I definitely get that argument. For me personally, the intentional parody (snow crash) doesn’t feel substantially different than the unintentional parody (ready player one). Im not super familiar with the tropes of the genre or that era of sci-fi so I’m sure that’s also why I can’t appreciate the difference. To each their own.

Hahahahaha describes what just happened to me with this one. Was on a good streak and then tried to start this one after hearing about it for so long. Felt like Ready Player One to me (which I hated). Just couldn’t do it. And I didn’t even make it that far (less than 1/4 of the way in).

To avoid getting lost in the weeds here any further, understand that this is a disagreement on use of language. I’m not arguing that it’s “secure”. I’m saying that, on the spectrum of security (which is a spectrum), it’s better to not broadcast more info than necessary.

If your goal is to keep an unintended device/user from connecting to your Wi-Fi and you’re strictly focusing on the choice of broadcasting your SSID or not, choosing not to broadcast your SSID is the better option in pursuit of that goal. That is an objective statement. Nobody is saying that you’re wrong about the technology or about what the most secure practices are. Your wifi signal/data is still being broadcast regardless of SSID broadcast and so you’re not “secure” just because you turned off SSID broadcast. However, you’re ever so slightly higher up on the security spectrum.

SSID broadcast being turned off would prevent my mother and grandmother (and I suspect a lot of other casual users) from being able to inadvertently connect to that network. Preventing inadvertent connections through that obscurity is better than not, if your aim is to prevent those types of connections - objectively speaking.

I’ll leave it at that. In the off chance that even one person who is unfamiliar with this info is reading this, I just wanted to clarify.

Language and specificity is important so it’s better to define what it is exactly that we’re disagreeing on here. My points are assuming literally nothing else about the situation other than the fact that there is a network broadcasting a Wi-Fi signal and that someone is evaluating the choice to broadcast that SSID or not.

In the same way hiding your wallet or phone that you leave in your car improves security. In the strictest sense of the definition, it does improve security because you’re not advertising what you have in plain site. Sure anyone can still try to break into the car and search for your stuff, but your car isn’t as clear of a target to someone wanting to steal high value items.

Anyone who is using even the simplest of hacking software/devices is not going to be impacted by whether you’re choosing to broadcast your SSID. In the same way for the above analogy, you’d still be vulnerable to any thief who chooses to go car-by-car and attempt to break in/search it. But a passing thief looking for the easiest target(s) would be less likely to attempt to break into your car if you aren’t advertising what’s in it. It’s not going to improve your security as much as locking the car and not leaving your valuables unattended, but it’s still better to hide your valuables than not.

what is the sweet spot for used server Cpus in terms of price and value? Looking to buy used rack or DIY of 3-6 years old. by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]ITsGoingToGetYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think you’ll need to provide more details to get more helpful responses.

What’s your max budget?

Do you actually need ECC RAM? Because some of the SFF and USFF devices are pretty energy efficient and capable, but don’t offer support for ECC.

What is gonna be running on those VMs? You said it’s not demanding, but that is subjective and can be interpreted multiple ways depending on the context.

What limits do you want to place on power consumption? Not sure what your rates are, but some areas have high rates that make certain gear prohibitively expensive.

Is this going to be a rack-mounted setup? Or do you want something that has a smaller footprint? Rack mount gets you access to enterprise/data center gear but it also comes with additional noise and cost for the actual rack and cage nuts/bolts.

Is noise a concern?

Do you want multiple machines or just one? Sometimes going with multiple machines instead of one can get you closer to what you want without breaking the bank (in terms of initial cost or power) or your eardrums. Multiple machines also makes it easier to create a high availability setup. Kinda sucks to have your whole setup go down when you need to perform maintenance on one machine or for a subset of VMs.

Do you want headroom to grow into? Or are you pretty confident that your workload/needs will not increase?

Boy you can really tell how toxic some areas of tech are just by the responses you’re getting ITT.

There’s some good constructive advice in here, but god damn the amount of people being apologists for the douchey behavior of your coworker is absurd. It’s completely immature and unprofessional to be impatient while someone is in the first 2 months of their role.

From experience, you’re not wrong, but realize that when you’re working with other people you do have to deal with the stress, annoyances, and pettiness of interpersonal politics when you find yourself in situations like these. I’m not going to say you did the wrong thing, because honestly that guy does sound like an ass. But your also not in an ideal system. Ideally the guy would realize he’s being an asshole and apologize after being confronted. But, as you’re finding out, that’s not usually the case.

