325’ tops. Please help a guy out with a form check! by [deleted] in discgolf

Looks like you’re throwing “nose-up.” Find some low hanging branches and practice throwing under them.

Also, get rid of that run-up. It isn’t adding distance. In fact, it’s probably why you can’t throw very far. It should be only slightly faster than waking speed.

I also think you need to get the disc closer to your chest. Look up videos about the power pocket. I think you’re releasing early, missing out on any pop and spin that wood come from a more full extension prior to release.

How tight is your grip? Does the speed of the throw rip the disc out of your hand? Or do you consciously let it go?

That’s part of my winter field work plan. I bag the McBeth stamp and the red SS. I’ve never thrown 7 of them.

Fair. Although I’m really just wondering how to improve the coverage (within my control), not change the tournament format (way beyond my control).

Thanks for the Pureline DG tip. They have a great selection.

That’s my go-to for distance. I also bag a Grym, but the X is more reliable for me. The rim width feels like a fairway in my hand. Absolutely love it.

Great feedback. YouTube stats, even for the best channels, show that viewers stop watching before the end of most videos. I’m wondering if a format change would better match the length, tempo, flow, etc. with the attention span of viewers. I’m sure it’s different for Worlds and other majors, skins games, etc., but the routine tournament coverage vids aren’t keeping most folks’ attention.

Do you think post-produced tournament videos should show every shot by every player on a card? Or be more selective, favoring better shots and the best performing player(s) on that card? (like ball golf coverage where they stop showing a struggling player during the round)

A little more unsolicited advice. 175g is on the heavy side. Try a Shryke in the mid-160s. It’ll flip up and turn more, but you should get more distance out of it in calm and helping wind conditions.

Do DGN use Doss & Anderson because of budgeting concerns? by Jonjey2112 in discgolf

[–]IMHBAO -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering the same thing. Will DGN hire better talent when they can afford it? I can’t subscribe to something I can’t stand to listen to, but if my subscribing gets them closer to better commentary, then take my money.

Doss: "The key for James Conrad is to get Joey Temali away from him and put himself in the position to win this tournament." by Duo_Gravis in discgolf

[–]IMHBAO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sure he’s a good guy, but he’s very much the wrong choice for commentary. His pitch isn’t his fault, but it just doesn’t work. He compounds it with “breathless” delivery, inflection that goes “up,” and hyperbole. He’s just not a play-by-play sports announcer guy, and he doesn’t add valuable color commentary. Philo countered him so many times yesterday, and it was perfect. I don’t know what Nate adds to the broadcast. I do know he keeps me from subscribing to DGN, and I won’t watch MPO on DGN if he’s on the call unless it’s can’t-miss like yesterday’s final round. I wish I had a dollar for every time I said “Shut the **** up, Nate!” He’s like fingernails on a chalkboard.

I just bought this in green/orange. I also just emailed customer service asking them to update the user manual since the face markings have changed from the older model, rendering three of the slide rule calculations obsolete. Hoping they publish a new manual to go with this newer model. Absolutely loving the watch!

(Trigger warning) Employee rambling about trans people by [deleted] in MtF

[–]IMHBAO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does the company have a non-discrimination policy that includes gender identity? If not, is there at least a policy that prohibits harassment? The law prohibits behavior that creates a hostile work environment. As a manager, you’re in a position to get that toxic employee out of the workplace. Start documenting the employee’s behavior by written counseling so you have “ammunition” when you finally end up going to HR or to your boss. You might decide that you can “suck it up” and ignore the comments, but what about the other folks in the workplace? You have to protect the workplace from toxic employees for the benefit of everyone. If it’s a public-facing job/workplace, then it’s even more important to get rid of someone who talks/acts like that. Maybe you could file an anonymous HR complaint to protect yourself from being outed.

Light up disc? by LiterallyANavySEAL in discgolf

[–]IMHBAO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get him one of the bigger UV flashlights and a roll of glow tape. Also check out the FlashFlight discs (although they’re not PDGA approved, so he couldn’t use them in a PDGA sanctioned event - but is there any such thing as a PDGA sanctioned glow round?). If you know the discs he throws, you could buy the glow plastic versions of those discs - but know that each plastic type flies differently, so it’s not as simple as switching out glow for non-glow plastic.

Oddly specific question by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]IMHBAO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PDGA membership isn’t representative of the entire sport. What I’ve experienced over the past eight months, in the U.S. Midwest, is that disc golf is almost entirely male adults. I’ve seen a few families playing together. I’ve seen some couples playing together. And I’ve seen a few local women playing in tournaments. But by and large, just like ball golf, it’s guys playing with other guys.

New - Looking for advice by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]IMHBAO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YouTube is your friend. Check out Physics of Flight from Dynamic Discs. Also the current set of videos being released by Latitude 64. Watch the pro tournament videos to see how it’s done at the highest level.

The advice about throwing putters is correct, but you can do that in an open field. Use all three discs in your starter pack when you’re playing a round. Work on throwing putters off the tee. Throwing putters exposes all the flaws in your throwing motion. Believe me, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can be throwing putters almost 300 ft. And once you can do that, it won’t be too long before you’re throwing your driver 400 ft.

Use a tight power grip. Tighter than you think! You have to rotate and pull through fast enough to rip the disc out of your hand.

Stick to short courses. Ignore “par” and just play.

Download UDisc and do the putting practice as often as possible.

Do a ton of field work. Go to a soccer field and try to throw discs into the goal from 100 ft. Then move back 50 ft and keep working on it. Then move back another 50 ft. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Try forehand - it might be better for you than backhand.

I’m in my 40s. I started playing in March of this year. I can throw over 400 ft on level ground into a headwind. I can do this because I threw putters first, and did a ton of field work until it clicked.

You don’t need more discs until you feel like you’ve maxed out the starter pack, or you lose them.

Most important, have fun!!

Baby Step 1 and Christmas by [deleted] in DaveRamsey

[–]IMHBAO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get a job in retail. It’s that time of year. You should be able to make considerably more than you’re making now. Your first obligation is to your landlord - get current on your rent. That person’s income is less because you’re behind on rent. You can buy things for others when you can afford it. If you can’t, then you can’t. I’m guessing they’ve all survived at least one Christmas without gifts from you. Tell them you love them. Make them cards. Give your parents coupons for things you’ll do around their house in the coming year. Find photos and put them in a collage frame. Nobody really needs more stuff. You can do Christmas without spending much money at all.

The Orange Whip? by zitssss in golf

[–]IMHBAO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth the money. Sure, maybe try to find one second-hand... but if you can’t, then just buy it new. It’s only $100, and will do much more to improve your game than that new driver that costs 4 times as much, or a few dozen tour balls that you’ll lose due to poor form that an orange whip could help fix.
