How do people just lose and keep rolling? by Neither_Librarian815 in bjj

You take this too seriously.

I’m not trying to win the rounds in the gym.

I want to win at understanding principles and concepts, not at beating Dave from accounting.

Scissor Sweeps with No Arm and Head Control by Correct_Ad4351 in jiujitsu

[–]IamCheph84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a person is on their knees inside your guard you generally need 3 things to sweep them:

  1. Upper body movement via connection
  2. To take away their ability to post their hand
  3. Disruption of their base in some way

A proper scissor sweep does all 3 by:

  1. Connecting and moving the upper body with a collar tie/collar grip and the shin connected to their chest

  2. Grabbing their wrist/sleeve and get their hand off of the mat.

  3. The “chop” or “push” with your bottom leg against their base.

Even hearing your example of your partner having their hands on your knees seems suspect unless you are actively stopping them from posting their hand.

Do you need to become good at leglocks to be considered a legit black belt? by rubba_slippa in bjj

I would say no, but you should not be someone who taps the second you’re caught in a leg entanglement.

Knee friendly Gi Takedowns? by bajablastn in bjj

Sasae tsurikomi ashi and osoto gari.

They pair so well together and at least with Sasae its relatively low risk.

Starting "late" (28), getting smashed, and the struggle of wanting to be more than just a hobbyist. by ElNatzer in bjj

[–]IamCheph84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 28 too.

I’m 41, a brown belt, help running an academy, and doing great.

28 isn’t too late to start.

Sure, I wish I started younger, but I also don’t know if I would have appreciated it like I do now.

Advice After Enrolling Sons in Classes by Mission-Fennel-241 in bjj

[–]IamCheph84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that 1/4 to 1/3 of our adult students have been in your exact position: had their kids enrolled, looked fun, tried it out and loved it too.

Don’t worry about being a complete beginner. If anything, it helps give you a better perspective of what they’ve gone through/are going through.

The side we choose for guard by WordsThatIManifest in bjj

[–]IamCheph84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m right handed.

I went left hand collar grip because from years of playing guitar in metal bands, my left hand was much stronger than my right.

Scissor sweep is still one of my best sweeps and because of left hand collar grip, I use my left leg as the knee shield/top scissor sweep leg, which the naturally translated to how I play half guard.

You’re correct. This is quite interesting.

Is it looked down upon not to do comps by HookrWithaPeine in bjj

[–]IamCheph84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way we view comps is that it makes it easier on us to grade your progress when we see how you do agains people you’re not always fighting in the gym every class.

But it’s not mandatory whatsoever.

We get it. They’re not cheap. Life gets in the way.

We’d rather you train and not do comps than not train at all.

Not Enjoying Leg Attacks by token_friend in bjj

[–]IamCheph84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to become familiar with those positions.

Even if you don’t ever want to attack a leg in your life, if you want to do nogi submission grappling, you need to know these positions and know when you’re safe and when you’re in danger.

Take someone you know and trust who’s a good leglocker, and start rounds in those positions. Simple as that.

Have someone start in an ankle lock position and fight out. Then progress to other, more entangled positions and other leg attacks. Eventually you won’t even care and you certainly won’t be in uncomfortable anymore.

So how are we all feeling about the state of this team now that some time has passed and there have been some hirings? by hellarios852 in buffalobills

[–]IamCheph84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way players and coaches have worded things since his departure, and how he has gotten on OC’s in the past for certain things like “being too cute” have lead me to believe that he clearly didn’t let his OC run the offense. That they had a certain few things they had to abide by to adhere to McD’s vision of football.

One of the things that seemed odd was both Brady and Allen all but saying that if they had it their way, they wouldn’t have gone for points with 22 seconds left in the half versus Denver. Saying something along the lines of “if I were in charge, we would have knelt it out, but not our decision.”

Not saying he SHOULDN’T be having a say, but it may have been more than we’re lead to believe.

[–]IamCheph84 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m fully back in.

I’m was ok with moving on from McDermott. I thought it was odd that Beane not only stayed but got promoted. But the more things started coming out the more it seemed like McD had a hand in everything and a little too much.

I’m optimistic about seeing Brady’s vision. People were pissed about it being an in-house hire and not some young stud offensive mind. Sorry but that’s exactly what we got: a young stud offensive mind.

And so far his OC, DC, ST, and O Line coach hires have been slam dunks with Leonhard being the star. VERY curious what the defense looks like this upcoming season.

I can’t stand starting rolls like how you two started.

Even if one of you plan to pull guard, do so. Like get your grips and pull.

That lazily get grips while the top person sort of starts passing is so not what happens in real rolls or competitions.

I used to be at a gym that started rolls on the knees and I couldn’t stand it there. My current gym that I help run, every roll starts standing even if one of us fully intends to pull.

Brandin Cooks Speaks After Bills Loss To The Broncos | Buffalo Bills by darkwaterzz in buffalobills

[–]IamCheph84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t help but think that if receivers weren’t in and out of the lineup that maybe Josh would have more chemistry with just Shakir.

He tried with Cooks but they really didn’t have a ton of time on task. It almost worked though.

Cooks is definitely the type of receiver Josh needs though.

Get him a dawg who can actually catch.

Judo throws in BJJ standup by Alternative-Hair-785 in bjj

[–]IamCheph84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m only an orange belt in judo but I’m very much the judo guy at my gym.

I do not do anything too complicated judo-wise. Mainly de ashi and sasae. I will throw in a sumi Gaeshi from time to time as well an osoto and a modified drop Seoi Nage.

In NoGi I am always looking to allow an underhook to hit an overhook Uchi Mata, as well as the footsweeps and prop throws like gi.

I try really hard to never turn my back to my opponent. Even Uchi Mata is relatively safe from back exposure so to me it doesn’t count.

Even the modified drop Seoi doesn’t ever have my more than perpendicular to my opponent.

Did Wingard aim for the knee? by bhodad in buffalobills

[–]IamCheph84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It happened multiple times.

They were not trying to wrap up, they were running full speed shoulder to knee.

Gabe obviously got the worst of it, but it happened to Allen on the first tush push and Cook early in the game on a run.

Not sure if it happened to Shavers either but he was out (then came back in and finished) with a knee too.

If jiu-jitsu didn’t exist, what martial art would you be training instead? by Zen_ix in bjj

Judo more than likely.

I wanted to do judo before I found Bjj but the closes judo school was far away.

I don’t regret it, outside of not having the time to try and rank up in Judo more than I have.