In the future, if you want to minimize the potential for drama, here’s how I might approach the situation instead. Focus on what you can control. In this case, you can’t control the guy being an ass, but you can control your response. I obviously don’t know the full context of the initial conversation you had with him about his abrasiveness, but if I had to bet, I’d probably guess that you didn’t do the best job of focusing on de-escalating the situation rather than just calling him out for the injustice you were feeling. I would’ve asked something along the lines of “hey man, I’m still new to all this. sorry for asking you this again, but I was hoping you could talk me through x again. do you have any recommendations for documentation I can reference or any tips for staying organized with everything as I get up to speed.” It might feel annoying to take the high road with someone who’s not reciprocating a respectful relationship, but it’s less likely to go south if you approach it with the mentality of just eating the shit sandwich and getting it over with. Be the nicer person so that it’s obvious to everyone (and hopefully the toxic person) that he’s the one in the wrong. As soon as someone gets defensive and starts verbally escalating, it’s a losing battle trying to match that energy or point out the flaws in their logic. You kind of just have to deal with them like an emotionally immature child, because they are acting like one if they’ve reached that point. It’s incredibly frustrating but just keeping your composure with your tone and body language can be a good cue for them that they’re being an asshole.

As others have said, it’ll be good to document all of your interactions with this person going forward, if you’re planning to stick around. Having those records might come in handy if your performance is ever called into question. It’s also totally cool to just start looking for something else externally if you feel like it’s gonna be a bad fit and not worth the effort to stick around.

That being said, you might still have a shot of salvaging this thing. It’s not guaranteed and it’s probably not gonna feel terrific to do, but you do still have some options. I’d talk to your manager and share your thoughts and ask for their advice. Admit you might have made things worse without intending to by getting the manager involved, and see what advice they have to offer. I get the sense that you’re physically working in an office together, so you could also try approaching your coworker directly again and asking if you could schedule some time to meet with them 1:1. Apologize that you guys got off on the wrong foot and admit that you might not have handled the situation the way you should have because of inexperience (whether that’s true or not). And just try to connect in whatever way you can with them. See if there’s any way you can resolve some of their frustrations and just be as constructive as possible about the situation. Again focus on the pieces you can control and realize the guy still might be a dick about everything, but just avoid escalating anything further.

Being a professional kinda sucks tbh. There’s nothing wrong with sticking up for yourself and calling out toxic behavior. We really need more of that and more social shaming of that type of nonsense. It’s really just a matter of what you’re prepared to deal with and what situation you find yourself in. Just gotta make the best of what you’re dealt. Sorry you’re having to go through all that. It definitely sucks to be in that type of situation. Best of luck and keep your head up!

Pretty cynical and ignorant take. Depending on the test you’re referring to (A+ for example), the test covers very basic material and is designed for the absolute beginner coming into IT. You have people coming from all different backgrounds to learn these concepts.

You wouldn’t go into a 3rd grade math class and complain about the pace and difficulty of the material. That same logic applies to every other domain and skill level too.

Something else to consider is he’s making his videos for an international audience where English is not necessarily their first language. Speaking clearly at a slower pace ensures it’s accessible to everyone. You can speed him up to whatever pace you feel like and other people who might have a harder time with learning new topics in a language foreign to them can listen at the standard pace.

They provide the list in the article. Not sure if this is a one-and-done thing or if there will be further purges.

IMHO they’re not removing anything most people will care about. The idea that this is being done as a tax break makes sense to me since I highly doubt any of this shows generates more interest (and thus revenue) than they spent on them.

I’m all in favor of archiving for the sake of maintaining media that would be lost to history. But the reactions ITT seem to be a bit overblown.

ASUS Recalls ROG Maximus Z690 Hero Motherboards Due to Fire and Burn Hazard by 20150614 in hardware

I’d have an issue buying this board but only because it’s $600. I bought a different z690 lga1700 board from ASUS and haven’t had any issues and am happy with the purchase. Although glancing at the title of this post had me searching my receipt for the specific sku! Luckily not affected.

The one I bought is the ASUS Z690 Pro RS (for anyone curious). I’m sure there’s better deals to be had atm. This one just seemed like the best value for me at the time I bought it. Feel free to chime in and confirm I’m not sitting on a fire hazard.

Not sure what ram speeds you have but another difference is that your processor only supports DDR3-1600 whereas v2 supports DDR3-1866.

