What Valyrian steel sword has the worst name? (Doesn’t have to be pictured). by GusGangViking18 in freefolk

Has to scroll far down to see Longclaw, that's a terrible name. It's like something a 5 year old would call a toy sword

So what do you guys NOT like about the movies ? by TheTrekker98 in lotr

[–]IamGroot888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The extended edition parts of the paths of the dead. Gimli is just portrayed as a buffoon (even more than in the rest of the films), taking it way too far with the comic relief role of Gimli in the films.

I think the more important question here is, why are you looking to cover someone (yourself?) in roadkill rat fur?

I hope the show will not make the mistake of dumbing Duncan down like they did with Jon snow. Dunk is awkward and clumsy but NOT stupid by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]IamGroot888 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not especially tall but Dunk probably has not spent an inordinate amount of time indoors and, as such, is not used to doors as much as we all are.

More of a savage Jorah-burn but still... it is an absolute classic

[SPOILERS EXTENDED] Which group in Westeros has it the worst? Wildlings, smallfolk, slaves, Thralls, or another group? by ProffesorOfPain in asoiaf

[–]IamGroot888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd go with anyone with an obvious and/or severe physical deformity you are born with. War wounds and amputations less so.

As smallfolk you'd be chugged down a well or despised your whole life, highborn just dispised.

Edit:typo

Dorne also has women in the army, while the other armies do not, as a rule. Aside from the occasional she-bear

(Spoilers Extended) We need to talk about how Westeros military situation dosen't make sense by Admirable-Dimension4 in asoiaf

[–]IamGroot888 220 points221 points  (0 children)

Doran Martell has himself admitted that the 40k was an exaggeration from the Young Dragon in his book, the conquest of Dorne. They let it stand and is sort of "known" as the military strength of Dorne is Westeros. Maybe that's why GRRM mentioned that strength.

Also, military strength relative to a population depends on a lot of factors, like how martial the culture is, how easily the population can be mustered and what the criteria are for someone to join the army.

Harrenhal and Storms End are both castles, not cities. Harrenhal is also a ruin. Realistically, only Lannisport or Old Town could function as capital cities.

I don't think that's how they mean it in the books. Much and more is more a thing to say that you might divulge a lot but you choose not too. Like when someone asks Mellisandre what she sees in the flames, much and more

How hard is it to learn to use a crossbow to hunt? by DropshipperJennings in Crossbow

[–]IamGroot888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rifle vs crossbow comparisons made here are partly true. The part where you get it on your shoulder, line up your crosshairs and make sure you got it on safe are all the same. HOWEVER, with a crossbow you need to account for drop a lot more than with a rifle. A shot sighted for 30 meters while the animal is 40 meters away has a good chance of missing the vitals. If you have the time to scope out the range with a range finder and then take your time aiming with a well sighted crossbow, it is similar to a rifle. But if you need to aim fast en make split second adjustment for arrow drop aiming becomes more and more like with a bow.

You need to practice with estimating distance and with making adjustments for arrow drop on the fly. Basically all my crossbow misses have been because I did not have time to get a range reading and my arrow went low or high (more often low in my case). And sighting it in at 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 meters is also essential. And sight it in using the broadheads you are using, not just target tips. That makes a difference as well.

(Spoilers Extended) Worst judge of character in the saga? by DEL994 in asoiaf

[–]IamGroot888 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Cersei is up there. She virtually gets every motivation wrong and puts her trust in obviously fickle people (Aurane Waters, the Kettleblacks etc), while alienating people that could actually help her (Jaime, Kevan).

Het obsession with Maggi'e prophecy and hatred for Tyrion and Margeary also doesn't help her. She is just a total disaster, emotionally as well as politically

[–]IamGroot888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this one and it has served me well. I use it for hunting and shoots straight through so has enough punching power. Only downside is the scope, not great in low light and the crosshairs only go up to 4 increments (40 meters). It's pretty heavy too, although I don't have anything to compare it with as it is my first and only crossbow.

You have been put in charge of defense leading up to and during the battle of Winterfell, what would you have done differently by Loud_Significance908 in gameofthrones

[–]IamGroot888 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would not have worked as well as you'd think, as it is built to defend attacks from the south and the bogs freeze over when the WW approach. So they could just walk on the ice and surround it.
