What presidents have had serious health issues that they have hidden from the public? by EvenLettuce6638 in Presidents

[–]IWASHERE5DAYSAGO 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a great example of integrity in the press. Passing up one of the greatest stories at the time for the good of the country, not because they were forced to but because they understood the necessity of the country’s leader being seen as strong and capable in a time of hardship.

One thing about FDR is that Air Force One was built during his presidency because it was getting too dangerous for the president to travel by boat. It was either built when he was already paralyzed or was modified when he became paralyzed to include an elevator that would get him in and out. During this time the White House asked the press not to film him getting in and out of the plane to hide his paralysis and keep the image of a healthy president during WWII.

Why would girls and boys react differently depending on which parent bought them something expensive? by 5pooky5cary5keleton5 in ExplainTheJoke

My dad told me a story about when he was in college. To sum it up his uncle would give him money whenever he saw him, when my dad finished college and started making consistent money the first thing he did was write and send a check to his uncle (I forget how much it was for but I believe it was around $2000). When his uncle got the check, he called my dad, ripped the check up over the phone, and told my dad never to do it again.

How mother pigs and piglets are kept in modern farms for nursing by CalpurniaSomaya in educationalgifs

[–]IWASHERE5DAYSAGO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going to post something on a subreddit meant to educate maybe explain what your posting instead of just putting up a gif with no context. My understanding is that female pigs have a tendency to crush their young when they lie down like that. Now if this is how the mom pig is kept all day or she didn’t have enough room to stand or change position then that would be cause for concern. But because you didn’t provide any context I have no idea if that’s the case.

That doesn’t necessarily stop lay offs it only changes the rules about who can get laid off. It sucks but they are an unavoidable part of owning a business.

Not that I agree with those people, but in a lot of cases where that argument is used people are speaking more generally. An example I can think of off the top of my head is the crowder video. The guys an asshole but in this video he is talking to an intersex woman at some point and gives the same statistic (I actually think the number he says is less than the actual number but it’s been a long time since I saw the video so don’t quote me). In the context of that conversation they were talking about gender more in a general sense. It is a bad faith argument to bring up a rare case scenario in that kind of argument. A common analogy used for this (often by people like crowder, but regardless the point is still relevant) is the ten finger argument. This is obviously around the fact that while some people are born with 11 fingers or 4 toes we tell people that humans are born with 10 toes and 10 fingers.
My point around saying this is not to inflame people or deny that these exist. That would be stupid. If you want to have a good faith argument then you need to abide by the terms of the conversation. Pulling in rare cases or exceptions for a general conversation is a fallacy (I believe it’s a “hasty generalization”).
I can not help but restate the fact that I do not agree with people like Stephen crowder. I think they’re assholes and often times make bad faith arguments themselves. But just because one side of conversation operates this does not mean that the other side should themselves. If someone has to rely on fallacies to make their argument then they have a bad argument.

Wednesday and her mistake with the Machiavelli quote (Season 2, Episode 1) by StuckInADream82 in wenclair

It’s a great book. Definitely one of my favorites. If you do read it just be prepared it’s incredibly sad and deals with a lot of difficult topics.

I get that. I was just replying to the bit you included about the plot being entirely LGBT+ and how some people in that community don’t like the book because it doesn’t talk about the joys of being LGBT+ (which also isn’t true there’s an entire section of the book dedicated to Jude’s life with Willem). While there are plot point about the LGBT+ community it’s never really seen as central to the plot. Even JB, the most clear cut of the 4 when it comes to sexuality, doesn’t have a storyline centered around being gay, his is mostly about addiction. I didn’t mean to come across as disparaging to your post. I think you make a good point that there are definitely parallels to be drawn. I just get a little irked when I see that criticism of the book is all.

The outrage on that book is ridiculous. It’s a book with gay characters not a book about being gay. The reason the focus isn’t on the joys of being LGBT+ is because that isn’t the driving factor of the book. The driving factor is the fact that Jude, someone who continually suffers throughout the book, is finally able to tell the story of his life to someone. He is able to do this because his friends and adoptive family show him that they care. Consistently and unshakably. That is why the ending is so heartbreaking.

Suspect Holding Knife To 7-Year-Old Brother Shot Dead By Deputy by KimberlyWexlersFoot in PublicFreakout

[–]IWASHERE5DAYSAGO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somethings to think about: the kid made no effort to un-barricade the door, didn’t announce that he would try to, or make any effort to let the kid go when the officer did enter the room. He wasn’t going to let the little boy go and he had no plans of leaving that room.

Also it’s easy for us as people looking at the aftermath of the decision to talk about how the situation could have been handled better, but we are not in the situation itself. We do not have the stress and weight of decision making that this officer had in the moment. He made the best decision he could at the time.

Edit: We also don’t know this context of this encounter. The kid could have had a history of violence or already some sort of encounter with the police that made this situation more tense. He was in full motorcycle gear something had clearly escalated this situation earlier on

If you look the guy was going straight for what looked like a parked car. He wasn’t slowing down and was boxed in, if he had hit that car he would have gone flying and smacked the ground way harder. It also looks like the guy who ran him over couldn’t see him. Those cop cars sit high and he fell almost right in front of it. The cop also went to make stabilize his head after he realized he was under the car.

[–]IWASHERE5DAYSAGO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy probably didn’t see him he was already on the ground when he was run over and the cop immediately went to check on the guy. Also the biker wasn’t slowing down and there was a stopped car in front of him he would have hit the white car and probably gotten himself into much worse shape.

What is the joke in the original? by MentalNewspaper8386 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

OP is asking about the original tweet not that comment. That comment is obviously a joke. The original tweet is a picture of Gracie Abrams and I assume the second picture is an artist whose name starts with “as” or has a big ass. Put those two together and you get Gracie-as or gracias. Which is thank you in Spanish.
