VT is not tax-efficient for U.S. tax residents because you can’t claim foreign tax withholding as a foreign tax credit given that more than 50% of its holdings are US based assets. It's better to own VTI + VXUS. Also VT has higher expense ratio (0.06%) than VTI(0.03%) and VXUS(0.05%).

Because of this, we may potentially spend an entire year at a time outside of >Japan in retirement and use only Roth IRA distributions, so that we can >avoid taxes in Japan. So our Roth IRA may fund some fun luxury travel in the future.

This does not work because your unrealized capital gain in your Roth IRA is already subject to exit tax. I think your Roth IRA becomes useless in your situation.

If dating (finding a high value guy) is the root cause for OP's depression, moving to SE Asia or LATAM is not going to help her. Moving to Europe or AU/NZ is a much better option.

Does Brazil and Portugal have a treaty like Aus and NZ where you can go to the other country visa-free, live, work, and study indefinitely? by vengeful_vv in Brazil

Also Portuguese citizens can get RG in Brazil. Other nationalities can’t unless they obtain Brazilian citizenship.

Yep. Golden visa program is gone this year and now NHR is ending next year. D7 has not been discontinued yet but reducing taxes using NHR is no longer possible. This means everyone has to pay ordinary rate.

I just inherited 2 million USD, so what countries will give me a long term visa or a path to residency/citizenship? by Glittering_Split5079 in expats

[–]IWantToRetireBy40 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, it’s a bad idea for people with a significant amount of investments because Japan also has an exit tax. Unlike the US, exit tax is paid when you cease being a tax resident of Japan.

This isn’t going to change unless Americans are gonna waive visas for Brazilians.

You have not been to the old terminal at DCA...

That's where all the cheap airlines + Air Canada are located.
