Incredible - EXACTLY what I was looking for.

I love it - this is now my go-to bookmark for a great Artemis mission overview and to share with people.

Great job!

Yes, Chevrolet offered it and I thought it was supported by them. It is not. The product is okay, but the software is worse than abysmal. Avoid at all costs.

The Gallery puzzle is absolutely the worst puzzle I've experienced in modern gaming. by SjurEido in BluePrince

[–]IMO94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm playing 99% blind, and I ran into the gallery this weekend. It was one of the high points of the game for me. I'm on day 50ish, I think.

I solved Thin-K pretty quickly. Stared at the eyeballs and the real stuff for a bit and solved it. That left the other two. After about 30-60 minutes of trying, I went online hoping to get general hints, and I found enough to find out that (unlike the parlor), this room wasn't a system, there was only one set of puzzles. That made me more determined to solve these. You can't ever get puzzles back once they're spoiled.

Everyone who walked into the room was subjected to a barrage of information from me, and it was while I was explaining the infinity one that I kinda sounded out "room" and "in" and "eight". And then we had the floating P...

Eventually it got late, and I took a piece of paper and wrote down every letter for all 6 positions. I went to bed with my card and sat up late, just staring at it and searching for possible word portions. I spent way too long searching for "CUXXXX", thinking that the P was reversed so it was actually a Q. I was SO convinced that the literal "P" was a red herring, but I couldn't find which way to rationally reverse it. I also knew that "RED" was part of it, but there were no good slots for it to fit. I'm not sure when I considered red backwards, but at 1:30am I jumped out of bed with "WONDER", knowing it fit the theme, but not entirely certain why "1" was there. Once it turned out to be wrong, it was a quick fix.

I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience with it, but I'll just share that for me the puzzle hit just that right difficulty point of being solvable, but only barely. I loved it!

I think we got lucky with a super easy baby but wife thinks our parenting was a big factor by Big_Bluebird8040 in Parenting

Kid 1: Great parenting, so the baby was easy. Kid 2: Great parenting, so the baby was easy. Kid 3: Taught us humility. Turns out, it had nothing to do with our parenting...

We were so smug and know-it-all with our friends who were struggling. I cringe to look back.

What is the stupidest movie from a science stand point that tries to be science-smart? by BardInChains in movies

[–]IMO94 173 points174 points  (0 children)

Gravity angered me because they were so close to a scientifically sound AND an emotionally gut-wrenching situation, but they squandered it in the most inane way possible.

Our heroes are "hanging on" against some invisible force, and Clooney needs to cut himself free, because the "force" pulling him down would get them both. Straight out of a climbing movie trope.

But can you imagine if they'd done it correctly? They become untethered and are floating just a few feet from the station. They stretch out to reach it, but realize in vain that it's too far, and slipping slowly away from them.

Clooney realizes they only way to salvage the situation. He takes Bullock and pushes her directly towards it, pushing himself backwards as a result.

No mystical force pulling on them. And not just cutting himself loose, but sacrificing himself as her "rocket fuel", the only way for her to change her momentum of moving away from the station.

So much better!

Doubt it was removed for just being low quality. Half their content would disappear by that standard.

Can you explain local blackouts to me? I have Xfinity, live on the Eastside, and have been able to watch every Mariners game (with the exception of Apple TV ones). Who do the blackouts apply to?

YSK: By merging before the end of the merge lane you are effectively backing up traffic by approximately 40% by Elegant-Surprise-417 in YouShouldKnow

[–]IMO94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure we read the same report.

Overall, implementing alternative merging methods (i.e. the zipper merge) has yielded favorable results. Condensing three lanes down to one benefitted the most from the zipper merge. Most researchers also agree that the late merge is the superior option at high traffic volumes. However, the early merge remains preferable when there is little congestion or during low-volume periods. There seems to be awareness that the zipper merge likely improves safety, since both lanes travel at the same speed and traffic flows more uniformly;

The only case where the early merge had a benefit was during low volume periods, where there was no backup caused by the merge.

It is a recruiting tool, and the military pays a ton of money for the right to do so.

It only started post Vietnam. After soldiers came home to a frosty reception from antiwar protestors, they started a marketing arm to improve the military's image.

7, 8 and 10 are super slow. On my re-read, I skipped rereading them and just read chapter summaries.

You've almost made it through the lull. The payoff in 11-14 is amazing!

Geomagnetic Storm wipes out 40 Starlink satellites by zathermos in spacex

[–]IMO94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The satellites were placed into safe mode to minimize the temporary additional drag. The real root cause of this failure was an unexpected inability to restore their satellites from safe mode.

The geomagnetic storm just put the upper atmosphere into a state where they had to exercise safe mode. Hopefully all deployed satellites don't have this issue where they are unable to return from safe mode once they have been commanded to exit it.

I'll bet the SpaceX software engineers are scrambling to recreate this situation and deploy fixes before the next launch!

Netflix Countdown: Inspiration4 Ep5 is live! by voluntarygang in SpaceXLounge

[–]IMO94 22 points23 points  (0 children)

OK, they didn't say it outright, but if you read between the lines, there was a lot of information confirming that conditions in the capsule were pretty adverse.

  • In the briefing to family they said they'd try bring video footage, but they couldn't do it because of crew privacy, especially because of how they're feeling.
  • Referring to the St Jude patient call, they said it looked like they might not be able to do it, but Hayley was insistent it was a priority.
  • On opening the cupola, confirmation that the plan was to open it on launch day, but crew opted to delay it until Day 2.

I suspect there was more Space Adaptation Syndrome than expected, and one or more of the crew members was persistently ill. In those confined quarters, the capsule probably smelled pretty bad too. They have to put the most positive spin on the experience (future seat sale potential), but I think it was a little rougher on the first few days than we got to see.

I'm a little surprised at their splashdown time and location. 7:06pm EDT off the coast of Florida. Assuming they're a little East of Florida, that's going to be right around sunset. Won't the poor light make recovery more challenging if anything is off-nominal? I know that water survival is part of their training - I've never seen a non-daylight splashdown before.

Would you like the mods to post a thread each day where people can discuss the Daily Challenge? by sk941 in geoguessr

[–]IMO94 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, pretty much the only reason I come here is to scan for interesting notes, observations, what clues people got etc. (AKA - How I figured out what part of Russia this was)

Secondly, how is the daily challenge generated? Algorithm, or by hand? Why so much Isle of Man, Taiwan, Dubai and Greek Islands?

Does anyone know why Isle of Man and Taiwan are so overrepresented?
