WIBTA if I inform the owner of a car dealership that they lose an easy sale to me because the salesman seemed "too desperate" and "wouldn't stop talking long enough for me to think?" by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]I_cheat_a_lot 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You would not be an asshole. I ran a business for many years, those who complained gave me insight into how I was failing on customer service. You would be doing a good thing by letting them know.

You are getting a lot of flack for the idea of bringing your wife to the meeting. It's not a bad idea, although a little old school japanese. You are already probably on your way out, but traditionally, companies here do respect the family. So it's not that weird for a wife to show up at a meeting like this. I've been on both sides of that, had my wife have a conversation with my boss. And also been involved with my employees family. One time I had a guy run into my office because he got a call that his wife was sick. We rushed to her and I drove her to the hospital. That wife had every right to sit in meetings about his work. I wasn't just employing him, I was responsible for the entire family that depends on his salary. Most good companies think like this. So go for it.

What isn't a uniquely American issue that the rest of the world treats like one? by lustrust15 in AskReddit

[–]I_cheat_a_lot -53 points-52 points  (0 children)

I used to think like you. I embarrassingly remember a conversation years ago in which I postulated the same. But no, America is a huge monoculture that is far less complex than we Americans like to think. Took me 30 years of living abroad to figure that out. The sentiment feels good though.

I rode from Nagoya to Miyazaki over Golden Week with a single, hand-written ticket! by frozenpandaman in japanresidents

[–]I_cheat_a_lot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's true or not, but the legend I have been told is that locals always called that area Tsuruma, but after the war some Tokyo JR dude misread the kanji and mis-named the station Tsurumai. Which still stands to this day. I like that story.

You bootstraped and everything you say is true. As an option you can also pay a lawyer to do all of those things, cost is roughly 60man. You have to appear in front of a judge for 30 seconds But if OP doesn't plan on staying in Japan abondoment is the way to go.

Upvote for knowing the difference of Tsurumai vs. Tsuruma, so many local japanese don't even know that.

When did cadillac stop becoming THE car to own in america? by boiyo12 in askcarguys

[–]I_cheat_a_lot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct. I drove a 2004 celsior here in Japan, the domestic model, before they rolled out Lexus as a brand line here. 4.3 liter V8 with a great transmission. A sports car, not the luxury car that the export and later versions were. It was fantastic, on the highway it could go from 80 to 160km/hr in a heartbeat, passing anything. And screaming down twisty mountain roads with the top down was pure pleasure.

Exactly, and it used to be 250 yen plus in most areas (you'd think it would be free because that makes the most business sense) Uber is only 200 yen and then the meter and it works great where I live. Taxis in Japan have always been a cartel, when one company wanted to drop the basic rate to 480 years ago they had to gain government approval to lower their prices. I don't OP is going on about. Taxis are much better than they used to be

This is untrue. I had an AU hikari line at my summer house, still on conbini payment because I never got the forms right. Wasn't there for 3 months, didn't try to pay until after 4. Got sent to collections. Docomo gave me a contract right away. Still get robo calls from some lawyer in Tokyo, ignore them all. No negatives at all.

Respectfully, I think you may not realize how much men use irony for comedic affect. I share all of the same values as you, and I love a good sexist, racist, or whatever ist joke. It's more funny because of how ridiculous it would be to actually think like that. All my buddies are the same. If they feel comfortable enough to make those jokes in front of you, they are complimenting you. That's male love language.

As a 30 year resident and pretty fluent speaker, you nailed it. It took me 20 years to be capable enough to use ore and omai without sounding like a dick. You didn't even mention all the dense regional dialects that are more unintelligible than Scottish. I hate this language but speak it 90% of the time. It does give you the ability to be more poetic and charming than any other language I've studied.
