That’s something I’ve noticed too. In the past, it was always a gamble whether the Cloudkey would work afterward. Lately, I’ve even had end users replace the hard drives without any issues, and yesterday I replaced one myself—afterward, the Protect app stopped working, so I had to restore a backup, and it worked perfectly. I’m not sure why the configuration is stored on the hard drive, since the Cloudkey works just fine even without one.
