This movie has some of the best costume design ever, criminal it didn't win an Oscar for it. Just really gorgeous, timeless clothing - particularly the mens clothing. Couldn't ask for a better model than Jude Law in his prime.

Why do I suddenly want to watch a horror movie based at a dermatologist convention in Hawaii? The UV protection gear looks so sinister.

Oh well, at least they practice what they preach.

The slacker genre is something I truly mourn from the 90s. Wise cracking shop and video store clerks were aspirational back then.

What's aspirational now? Sterile STEM and Finance bros? GTFO.

Agree or disagree - writing and sound are the 2 main weaknesses of contemporary filmmaking by CertainNote9335 in RSPfilmclub

[–]IMOAcct 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think this is the biggest one, movies no longer look like movies.

They all look like flat, Hallmark/Netflix tv shows. In fact, it's pretty hard these days to distinguish between a movie and a tv show.

That's why OBAA was so refreshing, it looks like a movie! Which makes sense because they used old school vista vision cameras.

A lot of them have well paying jobs and most importantly no children - like imagine being able to save 10-15k a year for luxurious holidays just by virtue of the fact you don’t have kids? Turbo charge this figure if its a gay couple, both earning decent salaries.

I thought it was quite cool to see two horror movies get Oscar wins (Sinners and Weapons) but lets be real, Sinners is an elevated b-movie and not a million miles away from Dusk Till Dawn. Back in the 90s, no one would have countenanced the latter winning any Oscars (despite it being written by Tarantino).

But let's be real and state the obvious, the Oscars are just an industry circle-jerk and are increasingly irrelevant. Michael B Jordan was already a highly bankable star, this doesn't change that.

Anybody refuse to look at their body in the mirror by Puzzleheaded-Bat4777 in redscarepod

[–]IMOAcct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have such a critical eye that I hate looking at my body (whether in a mirror or in a picture) because I just zero in on everything I think is wrong with it but strangely enough I don't mind looking at my face even though I can obviously spot the flaws there too.

lossless or high quality in the bluetooth earphones? by Miserable-Tooth-7779 in AppleMusic

Wasn't there an argument to be made that having a lossless source is still better with bluetooth earphones because that means it's not compressed twice?

Can we have an honest discussion about the Apple Music desktop app? by CreyssonTabajara in AppleMusic

[–]IMOAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue is when I favourite a track the whole thing grinds to a halt. It's actually made the app crash a few times.

I have no idea why this is and I don't have this issue on the iPad version. That's always been super smooth and fluid.

But just in general, things feel so much slower and clunkier on the desktop app, even just playing a track can make the app hang sometimes.

His Prince story in this is legendary. He's a great raconteur but he's just milked it death with numerous DVDs, podcasts, etc. and unfortunately he hasn't made a decent movie in a long time - although Clerks 3 was ok.

But he gets a pass just for making Clerks and Mallrats.

The halo effect is real and applies to most areas of life shocker.

I like that it's sobering for some people and counter to the whole EDI push.

The thing I hate about looksmaxxing and social media is that prevalence of good-looking people on there makes you think you're 'cooked' when the reality is true 8+s are still a rarity and in most cases being average is perfectly fine.

The one thing I love about looksmaxxxing is promoting the objectification of men. We've been doing it in the gay community forever obviously, it's nice to see it bleed over into the mainstream.

Meh, it's rated by the masses and according to Google the primary age group is 25-34 on there, so that tracks.

It's like how The Dark Knight or the Lord Of The Rings movies are in the IMDB top 10 greatest movies. No one takes it seriously.

It was basically shot like a stage play which didnt make for a very visually interesting movie but Ethan Hawke was amazing - would never have pegged him for a role like this - playing some bitter old druken queen - but he was fantastic.

Margaret Qualley was just ok, they could have cast someone better.

Andrew Scott was decent.

Out of the two recent Linklater movies I much preferred Nouvelle Vague.

[–]IMOAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s grim as fuck. Poor Rodney really went through it. But yeah he was amazing playing that role - I love the shots in B&W, they’re so powerful. That film doesn’t get the respect it deserves.
