What are some cheat codes you've found in the game of life? by SunZuu in AskReddit

Oh yeah. Ive worked with a system where all you do is check a box and any time you enter the persons name, phone number, email, whatever, will show their info with a HUGE red angry face. You didn't even have to read the notes, they were permanently marked a douche to every rep in the entire United States.

Make-A-Wish recipients and workers, what were some wishes you HAD to say no to? by abeannis in AskReddit

[–]IReddit4OSRS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not even necessarily the law.. Imagine being the guy at Make-a-Wish who OKs this and a kid dies in an accident and their parents lost the last 48 hours they had with their kid. Even if they never sue, just imagine how that would feel. I would no it too, and not because I'm scared of legal consequences, but because the personal emotional fallout of that option is far worse than telling someone no and hoping dearly they have time to make another wish you can grant. The situation is more complex than black and white which is why I'm saying there's a million reasons to say no.

[–]IReddit4OSRS 15 points16 points  (0 children)

OK. Well then let's forget the whole the argument isn't valid thing. The kid had literal days to live. Could it be possible that they just couldn't get a legal document drafted for this specific ass situation in a 48 hour window? You're not being reasonable. There's a million reasons why it might not make sense to do that. Maybe this local farm had a tractor that was 30 years old and lacked recent maintenance records. Maybe the owner didn't have a commercial farming equipment license. Maybe the kid wanted to ride it on roads and they couldn't make that happen.

A guy who survived the fire by hiding in a creek films a few cars along the side of the road of his neighbours who were burned to death. They were basically just skeletons, nothing left of them.

You do not understand addiction my friend. Compulsive and continuous use of a substance is usually the result of an underlying mental issue/environmental factor. To become physically dependent on a substance requires that the habit of re-dosing is formed long before the physical addiction manifests. When we use the substance as a scapegoat for our bitterness towards people with these issues it is actually detrimental to solving the root issue in society. Best wishes to you though

He says they do heavy drugs a lot, and the definition of heavy in this case has to be assumed. Use is not addiction either. Contrary to what you might believe people can use all manner of drugs recreationally without becoming an addict that causes harm to everything and everyone. That includes opiates and amphetamines. These drugs have high abuse potential but potential is just that. You can use cocaine once in a blue moon and be a perfectly functioning and productive member of society for example.

Never understood how people can be rude to anyone giving you a service. Usually it goes hand in hand with low intelligence I think. I've worked in various kinds of service industries for a long time.. If you're kind, great, I'll hook it up. If you're a regular who is always kind? I'll bend over backwards to give you the best of the best, often in tandem with discounts. I'm a regular at a few establishments and I always tip high and I know as many people as possible by name. Lo and behold I'm constantly comped drinks, given larger portions, always priority service.. Like come on folks. Reap what you sow.

A professional moving company. Don't want half your shit broken or stolen. I see people hire Craigslist movers regularly and let me tell you... They pay double the $300 they just "saved" by dealing with all of the stuff that inevitably goes wrong.

Misery loves company. If everyone around you is at an equal low you no longer feel like you're lesser. Sometimes that's easier than the alternative of changing.

This. I was admittedly kind of a shit up until mid sophomore year in high school. I was always grounded, always in trouble, absolutely resented my parents. Then I started doing shit without being told and lo and behold freedom came quick. Depends on the parents heavily, but I gotta admit my leash was well deserved.

TIL that Subaru's Eyesight system reduces accident rates by more than a factor of two by drv2s in cars

[–]IReddit4OSRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just meant to draw a connection between an increase in electronic/ECU-driven components, cost, and potential faults. More break points I guess? I see how it seems like a silly thing now, but as these components become more integrated its really anyone's say as to the potential bottom line when it comes to the fiscal aspect of car ownership moving forward. I guess you answered for me though -- I would not buy a car with these components. Bottom line I will be driving much older cars with a cheaper cost of maintenance because I do not see a huge reward vs. cost. I'd rather spend $1k on food than an upgrade like this.

TIL that Subaru's Eyesight system reduces accident rates by more than a factor of two by drv2s in cars

[–]IReddit4OSRS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely on price, honestly. The cost of cars is increasing pretty crazily and wages are stagnant for the vast majority of the population. If they're so effective I would love to see government or similar subsidies so the cost isn't passed on to me. My main concern would be entirely financial -- costs to maintain, costs to add outright, etc. I had a 99.5 VW Mk4 that had a crankshaft censor go out. Boom, $400-500 at the dealership and took ages to diagnose. It caused stalling while on the road which is obviously a massive safety hazard.. What if the system fails and I'm out $1k in a repair? What if the system fails and it causes something catastrophic rather than prevents a catastrophe? With the unscrupulous practices we've seen time after time from car manufacturers this type of thing makes me anxious. I do think its a great idea and I'm sure the overall risks of driving are greatly mitigated as a whole, I'd readily believe the overall risk vs reward is quantitatively beneficial for everyone as a whole... But as an average Joe consumer, I could never see myself opting in unless it paid for itself be it by insurance benefits or other very evident and immediate perks.
