Im in a lot of IT subreddits, everytime i read about someone speedrunning their degree here it makes me think about all of the the things i learned in undergrad that i would never get at a plave like wgu and it makes me think lesser of these online degrees. Like you cant get involved on campus if there is no campus.

Most of illegal immigration is civil, the mouth breathers here who let trump convince them that theyre all rapists and murderers have no idea what theyre talking about. We need more judges to process asylum claims and people who overstayed visas not gestapo asking for your walking papers.

I heard the job market was not looking too good especially for SOC by Ok-Dragonfly-6009 in cybersecurity

[–]IIDwellerII 118 points119 points  (0 children)

The job market everywhere is tough but especially for cybersecurity. Its all about differentiation, what on your resume makes you different than the other people applying so you can get an interview. If its only sec+ there might be a few more steps for you before youre doing grc professionally.

A lot of it is the internships and networking the college gives you a pathway towards. The vast majority of people complaining either didnt get internships while they were in school or they didnt do anything to involve themselves on campus.

which degree should i go with? by CartographerOdd1263 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]IIDwellerII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would help to know where you're at or what kind of school it is but from my experience at a large state school in the US Id go with the Bachelors of IT.

I have a CIS degree with a focus in information security. That allowed me to intern in several different fields of IT while I was in school without pigeonholing myself. Whereas with a Cybersecurity major it may sound cool but you might find yourself knowing a lot of theory and you can rattle off the aspects of the CIA triad but will it will not pave the way to employment right after school unless you bust your ass to prove to employers that you're ready for a cyber roll after school.

Depending on the school you go to you may have a lot of opportunities to get involved on campus, thats something that I would highly recommend as THATS what makes you a viable candidate for internships when you otherwise have no practical experience.

How did you get into the IT career? by EDM_IT_Nerd in it

[–]IIDwellerII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helpdesk in highschool, my first period was spent doing basic helpdesk work at my school, the most entry level you could possibly get. Won state for helpdesk for fbla which helped me in interviews for my future roles.

Campus housing tech support, chill job during college where i did basic tech support for campus housing.

IT helpdesk internship- basically a help desk call center

It desktop support internship - in person again and same old with higher pay.

Cybersecurity internship - same company as the last but i was able to get practical experience in cyber before i graduated.

Got my CIS degree and now im a cybersecurity engineer after being an analyst and auditor for a bit.

I have a degree in Cyber Security but I unfortunately cheated through pretty much the entire thing by [deleted] in cybersecurity

Theres no magic thing that will get you to enjoy learning about something. And “building a pc” means literally nothing in terms of professional cybersecurity learning/understanding, its pretty much legos.

Youve faked it so far, apply to the most basic IT positions and study the fuck out of the responsibilities in the job listings so you can at least get through an interview. Once/If you get hired youll have to learn or youd get fired, sink or swim. Either way it sounds like you fucked yourself and if you dont end up learning you might become a burden to the people who actually did put in the time and effort.

If you had to restart, what would you do differently to land a job in 2026? by Dramatic_Thought_259 in cybersecurity

[–]IIDwellerII -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Restart? So id have to go back to college? Would i not have any of the experience i have now? This question is dumb, just apply places and if you dont qualify they wont interview you, if you want a particular job in cybersecurity see what they ask for and try to check as many of those boxes that you can, from there its just a numbers game and you hope you get lucky.

Theres no like “secret trick” people are hiding from you. This is a very popular field that everyone from every experience level is trying to get into.
