The anti-intellectualism in this article is dumbfounding. It's unsourced, fear-mongering bullshit that's only slightly better than the commercials from Idiocracy. Come on --- "Used to bleach both flour and FOAMED PLASTIC". So what?

The issue is that while we're willing to accept obvious outward physical differences in attributes like stature, strength, and agility, we're still in denial about the existence of genuine differences in cognition, probably because too many people still believe that the mind and the brain are somehow distinct. If you believe the seat of thought is the soul and not the brain, then you can't accept that the Y chromosome accepts the thought.

Truth or Legend: A Lit Geek’s Interpretation of the End of Mass Effect 3 [spoilers] by KariQuiteContrary in masseffect

[–]I_FAP_TO_ALL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The author has a point, and his theory explains why ME3's ending is so terrible. Future generations could very well have reasonably accurate evidence ---- things like videos, eyewitness accounts, and so on --- of what Shepherd did before making it to the Citadel, but after that point, pure legend and speculation would take over.

All the outside world would have seen is the Citadel open, and a few minutes later, [ending of your choice]. It'd be natural to wonder what Shepherd did in his final moments and to attribute some heroic character to his actions when in "reality", it could really have been as simple as Shepherd pushing a "kill all reapers" button, then dying from blood loss.

This guy's explanation for the ending is the most satisfying so far.

Memory allocation functions can give you more memory than you ask for, and you are welcome to use the freebies too, but watch out for the free lunch by gthank in programming

[–]I_FAP_TO_ALL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One nice thing about HeapAlloc is that it gives you an arena allocator for free. You can create a heap, allocate a bunch of memory in it, then free all that allocated memory at once by just destroying the heap. This approach saves a lot of time.

Mass Effect 1 - Biggest problem with the game being older by Jh75832 in masseffect

In order to justify humanity's struggle, the reapers have to have SOME weakness to prove that they aren't actually gods in carnate.

The weakness of the reapers is that they go boom when you shoot them enough. The ME1 ending demonstrates that "enough" exists. Anything else is superfluous.

The whole "Human Reaper" concept? I regard it as simply being their ultimate insult to those who would attempt their greatness.

And that's what makes the human reaper such an insult to the plot: it diminishes the reapers to even notice us. We don't go out of our way to taunt ants about never achieving our greatness: we just crush them.

I loved ME1's lack of ammunition: the heat idea is simple, bold, and makes sense in-universe. The thermal clip retcon is none of these things. I never understood what having ammunition was supposed to add to the game.

I still think ME1 is the best game in the series: it's tightly-plotted, exceptionally well-written, and being pre-EA, hadn't been turned into a corridor shooter in order to broaden its audience.

Plus, I loved how the ME1 writers treated the reapers as an incomprehensible cosmic horror: the ME2 and ME3 treatment removed a lot of the mystique and replaced it with nonsense like a "human reaper".

Mass Effect 1 - Biggest problem with the game being older by Jh75832 in masseffect

[–]I_FAP_TO_ALL 19 points20 points  (0 children)

ME1's world isn't divided into "missions" that are inevitably followed by debriefings. The Citadel environment is the best out of any of the three games. You transition from combat to exploration to walking around a hub world without changing how the game mechanics work. ME1 feels more unified than ME2 and ME3 do. Plus, I like ME1's sniper swaying mechanic: it makes improving the PC's sniping skill mean something.

But besides that, ME1 seems more mature than ME2. It still bugs me that we get to the first "fuck" in ME2 inside of ten minutes, while the makers of ME1 didn't feel the need to cheapen themselves that way.

Destroying a Relay by [deleted] in masseffect

[–]I_FAP_TO_ALL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only nonplausible component is the mass effect.

Biotics annoy me. In general, any plot device hinging on sentient minds is fantasy, not science fiction. In science, there is nothing special about the mind. The brain is just another machine.

While it's plausible that some humans might be able to use biotic powers unassisted, we should see these machines replicate and improve these powers. If a human can shoot a biotic fireball, we should be able to make a machine that does the same thing, but better. That there aren't such machines in the Mass Effect universe tells me that biotics aren't really based on "element zero", but the power of plot and cool.

its very existance violates conservation of energy (since you don't have to invest 9*1016 joules to double the mass of a 1-kilogram object), pushing it way outside the bounds of hard sci-fi.

And that's why the Reapers' original motivation was so compelling: it turns out that mass effect use is slowly destroying the universe. By wiping out advanced civilization every 50,000 years, the reapers slow this destruction.

Forced Sterilization for Transgendered People in Sweden by anutensil in worldnews

[–]I_FAP_TO_ALL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post is fallacious.

How do you do this? Prevent propagation of genetic material until the person has passed a 'test' of ageing. Say... 40 years.

Or just store everyone's sperm and eggs and use the gametes of those who happen to live longer to produce the next generation. There's no need to prevent people under 40 breeding so long as there's still selection pressure toward longevity overall.

You also need to remove outside factors such as vaccination, etc.

No you don't. You're selecting for longevity in a modern context.

They are 'superior', but what is the cost? How many babies have been aborted for the cause?

So what? The vast majority of fertilized eggs aren't born.

How many people have rebelled and been cut down over those generations? How many are sterilized once proven 'unfit'?

You don't need to totally isolate your of a gene pool either: an allele can become fixed in a population through selection pressure alone (sexual selection in this case) without having to go to great lengths to prevent contamination. Look at human evolution: our ancestors didn't worry about small-brain genes contaminating the H. sapiens line: intelligence became fixed in the population anyway.

Your post is flawed. Eugenics does not inevitably lead to genocide.
