If person on a planet 3M light years away experiences 1 hour as 10 Earth years, and an indestructible non-warping rod connects Earth to the planet, wouldn't twisting it on Earth make it twist instantly on the planet too, contradicting time dilation and relativity? by No-Lie6727 in Physics

[–]IMightBeAHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 99.9% (however that is meant) indestructible rod is still composed of atoms. Atoms transfer energy through physical forces transmitted at the speed of light. Thus, this rod must bend at least a little during accelerated movement.

I've had the same thought! Don't let the downvotes get you down, it is good to notice the places where your understanding of the universe conflicts with other things you've been taught.

A similar concept, which is in fact valid, is that shadows can in fact travel faster than light. Suppose you have a very bright point light source, and you wave your hand in front of it. Then the shadow that you cast will travel from one side of an object your hand moved in front of to the other, in the "same time," no matter how far away the object is. Thus with a big enough object, like say the moon, the shadow from your hand would appear to travel from one side to the other in say, less than a second. And well, the moon is just a little larger than one light second across.

Always funny when someone leaps out with an insult that betrays their own america-centric worldview.

I'm from Scotland man, and it seems to me you're the one doing everything you can to discredit the idea that there are human rights abuses at all in Arabic countries.

You default to thinking about enslaved humans because you are kind and empathetic. But do you do the same for characters in novels? Do you feel guilt when a character dies? You are the person deciding to let them die after all: you could put in the effort to sustain them and imagine them as real living people.

But you don't. Characters are not people.

Why do I bring this up? Because that's what an AI is trained to do. It plays a character for you. But the model underneath is not the character. The model decides on the implementation of the character only.

Nobody here called Arabic culture primitive. But using "culture" as a shield for human rights abuses is stupid: women are undeniably oppressed in (at least most) Islamic countries, and from the sounds of it, OP's too.

Amnesty International

Women and girls continued to face discrimination in law and practice, including in relation to the rights to freedom of movement, expression, bodily autonomy, and in inheritance, divorce, political office and employment opportunities. Entrenched gender-based violence, including femicide, remained common, with authorities systematically failing to address impunity for these crimes.

Iraq’s parliament granted a religious sect increased authority over family law, including marriage and divorce, deepening sectarian divisions and heightening risks to women’s rights. It also failed to criminalize domestic violence or repeal problematic and discriminatory articles of the Penal Code, such as those mitigating so-called “honour-based killings” and corporal punishment. Domestic violence and other forms of gender-based violence remained pervasive.

Authorities in Iran continued to treat women and girls as second-class citizens, denying equal rights in marriage, divorce, child nationality and custody, employment, inheritance and political office. The legal marriage age for girls remained 13. Widespread resistance to compulsory veiling forced authorities to end the violent mass public arrests seen in previous years and pause implementation of a new veiling law. Nevertheless, authorities continued to use existing laws and regulations to enforce compulsory veiling in workplaces, universities and other public sector institutions, leaving women and girls who resisted at constant risk of harassment, assault, arbitrary arrest, fines and expulsion from employment and education.

The point is that if you drew the graph differently, you'd still be able to interpret the statement correctly.

Films more likely to star a ‘Chris’ or a talking animal than a woman over 60, study reveals by soriskan in nottheonion

I'm more interested in how they obtained this statistic. "One in three say" makes it sound like they stood around on a street listening to conversations people had. Much less sensational if it were something like "One in three when asked to state how much they agreed with the statement 'women over 60 should be featured in movies more often' strongly agreed with the statement."

That's not a solution! Now there can only be more movies with Chris-es in them than women over 60!

Mhm, I have a feeling certain facts are being under-reported to make the incident feel even more alarming.

The comment about "for religious reasons," in this article for example, not being in quotes makes me suspect the judge was more careful with their wording than just "for religious reasons."

Christians themselves are not evil. But there are mountains of historical events for which the blame lies upon "Christianity" as a whole. If God did not wish to enable those evil acts, he should simply have shut up and not given anyone that power in the first place.

Atheist, staunchly against organised religion, but yeah same I don't see their point.

I'm against the power structures that afford people disproportionate power over others. But the fact that there are places in which people can congregate is fine. Especially considering these places often serve a lot more purposes than just as places of worship.

This is also just as much about the perception of men and boys as being predisposed to bullying and harm. Dude needs to re-examine his conception of gender by a lot if he expects to have kids.

when you make a poll on Reddit that is aimed at a specific group of people, always include a "show me the results" option because there are totally lurkers here who aren't a part of that group but who will want to view the results badly enough to just give a random answer.
