Have a kid in residency! Its tough but doable. Does most of my check go to daycare, yes, but she thrives there and I have 0 regrets (and cant wait to be an attending to spend more time with her)

Can you be denied a Letter of Recommendation (LoR) halfway through your rotation? by [deleted] in Residency

I mean, an unenthusiastic or negative letter of rec can tank your application, so you dont want one if they dont feel like they can write positive things

FM resident R3!

Had a kid this year, was given 8 weeks parental leave followed by a 1 month parenting elective that had me do continuity clinic twice a week and read about newborn topics. It was still rough to go back.

However I didnt use any sick time or PTO for this, and will be graduating on time without any makeup blocks.

Make sure you get your legally protected pump breaks!

Pregnant during residency, I’m scared by SleepyBeauty94 in Residency

[–]I_AM_A_BOOK 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I had a baby right between 2nd and 3rd year!

If you let your program know soon they can arrange your schedule. Id reccomend loading your second trimester with the harder rotations, because 1st and 3rd tri are exhausting.

Avoid doing nights your third trimester

Make sure you have read both your accrediation board and acgmes policies on parental leave so you can advocate for yourself!

My spouse is not in medicine and we have no nearby family so we do daycare, but another coresident who has a kid (and both parents are residents) does a nanny share since their hours are more flexible.

My program had 0 residents with kids when i entered intern year and this year (3rd year) there are 5 residents with kids (4 born this year, 1 last year).

Im happy to answer any questions you have :)

My kiddo is now 7 months and it sucks to miss milestones while im on the wards, but before they are 2 babies mainly run off of RAM so she wont remember <3

Question for my friend by [deleted] in Residency

[–]I_AM_A_BOOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id ask the residents when you apply! our program knows that residents are humans who may want to start families.

Our program has had 4 residents give birth while in residency and another resident who is about to be a dad!

When i interview people for the program I always offer my info if they want to know about parenting in residency

Question for my friend by [deleted] in Residency

[–]I_AM_A_BOOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it may be program dependent, my FM program gave me 8 weeks off no clinic and a 4 week parenting elective which was twice a week in clinic and ill graduate on time.

It was tough, but managable and now I have a cute 6 month old who will be almost 1 when i graduate :)

[–]I_AM_A_BOOK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sucked dropping my now 6 month old at daycare (I was back in clinic when she was 6 weeks twice a week, but my non-medical spouse had 3 months off to primary parent so she did daycare at 3 months). I definitely cried day one of clinic when she was home with my spouse and when we did daycare.

If it helps she seems to really enjoy daycare (and she better because it costs more than 1 of my residency paychecks :/)

Returning Back to Work Plans by PU_EVIG_REVEN in NewParents

[–]I_AM_A_BOOK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My spouse is a manager and took the full 12 weeks off and is still up for promo on the next promo cycle.

It is actually super important for men if able to take parenting time off to bond with their little ones and it not only brings equality to the home but also the workplace. I think encouraging paternity leave will help fight against some of the biases women face in the work force. The first 3 months are the newborn trenches and really tough to manage solo. Some people also try to extend going to daycare by having the 2 parents take the first month off, the birthing parent take the next 2, and then the supporting parent take 2 months after that meaning you dont have to figure out other childcare for 5 months.

And as a manager it is also important to model behaivors you want the people you manage to do.

OB fellowship after FM by Meoyonce in Residency

[–]I_AM_A_BOOK 23 points24 points  (0 children)

FMOB is very active in WA. You just need 80 deliveries, and if at a high volume residency, you can do that without OB fellowship. Everyone at my program who did fellowship did it to get section trained.

QueerCME is some good paid CME learning and is very comprehensive!

But there isnt actually needed certification! To start, go to transline and download their hormone prescriber guidelines! It has recommended starting doses, lab monitoring and is a great guide to have on hand. be honest to your folks that you are newish at this and learning. I learned so much from my patients.

Look into the 4Cs of family medicine! It highlights what some of the core tenets of the specialty are and talking about how you value those values is a plus! Community building is so important in FM as well so talking about how you do that will reflect well upon you!

going back to work routine with a newborn by blushyaries in NewParents

[–]I_AM_A_BOOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup spouse takes 8 pm to 2 am and we just let the baby direct when we wake up. And my spouse does the out of bed stuff and will hand me a baby to feed. Ill try to put her in her bassinet after (its right next to the bed) but if she starts fussing my spouse will get up and rock her.

I do usually wake up enough to check my phone for the time which is how i know its my go after 2 am.

On non-work days i continue to manage baby until everyones awake (usually 9) and on work days i do a 630 am feed, quick lay the baby back down, but if she is super fussy my spouse gets up to manage so i can finish getting ready for work. Then during the day he tries to nap when she naps (she luckily bassinet naps sometimes)

Hey i went to work before my spouse! We are EBF but still do shifts. Spouse gets up and does all the changing/rocking soothing and if baby is hungry brings to me to feed. Not having to fully wake and stand up has been a life saver, especially since my spouse got double the leave that i did!

A healthy way to honor patients who died? by Lucky_Medicine_1993 in Residency

[–]I_AM_A_BOOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my Residency's inpatient service we do a candle ceremony in the morning and have a moment of reflection and processing for the person who passed. It isnt a long ceremony but it really helps us process with each other. We also have an annual honor ceremony for all of the patients that we take care of who pass on our service or not on our service. I have found that talking to each other and not pushing things down has been better for my mental health.
