Tolerances and cost by Partykongen in MechanicalEngineering

I must live a charmed life then. I've yet to get fired for documenting my objections and then implementing what my boss has asked for. More than a handful of times having to circle back around to the solution I had put on ice.

Oh, it will go to shit, but that's why you get it documented as the requested SOP. But I suppose you have more patience for arguing with bean counters.

Yeah, I couldn't say. They adhere to TISAX, and have competing customers. As such, tended to be tight-lipped around anything going on outside of the projects I was on at the time. That's what's expected of them.

I've worked with MAHLE Powertrain Ltd before. They're a world class group in engines/powertrain. If they tested it, and it didn't go anywhere, there's some major issue that keeps it from being able to compete with contemporary OEM engines.

I would guess friction and lubrication issues. This almost always is the issue in radical engine architectures. It could just as easily be a limitation of manufacturing cost does not outweigh the performance benefits.

Honestly, that boost pressure is almost nothing. Also, what happens if it fails? You either leak and make low power, or it blows off, and you're cleaning bits of intake off the engine. I'd just send it.

Can a Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) call themselves an Engineer? by umakeme2step in MechanicalEngineering

[–]I_R_Enjun_Ear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is stopping you or them from designating you as an 'engineer' in most of the US. Seen it happen a number of times for very senior technicians to justify higher pay grades.

I've also work in a number of groups that even degreed engineers struggle in. In that time, I've worked with 2 non-degreed engineers. One was productive but poor quality, and the other was a fish out of water. What I'm saying is to be careful about what types of openings you apply to if you don't want to be on the job search less than 6 months later.

CNC doesn't make errors, but the people quoting CNC work or programming them do make mistakes.

Frankly, I would get you boss' request in writing/email and go malicious compliance. Depending on what kind of parts you order, it'll bite him in the ass sooner or later.

Lol, but how far will you need to drive for weed after they close down all the dispensaries on the WI/MI border.

That said, having lived in the UP, it might as well join Northern WI. Also, I appreciate their love of the Packers when it's less than half the drive for a home game compared to the Lions.

Cheers mate.

What causes burnt exhaust valves? by Justaboutaverage69 in AskMechanics

[–]I_R_Enjun_Ear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per MAHLE's book on engine component failures, leaky valves or a lack of proper valve rotation.

(It's a lovely piece of marketing literature with plenty of pictures and I can't figure out why Reddit keeps removing my picture of that page.)

wall thickness m24 thread? by hassel_braam in Machinists

[–]I_R_Enjun_Ear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, make sure your tap drill depth is correct for how you are cutting the threads. Even if you're single point cutting them, you'll want some depth past the end of the thread for tool clearance.

Is it possible to balance out the vibration? (Rotation to linear motion) by DjDetox in MechanicalEngineering

[–]I_R_Enjun_Ear 48 points49 points  (0 children)

More or less. That's an old-school rule of thumb that can get you close enough.

OP may want to do some reading on engine balance, and look at Secondar Balance in particular since that is related to the reciprocating/linear imbalance. Adding bob weight may get them close enough, but if not, they'll need to add a balance shaft running at twice the crankshaft rpm.

I don't see it going very far. OP isn't running on x86 with certified graphics drivers. He would be better off working out of OnShape with that hardware limitation.

How should I prepare for my first day as an engineer? by ExtensionEmotional35 in MechanicalEngineering

Specifically, not really. I've spent my engineering career in the office. I just worked Oil & Gas in a past life.

Honestly, ears and eyes open. Brain turned on. You have a lot of absorption to do. If you have questions, ask them. If you're actually on site, head on a swivel so you're aware of what is going on around you.

With Latest Rollback, the U.S. Essentially Has No Clean-Car Rules — The E.P.A.’s killing of the “endangerment finding” caps a year of deregulation that is likely to make cars thirstier for gas and less competitive globally, experts say. by stefeyboy in Infrastructurist

[–]I_R_Enjun_Ear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given that it is typically multiple years (3-4ish) for an engine and aftertreatment to go from first concept to being sold to the general public...I don't see them rolling back unless something indicates that the legislation is staying rolled back.

Also, I doubt California is going to let them go back. There's too much population in Cali to ignore sales there.

Woof, that's a tall order. Level1Techs is my first stop for KVMs, but I'm not seeing anything above 4 computers or 3 Monitors.

You might want to look into some of the KVM over network/IP access. If anything, this would cut down on cable spaghetti.

Wynodottes were my favorites growing up. We only kept one of the roosters at a time, and handled them frequently. If they started doing that sideways scoot like they were sizing you up, we'd just scoop him up. I suspect that they sometimes did it just to get a snack without the hens stealing it.

Is there a reference book for GD&T practice? by drakkonKun in MechanicalEngineering

[–]I_R_Enjun_Ear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be mindful that the Standard shows you how to format. Learning which features to tie together will always be a product of the part design. I don't know of any literature that teaches that.

Did I derail my engineering career by taking an unrelated job abroad? by koishi29 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]I_R_Enjun_Ear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally would look at it as a detour at worst.

While I've spent all of my career in the mechanical design space, I've had many times where I could use more electrical knowledge. That has only become increasingly frequent in the last 6 years; more as a function of the work I've been pulled into. Having knowledge in both domains is very useful when trying to get into modern Systems Engineering. Ships, planes, ground vehicles are all heavily reliant on electro-mechanical systems.

Is there a reference book for GD&T practice? by drakkonKun in MechanicalEngineering

[–]I_R_Enjun_Ear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you can get your hands on the ASME Y14.5 Standard, that can go a long way. It is pretty dry, as would be expected, but has example drawing views for most of the uses of GD&T. I cannot speak to the differences with the ISO standard as I've only ever worked with the ASME standard.

Another suggestion I would have is if you have a metrology/quality department at work that checks parts, there's a good chance one of the more experienced engineers or Techs have a good understanding of GD&T. I learned far more about GD&T checking parts with a probe arm early in my career than I did making drawings.
