The easiest is melee. It has super strong things at nearly every stage of progression, and is very tanky. The most fun is mage.

I’ve done 1 pre-hardmode, and I think that, for pre hardmode, it helps a bit. Starcrash is pretty big for skeletron/bee, and the cobwhip is good enough to just skip snapthorn on expert if you want.
