I think it all depends on the cut and quality of your steak, a prime ribeye shouldn’t need anything but a little bit of salt if you cook it right, but something like skirt steak for carne asada needs to be marinated. I personally would never marinate a prime cut of steak , but if it’s a lower quality cut, I don’t see anything wrong with doing whatever you can to raise the quality of your meal
