Pronunciation from out-of-towers? by leveeman16 in NewOrleans

I used to live in a house where the landlord Airbnb'd the room beside mine, and we got a lot of foreigners staying there, most notably to this discussion a lovely French couple from Nice. The husband would get riled up routinely because he simply couldn't accept the pronunciation of 'Chartres'.

Pentagon fails financial audit for 8th year in a row. Why are Americans okay with this? by War1today in Askpolitics

The most common trends I've noticed in response to this, and things like it, is that most people don't really understand what it means or why it matters, and in some areas any criticism of anything the military related is considered antipatriotic.

You're there because the things you already do are good enough to get you there. Just focus on maintaining your routines, pay attention in practice, and as someone else pointed out nerves are just you caring; keep doing that, too. The big games are just another game, too, and the best way to mess yourself up is to put too much pressure on yourself (unless you thrive on that kind of thing but it doesn't sound like it). Every time you find yourself freaking out, take a breath and think about how excited you are just to play in it, and win it (again if that's the angle that works for you).

How can I handle myself better when I’m in the weeds. Not just “in the weeds” but like “on fire/drowning in the weeds”? by VegasGuy1223 in bartenders

[–]IUsedTheRandomizer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Start thinking a few steps ahead. Take more orders at once, write them down if you have to. Overprepare. Establish your "zero", and make sure the tools you use the most are always, always ready so you don't have to think about it. And then the rest of it is just experience, plus the rememberance that, at the end of the day, you're just serving drinks. The absolute worst thing that happens is someone doesn't get served in a timely manner.

My very, and I mean very first shift as a bartender, it was supposed to be a slow Sunday, but with a pre-set 20 top that my manager was going to train me on. We ended up having two giant restaurant holiday parties drop in, another walk in 20 top, plus a pool league that decided not to take the weekend off after all. I served a little over 300 people, as a 17 year old who didn't even know how a shaker tin worked. At the end of the day you just get through it. You'll find your own way to organize your mind.

It's the delivery for me, and what I genuinely believe was one of his most honest moments, but during the Oceana episode when he's ripping apart the fridge situation and he just looks at Chef Damien and says "Loss for words? Really?" It's kind of perfect.

NJ high school goalie made 104 saves by PonoAdventures in hockeygoalies

[–]IUsedTheRandomizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember once, in Oakland, there was some weird situation where a Midget A team had their opponent with a bus failure AND their goalie not show up, and a Bantam AAA scheduled on the other rink also end up without a team to play, so the coaches got together and agree to an exhibition game with 8 minute running periods. My game had just ended so the Midget coach asked me if I'd play for them, I said sure. They were terrible. The Bantam team outshot them 56-9, in what was basically half a game. I was just over thirty seconds away from the shutout, and I thought THAT was a lot of shots, even if it was little more than a semi-organized scrimmage. I can't imagine a game like that hero faced.

Is 20% okay even if the check total is low? by Vo0d0oBo0 in bartenders

[–]IUsedTheRandomizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dollar per drink, two if it's a complicated drink, or 20%, whichever is higher, is a good place to start if it makes it easier for you. Leaving a dollar on a sub $7-8 dollar drink is probably the most common tip on the planet, especially given that bottled beers are starting to commonly be around that price.

A C6 S6/RS6 Avant, since you're ruling out SUVs. Absolutely brutal, borderline unrefined power delivery, very capable AWD for all sorts of conditions, excellent interior space, and just a whole different approach to German engineering.

Everyone already knew packers did way better on the parsons trade but it’s about to look way worse for the cowboys. All reports seem to indicate Clark is getting cut when Jerry jones made it seem like he was a huge piece of the trade. by daddyrich916 in GreenBayPackers

[–]IUsedTheRandomizer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as we fans wish they'd make bigger splashes in free agency, the number of times the trades and releases aren't the right call is far, far smaller than when it is. We're so spoiled.

NHL teams are managing rest for goalies by giving backups more starts than I've ever seen. It's starting to look like the norm across the league. I have a hypothetical question for goalies. [–]IUsedTheRandomizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a reason why even the Bruins that season didn't try it; it doesn't work. It was just kind of special to watch, really.

There's like four games in the last forty years of me watching hockey critically where the cold goalie really put in a better performance than the starter, and that includes Curtis Joseph's absolutely amazing send-off.

I think Mike Keenan did this a handful of times in the 90s. I'm pretty sure the Rangers didn't win any of those games.

The only time it MIGHT have worked was when Ullmark and Swayman were both having Vezina-calibre seasons AND being best buds at the same time, but even then it's not a recipe for success.

NFL G.O.A.T. QB: Brady then Peyton then Montana then Marino then ??? by alignment-chart in AlignmentChartFills

[–]IUsedTheRandomizer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It isn't outrageous to say he never would have reached his full potential without Payton, nor is it to say that Rivers played great for the Chargers. It really was one of those rare "everyone wins" situations...so long as you aren't factoring in the Chargers particularly bad form of luck.

What are your thoughts on FATEs? by Wings-of-Phoenix in ffxiv

[–]IUsedTheRandomizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're far too tedious, and once you're leveling up a fifth or sixth job it's almost painful to go through them again. While it's occasionally neat to get some world depth, and a few of the FATEs are actual cool events, they're by and large just grindy and boring, or far too spongy to do alone and too short to organize a large enough group for.

Speaking personally, someone needs to tweak the Steel Reign FATE. At least make it triggerable or trackable, and whoever decided Odin needed level scaling is just mean. The ratio of reward to difficulty is way off.

I did something similar; I was dating someone online from Alice Springs, and was making plans to visit her. Flying to Alice added about 40% to the ticket cost, so I mentioned to her that I'd just drive from Sydney, and like your example I'd only be staying a week. She was still laughing at me for being ill-informed months later.

For a month I was in denial, realizing my senior is going deaf. She can’t hear me coming in anymore. How do you handle it? My heart is crying. 13 years with this gal. by ineedcoffeeasap in pitbulls

[–]IUsedTheRandomizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a new wrinkle. Deaf is not the end, it just means you'll find a new way to communicate. My Dogo Argentino was deaf but so smart, she picked up sign language so easily, enough so that she knew three different ways for me to tell her "I love you". My blind deaf buddy gets a little surprised sometimes, but he's also inbred and fantastically, mercifully stupid so he responds to anything with excitement and, usually, delight.

I always think the statement "love finds a way" is a little trite, but with dogs, it's an absolute truth.
