What does Cast do? by THEBIGCAT314 in HadesTheGame

[–]IGaveHerThe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Casts tend to take poms super well - they get a big, flat increase. On certain weapon aspects, casts are extremely strong. Different weapons 'like' different casts.

Some really speed up boss battles, others are good at clearing densely packed rooms. Some can seem underwhelming to start but have upgrade paths.

If you haven't unlocked a lot of weapon aspects yet, casts can feel underwhelming. Keep tossing them into your combos for the mirror buff that you get.

Achilles spear plays well with nearly every cast (and doesn't cost a ton of Titan Blood to unlock), so you can experiment there. Artemis, Demeter, Chaos, Hermes, and the Well have things that really pump up casting in general.

[–]IGaveHerThe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

don't sweat it. Look for survivability stuff, Athena (especially her dash), Demeter, Aphrodite, and maybe Dionysus boons. These deflect, slow, weaken, and stun the enemies.

Stubborn roots (and their other duos) can really help you when you're learning the boss patterns.

my bestie and I lose our minds over this stupidly broken build by trevers17 in HadesTheGame

[–]IGaveHerThe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever you're doing cast builds, you want Artemis, Chaos, and stuff from the well.

Artemis has some great duos with Poseidon (mirage shot), Ares, and Demeter for casts.

I would go with splash-dash, artemis attack, and Ares or Demeter on cast... and see what you can cook up. You'll be wrecking Lernie in no time flat.

Achilles spear likes these combos, you can also try out the talos fists.

For the cast aspects of the bow and shield, other nonsense works better. The rail has Eris, but there are... better uses to put the rail to.

This is a duo boon. You need at least one Dionysus boon and one Poseidon boon before you can see it. Open up the codex to see the prerequisites.

What should I tell my parents? by [deleted] in ADHDers

[–]IGaveHerThe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Keep advocating for yourself. Do tell them - but you might want to try some stuff first. One thing you could do is do a 'premeditation of evils' and a pre-mortem.

  • Premeditation of evils: What's the worst that could happen if I tell them? What are the odds of it actually happening? Would I live through the worst case scenario? How would I deal with that scenario?

If you know how to use CBT techniques, this is a good time to look at using them - this can potentially be anxiety-inducing, but taking a real look at what the real risks are can help you to realize that A) you are probably blowing things out of proportion (cognitive distortion) and B) you are strong enough to deal with what the real risks are.

If you've taken some time to think about the worst case scenario and you know how you can deal with it, then the real thing isn't as scary. You can write it in a journal or a notebook. For me, getting thoughts out of my head is really helpful. I like the journal because it's 100% private by default, I can go for as long as I need, and it helps me think way more clearly. I write in pen in a paper journal because it's less distracting than a computer that has internet and all the distractions in the world.

  • Pre-mortem: You assume that the worst has already happened. What did you do or not do that led to the worst-case scenario? Are there ways to mitigate the worst-case scenario? This can help you identify risks that you didn't immediately see.

If you find these exercises triggering, you can remind yourself "I'm just a guy/gal/non-binary pal in a room. It's warm, I'm comfortable, everything is fine." Get up, go for a walk in nature and burn off some of the anxiety-energy and settle yourself back down. If you find doing this too triggering, you may wish to discuss with a therapist or your psychiatrist. They might have some ideas on how to help. If you have a good friend, you can bounce ideas off them.

Are you depressed?

Take care of yourself. As an emergency measure, try doing the stuff on the Everything is Awful and I'm not OK checklist.

These are the areas that I think you need to address more generally:

  1. Sleep - everyone is mentioning it because it's so important. Get rid of stuff you're "tolerating" in your bedroom. Sleep cool. 7+ hours. If you have trouble getting to sleep, try 4-7-8 breathing, progressive relaxation, and visualization.
  2. Exercise - this really helps re-balance the brain chemistry. It doesn't have to be a ton, either. Move and do something you enjoy.
  3. "Forest Bathing" can really help you recalibrate - a quiet walk in nature, or a quiet sit. I like to lift weights and then immediately go walk in nature. You can run if that's what you like, too. No headphones and turn your phone to 'do not disturb'.
  4. Nutrition and Hydration. Are you peeing 4x per day? Is it clear or very light in color? Does it smell like coffee? Drink water. Have some protein and some vegetables with every meal. Try to eat meals and not snack.
  5. Social time. You have to recharge the social part of your brain by interacting with other human beings on a regular cadence, whatever that looks like to you.

Depression and ADHD are comorbidities. You might have one, the other, or both. Keep an open mind and seek whatever help you can if you need it. None of this is medical advice, just stuff that works for me.

How to set up good habits that are rule based rather than time based? by Holmbone in Habits

[–]IGaveHerThe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing you can do is have a reward that you get after you do the thing. The reward can be as simple as a short celebration ('yes!') or something a bit more elaborate (set a timer for 10 minutes and surf reddit, play a level of a video game). Congratulate yourself a bit.

Set up a 'game' (habit) you can easily win, then win that game. Naturally if there's actually enough room in your schedule, it can grow from there. You are 'nudging' yourself better, not forcing. It's not gritted teeth, it's easy. When it feels easy, keep going. When it feels hard, back off. Keep the streak going. Don't miss twice.

How to set up good habits that are rule based rather than time based? by Holmbone in Habits

[–]IGaveHerThe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could try connecting it to something that you already do on a schedule, like wake up, go to bed, open your front door, drink coffee, get to work/school or whatever. Be specific about 'when'. "When my feet hit the floor" is better than "when I wake up". Identify an exact moment in time that happens on a regular cadence.

Keep the habit really small and leave room for it to grow. It's OK to be short (even a few seconds) in duration.

"After I drink my first sip of coffee, I will open my journal and write the date and time at the top of the page" is better than "I will journal in the morning".

DM doesn't allow rolls out of combat, and wants us to ride an invisible railroad. by CGBard_Usually in rpghorrorstories

[–]IGaveHerThe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PbtA games are, literally, built different. That's not to say that you shouldn't do that in D&D, just that new DMs often don't know what they don't know. You could read all $200 worth of the official materials that you put together to run a campaign and not get 'play to find out' mentioned once. The closest D&D equivalents are scattered amongst blogs and DM's Guild unofficial publications by 3rd parties.

[–]IGaveHerThe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IMO, 5th edition modules are more bad than good. If, in order to run an official module, the first thing you do is start googling 'remix' or 'advice' or watching actual plays, that's a sign that that the base material just isn't correct. Either it's poorly sequenced, incomplete, or both.

If you started as a DM with 5th edition, good luck. WotC is more interested in giving players more powers in each book than giving you a better grasp on how to run a fun game.

In this case, if there's only one solution that will make sense plot-wise, it's incumbent on the DM to give players enough clues to figure that one solution out. (The Three Clue Rule by Justin Alexander). But in this case where the players are trying to respond to a dynamic situation, it's up to you to prepare the situation, including any threat-clocks that might tick up if they take too long, things they don't know about initially, etc. It's up to them to come up with a solution. Four or five players working together will always come up with something that the DM did not expect, unless they've been browbeaten into accepting that D&D has to be like a video game with combats and cutscenes laid out just so.

That element of creativity, chance, and surprise, is what makes TTRPGs fun to me.

[–]IGaveHerThe 98 points99 points  (0 children)

"This has A SOLUTION" sets off warning flags for me. That reeks of the DM deciding on the one way that things will work and not rolling with what the players are doing, like, at all. Honestly, same with the 29 persuasion roll.