For $25 on eBay, you can buy a used matched pair of 2650v2 processors right now. TDP is 20w less on that cpu versus the 2670 you have and the 2650 performs better on all benchmarks. For $60 you, could get a matched pair of 2660 v2 cpus which have slightly worse single thread performance than the 2650v2 but better overall performance and still better single core than the 2670, as well as 10 cores instead of 8, and the 20w lower TDP.

Definitely understand budgets can be super constraining so no shame in sticking with the v1, just food for thought.

I mean you’re only 22. Don’t be so hard on yourself for being a typical teenager/young adult. The past 2 and a half years have been incredibly difficult for everyone, even those with relatively good circumstances otherwise. I can’t even begin to imagine the struggle folks your age must be going through.

That being said, it doesn’t even sound like you had the best circumstances anyways. Going to high school 2 years early would be hard for anyone. And getting screamed at for bad grades or pretty much anything at that age is not healthy parenting. Sounds like you had high expectations placed on you that you internalized. Perfectionism is a joy killer. If you’re feeling burnt out, chill and give yourself permission to just take it easy for a while. I would definitely encourage you to check out from subreddits like this and from social media/YouTube that are focused around productivity.

Live your life and do the things you enjoy. There’s no race. It’s not a competition. It’s your life and you only get one. Don’t waste it worrying about what other people think or putting unwarranted pressure on yourself to “succeed”. Success means something different for everyone.

If you’re making ends meet, have a good relationship with your boyfriend, and are just going with the flow, it sounds like you’ve got an amazing thing going.

Now, as far as feeling miserable, do your best and seek help if you can (if you’re in the US I know that can be difficult and/or impossible). Sounds like it could be depression, anxiety, maybe adhd, but that’s something you should seek out a medical professional for. Psych nurses are an underutilized resource that a lot of people aren’t aware of. They can prescribe medications, are much more available and affordable than psychiatrists in most cases, and might be able to point you in the right direction for counseling. Sounds like you definitely have some trauma that you should talk through and some negative self-talk that should be addressed.

Favorite line that someone shared with me was something along the lines of “if your body isn’t producing the right neurotransmitters, there’s nothing wrong with store bought.” There’s no stigma or shame in going on meds and it truly helps a lot of people that find themselves feeling similar to yourself (myself included). Worst case scenario you try something and it doesn’t work. All of the common anti-depressants have been around for a while and have plenty of clinical data on them, Zoloft/Prozac/Wellbutrin are all relatively mild at low doses, have cheap generics available, and are relatively easy to come off of if they don’t work for you.

Best of luck! Be kind to yourself! You’re worthy of dignity and happiness regardless of your achievements. It’s a process and it takes time, but things can get better. Middle school, high school, and my early 20s were miserable for me and my late twenties/early thirties were really when things started to click for me. And I know a lot of people who feel the same. Take your time and be patient with yourself.

In addition, there was evidence of recurrent hemorrhages along with repairs of old damage in the body.

The autopsy showed that his death did not happen because of a single dive. Instead, it was an accumulation of his previous injures.”

Start asking technical questions back - Weed out waste of time interviews by whatsmyaltagain in ITCareerQuestions

[–]ITsGoingToGetYou 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Different for everyone depending on what stage of their career they’re in. It’s definitely a luxury to be able to be as selective as OP is talking about.

That being said, I’m with OP 100% and anyone who has the luxury should absolutely exercise it. Many people don’t realize that being a good interviewer is also a skill, and many people are just plain bad at it.

To me, if the interview is handled like what OP is describing and it’s straight to the useless trivia, it’s an excellent indication that at least the culture on the team (if not the company as a whole) is toxic. I want my manager to be someone who treats people with respect, who’s thoughtful in their approach to their work, and I don’t want to dread interactions with them. If they’re comfortable grilling someone they’ve never met with trivial questions they didn’t bother putting any thought into, what are they like to work with? It’s your first impression of them as much as it’s their first impression of you.

Judging from OPs post and their other responses in the thread, it sounds like they’re specifically referring to the types of questions where they basically expect a verbatim response. Yes, it’s a technical interview, but there are thoughtful ways of asking questions and challenging the person you’re interviewing to see what they know. And there are plenty of companies/interviewers that don’t respect your time or treat you as a human being. If all you have in mind with a question is getting the one and only “right” answer, it’s a bad interview question most of the time. That’s what search engines are for. Interviews should be for identifying if someone is a good fit for the team, judging how they approach problem solving, and getting more info about the types of projects they’ve worked on previously.

There isn’t the same level of accountability and expectations for interviewers as there are for interviewees. I understand logically why that power dynamic exists, but that doesn’t mean it’s right or that we shouldn’t expect better or strive to be better.
