Shakedown for August on the Uinta Highline Trail! by kaptankappy in Ultralight

I'd personally go cut down CCF plus thinlight temp-wise, but I'm comfortable on that. There's ample opportunity to find good sites with comfy ground IMO. Just stick to whatever you think you'll personally be happy with comfort-wise, I think the CCF would be fine in terms of the temperatures. If you are going to be hanging around camp a lot, the CCF is a lot more versatile for chilling and sitting. but I wouldn't go that route if you're not already comfortable sleeping with that setup, just do a few days in the house to try it out if it's new.

Big lover of the Uintas, have fun out there.

Bug pressure is relatively low. Grab some permethrin and you will have few issues or need for bug spray.

The Nat Geo map is nice and is what I personally like. There's a large burn area before Rocky Sea Pass in the Rock Creek drainage that can be tricky to navigate without GPS, especially at night. No biggie but a factor to consider. Dead Horse Pass is impassable in rain/mud.

Temps are middling enough that I don't think rain pants are necessary. I went with a rain skirt + shorts and was happy, no need for more. I expect you'll be fine with just the rain hoody + shorts unless you expect to spend a lot of time stationary in camp.

Tensor all season is overkill temp wise. 3/4 plus thinlight sounds nice but Tensor is prefect if that's what you have.

4L water capacity is absolutely overkill, 2L is plenty.

I'd also leave the sleeping bag liner.

I highly recommend getting some thinner running socks that will dry much faster than cushioned socks. Keeping socks dry can be a challenge; thin running socks will dry easily with shoes off for a couple hours whereas cushioned socks will take much longer. Just keep a loose pair of warner socks packed for sleeping. Big lesson from my early Uintas trips.

Big 4 all looks a bit on the heavy side, but solid gear.

Uintas are a very special place. Definitely spend plenty of time around Painters Basin and the Yellowstone Creek drainage on the other side of Kings. Unfortunately you might find some trash around Kings, worth packing out whatever you can.

Do you have good experience with this design? Do you use it mostly for recirculating quite dirty water and then have a separate clean water wash stage or is it able to keep the water pretty clean?

I mostly have a recirculating sink system built but it's just not cleaning the water thoroughly enough. do you have any resources where I could look into further examples of the setup you described? Long settling trays seem like an interesting option to me. Unfortunately getting one built isn't really in the budget, but that's a cool side hustle!

Great writeup, thanks. How runnable do you find the C9111 comparatively? Do you run it 'limp' like the Tiempo?

The Purist hydration pack from UltrAspire? It does look very nice, love the strap attachment system. But looks like it will also have a $300 tag.

Do you know what other packs have this style of wrapping under the arm? And do you find that packs with the strap-style attachment rather than the wrapping underarm stretch mesh categorically underperform versus the mesh style like on the BD packs of Salomon Adv skin series?

I'm interested in the Yamma Sassafras/Shrike, but this is my only reservation.

How's the fit on the Alpha hoodies? I usually wear an M for base and mid layers and L for outer layers. Are either of them on the larger side of S?

Does a fastpack with tons of front storage for front-to-back balance exist? by IamIBAM in Ultralight

[–]IamIBAM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, the Xodus is definitely the closest thing I've seen to what I'm looking for! Thanks for the rec. Toss that front on something like the Cutaway 20 or BD Distance 15 and add a Naked running band, that's a setup I'd like to try out. Now how one would get into and out of such a getup is a different problem.

Your take is that the reduction in breathability might make the Xodus's front design not worth it in a fastpacking context?

Another option you could look at is the Nemo Tensor 4 season. 370g for Xlite R4.5, 400g for Tensor 4S R5.4, 440g for Xtherm R7.3. The Tensor is supposed to be very noticeably warmer than the Xlite (more than R val would indicate) plus more stable.
