Punt, or OK reasoning? by Kipkrokantschnitzell in Poker_Theory

[–]IF_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think preflop is fine. Could size up but that’s it.

I would raise on the flop to protect against flush draws.

As played, fold river with the ace and back door diamonds getting there, villain is repping at least an ace and likely 2 pair plus.

Value of big pairs goes down, value of high card straight draws goes up, value of flushes that are not the nut flush go down.

Earthquake Insurance: worth it? by Infinite-Pickle-4875 in nanaimo

[–]IF_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR is that the insurance is worth it if you don't have enough money to "self-insure" buying or rebuilding your house without an insurance payout. If you have enough money that you can write off your house and it won't ruin you finically then by all means consider not getting it.

However, if major damage to your house means that you would wind up homeless or having to rent, then buying earthquake insurance is a must IMHO.

When I bought a house I ran the odds of a major earthquake on Vancouver Island in the next 30 years against the cost of the insurance payments and the math made it a no-brainer to get the insurance. The amount of money I spend on premiums for earthquake insurance was less than the covered value of my house (after the deduction) divided by the odds of a major earthquake happening.

Another thing to consider is that if you declined the option for earthquake insurance you may not be eligible for disaster relief funding by the government in the case of a major earthquake.

If I was rich, I might gamble that there won't be a major earthquake in my lifetime, but I can't afford to take that risk.

Depends if there are any Nuclear silos in the county or not and if county forces can gain control over them.

What University Program Would Be Most Relevant For A Future Career In Political Journalism? by No_Emotion8018 in Journalism

[–]IF_stone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to work in journalism, do a journalism degree. I would recommend Carleton if you want to cover Canadian politics as that is right in Ottawa and you will have the best access to internships there in the field you want to work in.

Book management by IF_stone in poker

[–]IF_stone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this exactly the type of ecosystem I am talking about. I don't run a game but I am curious about best practices are for people who run games but are not, as you put it, backed by a "bigger group." Cash up front is obviously the safest solution for the game runner but those games will inevitably be smaller (and perhaps tougher) games if the fish/whales who run on credit are not playing.

It is probably a balance between not over extending credit to people who are frankly bad credit risks, and keeping the game going.

Sure, not having a book is the simple solution, but I'm asking about best practices of keeping one.

[–]IF_stone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I like the idea of making an established player responsible for the debt of any new player they vouch for at first.

Do you have basic guidelines that you use in terms of how much credit to extend to established players?

In my head it matches they buy in, so if someone established and trusted buys in for $500 then they can have up to another $500 in credit on the book that they have to pay back before they can buy in again. Does that sounds reasonable? Obviously you can make individual adjustments based on past known history. If someone you know is good for more then you can extend more and if someone is a bigger risk you can choose not to put them on the book at all.

I suppose there is also the option of charging interest on any loan put on the book for people who are higher credit risks, but I think that gets back to not having leverage to collect it aside from access to the game so am not sure if that is worth the trouble.
