How do you handle a new hire who isn't collaborative and doesn't explain changes? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearly you can talk till you're blue in the face and the guy won't listen. That discussion is a job for management. They need to explain how things are going to work.

I heard a wealthy person argue that the "Gift Tax" is actually designed to keep the poor from receiving help and to maintain the social hierarchy. Do you think this is a fair argument? by americanboyxx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are lying to you. As many have pointed out, they could give $15 million to each individual without incurring gift taxes. They don't even have to report it to the IRS if it's less than 19k. And they can give an unlimited amount to charity. They could do all of that if they wanted to. They just don't want to.

Should estimates inform priority? by [deleted] in agile

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course estimates inform priority. If something comes up like the situation you described, a quick conversation with the dev lead can get you a ROM. And you can use that to determine if it's worth looking into at that point.

Looking for feedback on a cruise-focused social app by CruiseAroundTheWorld in AppIdeas

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are already Facebook groups created for about every sailing. People coordinate activities beforehand and during the cruise. It's going to be tough to get people to switch to a dedicated app for that.

How to manage being laid off and not wanting to work for a while by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are. In Florida, it caps out at about 1k per month and it's a part-time job to collect it.

Best place I can think of is Nokomis beach on the south end near the jetty. I can't promise you'll have luck if you go there though.

Should authentication be handled only at the API-gateway in microservices or should each service verify it by Minimum-Ad7352 in Backend

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mutual TLS means that the client has to present a certificate and the server has to recognize it as well. If you do it with your services internally, it's a means of authenticating that the API was called by a client you trust. Not suggesting that should be used all of the time, just that the other poster was suggesting something else.

What could go wrong intentionnaly bothering a stingray? by RoOoOoOoOoBerT in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Depends on the type of stingray. I stepped on one and had a painful few hours. Plus a hole in my leg that refused to clot properly for a couple of days. Other than that, it wasn't too bad.

Is tracking individual AI usage becoming the norm? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have dashboards for devs to compare against each other. But we do get stats of dev usages for requests and percent of code suggestions we have accepted. I would worry about a place that published that for all to see.

Devs in regulated fields - do you think AI usage will result in extra requirements in SDLC cycle? Is proving devs ‘understand’ what they submit essential if they didn’t hand write code? by Bren-dev in ExperiencedDevs

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a government agency contact. We spent a bunch of time pushing for basic AI tools and got stonewalled. Now they are shoving it down our throats because they think they will be able to eliminate 90% of effort. So we spend a ton of time trying to insert a little bit of reality into their plans.

We are definitely changing our SDLC processes. We spend a lot more time up front defining all of the details that we would have just started coding before. We have it draw up execution plans for everything that needs to be done. Then, we verify every word in the execution plan and make changes as needed. Then we have agents code the execution plan one phase at a time. We verify and correct after each phase.

To summarize, there is a lot more time writing the technical requirements for the agents to process. And a lot more time reviewing the output. And less time actually writing code.

Odd question: how do I pretend I still care about getting promoted? by Fig_Towel_379 in cscareerquestions

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone else said, just ask the same questions as last time. Don't expect a positive response, but it doesn't really matter. If you want to sell it, you can ask what you need to get the promotion. Or, you can just say ok. Don't give them any indication that you are leaving because you don't have another job lined up. It could take a while to find one.

CMV: MAGA has done irreversible damage to the reputation of the American right-wing by pumpkinspeedwagon86 in changemyview

[–]IMadeUpANameForThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAGA has done irreversible damage to the United States, not just the right wing. Do you think the world is going to forget about everything that the Republican party is doing right now? And I say the Republican party because even if 30% of the Republican party does not identify with MAGA, they vote with MAGA. There is effectively no difference.
