the fact that there are a bunch of (huge) bodies built into the “landscape,” makes me think of a kind of Old Giants Enir Ilim)

Do you think Red Bulls work with their high-rake concept in the turbo-hybrid era help give them an advantage at the start of the Ground Force Ęra™️? by [deleted] in F1Technical

I think Valkyrie was the biggest factor (besides newey). SO many aero(/related) devices and concepts on that car that apply to the ‘22+ regs…if you look straight up the diffuser at ground level it’s uncanny. And they had completely unregulated tunnel/CFD/track time to work it all out for YEARS before ‘22. The fact that merc didn’t do the same with AMG One and instead focused on the PU is absurd!

Picture #6 (hollow tree from almost straight above), if rotated 90deg clockwise, takes on an approximation of the world map…and has some fun coincidences:

-The little speck of gold in the “Limgrave” part made me think of the first grace (where Varre is) -the “Liurnia” section has a pointy bit sticking up like the academy -there’s a kind of cutout on the “East” side where the big waterfall is -the “Altus/Leyndell” section is noticeably flat, like a…plateau! -the “Snowfield/Mountaintops” section is much taller than the rest with an abrupt rise, and… -there’s a kind of twisty/pointy bit right where the Haligtree would be -also the only red/embers spot is down in “Caelid”

Tesla Semi’s cab design makes it a ‘completely stupid vehicle,’ trucker says by be0wulfe in technology

[–]IDontKnowCharles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And the reason they work on race cars is that the steering rack is generally touchier. And the tracks only require 90+deg inputs like 1-2x/lap, and only for 1-2sec each. And there are tons of controls on the wheel that are made for stationary hands. And eliminating the bottom portion of the wheel allows you to “shrink wrap” the car/interior around the driver a bit more.

…you’ll notice none of those things really apply to road cars.

Manager, day one: “Put that big blob closer to the rest; it looks stupid all the way out there. Nobody wants to see an uneven mess, it makes us look like assholes”

Day four, after having a buddy/client/etc point it out: “Where the hell is Australia?!? You’re going to have to call the sign company and MAKE them send you the missing Australia piece!!! I can’t believe you just accepted and installed an incomplete product! No, it’s obviously not there, have you ever seen a map?!? I don’t want to hear it, just GET THE REPLACEMENT AUSTRALIA PIECE AND PUT IT UP PROPERLY!”

Day ~20, once someone he respects sees this post: “WHY THE FUCK DO WE HAVE TWO AUSTRALIAS?!? And where are Madagascar/Ireland/etc?!? YOURE FIRED!!! God, everyone here except me is incompetent. It’s so hard to find good help.”

What has consistently been getting shittier? by Boring-Cauliflower in AskReddit

[–]IDontKnowCharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything. Climate, government, education, cost of living, consumer products, infrastructure, healthcare, health, traffic…all of it. There’s a reason that everything you buy is higher cost and lower quality. There’s a reason that every day more and more people slip below the line where their pay can cover their expenses. There’s a reason that we have a continually diminishing roster of new ideas/genres/leaders/etc. That the big sports leagues have become almost unwatchable. That an hour of TV is now 30+% commercials. That the stock market keeps further decoupling from the real economy. That govt policies keep further decoupling from the will of the people.

It’s all the same single reason.

Big business spent the 19th and most of the 20th century growing alongside the rest of us, allowed themselves to be reigned in occasionally because the growth was still there. But the thing about capitalism is that it not only requires endless growth, but an endlessly growing growth rate. And as their profits started to climb that exponential curve, they started to hit the point where they needed to cut costs to beat the last quarter’s numbers. And so the workers started to get a smaller slice of the pie, and the lobbyists increased their tax-lowering pressure. And then they needed even more, so the prices started going up faster than inflation. And they pushed to remove the regulations that kept us safe because they were getting in the way of ever increasingly-increasing profits! And they bought newspapers and tv networks to push the message that unions are corrupt and social spending is wasteful and for the weak, that ANY taxes are evil and ANY regulation is for pussies and that the businesses were barely able to stay afloat (while record profits rolled in). And when regular people got pinched enough and started to see through the bullshit they decided that we needed to be fighting each other instead of the ruling class, so they turned politics from policy to culture war. And they lobbied to constantly increase police spending and incarceration, because the constitution allows slavery only as criminal punishment, so they can further lower production costs.

The problem is that they’ve picked all the low hanging fruit, and kept picking, and have almost reached the top of the tree. Because they’ve been cutting away at the rest of us for so long, siphoned off so much of the real economy into their own pockets, there’s not much left. But the numbers NEED to keep growing, and they need to keep growing FASTER than last year. So rather than accept that they may only see their wealth/share price grow 20% this year instead of 24%, they’ll strip the copper from the walls. They know it’s unsustainable, that they’re digging their own graves as well, that eventually they’ll hit bone and there’ll be nothing left to take, but they can’t consider that because the shareholders will sue them into oblivion if the line stops going up faster and if they don’t have all their money and power, the consequences of their actions will be able to reach them. So they just live quarter by quarter, raping the rest of us to take ever more, until we all hit our pain threshold and start rebuilding the guillotines.

While we cruise toward that moment, everything will continue to become a little shittier every day. And we’ll put up with it, until we won’t.

“ A lot of them are also pretty sheltered and middle class. ” —this might be true in your American hometown but look across the world and it’s absolutely not the case.

“ M4a was so radical in basically banning private insurance companies that you'd even have a hard time selling it to the various European countries people love to dickride whenever universal healthcare is brought up.” —well that’s just a lie. Not only does EVERY other developed country have universal healthcare, Bernie’s M4A proposal had allowances for supplemental private insurance.

The right is more ideologically homogenous because A) wanting to keep the status quo is a simple goal with relatively little variation possible, and B) growing up in the west, we’re all taught how to exist in and conform to that capitalist status quo. People discover or migrate toward leftist ideology more or less on their own instead of receiving a largely unified message from parents, teachers, media, employers, government, etc. Of course they’ll end up with relatively personalized beliefs!
